Columbus made the existence of the Americas *widely known to the old world.* He is not the FIRST to have discovered there existed land between Europe and Asia across the ocean, nor the first European; *Erik the Red* made it as far as Greenland; and Pacific Islanders have managed to sail across the south pacific as far as the Galapagos Islands, off the coast of South America. Finally, If you think Chris Columbus was bad, you should research another European Explorer and conquistador; *Hernan Cortes.* For any crimes Columbus committed, Hernan's were 10x worse.

The Spanish flag shown in the minute 2:38 did not exist until the arrival of the Bourbon monarchy at the end of the war of succession. "Spain" at that time was formed by the kingdom of Aragon (Prince Fernando) and Castille (Queen Isabel) The territory that was part of "Spain" in America (known as Hispanic America countries) was part of Castilla, with his own flag.

1:03 No, what was underestimated was the size of the ocean. They believed Asia was a much larger landmass than it actually was. 1:11 You mean Toscanelli's math. Because Toscanelli actually told Columbus that the trip was perfectly possible. Which is kind of funny, considering that little jab you have in the background. 1:17 He never said it was pear shaped. He said it was shaped like a ball, as your own source says as much. Was this a mistake on your end or were you intentionally trying to make him sound more stupid? The nipple bit is kind of true though? Not sure what else he really means by a "breast-like protuberance." 2:22 Are you suggesting that Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic aren't in North America, or even South America? American refers to more than the US you know. 2:45 Would just like to point out that he thought he had made it to what would be known today as Japan. 3:08 Pretty sure I don't need to say it, but it didn't go down that way. He was obviously quite at ease with the inhabitants, as he talks about how just 50 men could hold an entire island, and how they had no iron weapons. He also describes their physical attributes in fairly positive ways, using terms like "beautiful" even. 3:15 He actually wanted to attempt converting them to Christianity, and while he does say they'd make fine servants (in one of the translations), considering the context of the passage he could simply be saying they'd make good servants of God. We don't really know. He did definitely want to try converting them though. 3:48 There's a lot to unpack here. First, a massive part of the native population were wiped out from disease alone. Like, 80-90% kind of big. This was kind of inevitable, as due to how little was known about diseases at the time, these diseases could've been delivered by pretty much anybody from Eurasia. Large amounts of death via disease kind of just happened, like with the Black Plague. They also weren't left with only 200 inhabitants, it was around 5,000 if I remember right. 3:44 1542 Was more than 30 years after Colombus's death. He died in 1506. While terrible things were done during this period to reduce the population so much (though don't forget that most succumbed to disease), you can't really say Colombus is directly responsible for these things when someone else is running the show at this point. 4:04 He did pretty much discover America in that he made it become known to European society. People lived there, Vikings went there too (for a short time, but then they kind of just left and forgot about it), but because of him interaction was able to begin between the Eurasian continent and the Americas, for better or worse. 4:05 He never claimed he discovered the world was round. That idea was presumably cooked up by a couple of idiots who thought they knew history. 4:11 As I said before, he didn't really have any reason to believe otherwise. He knew that the lands were new, but he assumed they belonged to an island chain below what was then called India, but now called Japan. And according to old world maps he would've been right. 4:23 Yes, and that's why multiple cities (including state capitals), a territory, and even an entire country in South America were named after him (or at least the female version of his name) before that date. Pure coincidence. Really disappointed by this video. Colombus wasn't any great hero or anything, but he wasn't the villain so many people are trying to make him out to be today. I guess on this day Adam felt like ruining his reputation, along with Colombus.

Christopher Columbus was actually named Christopher Columbo. This is important because he could not speak English, his journals were written in Italian, translated to Spanish, by Spanish priests, and then the English nobility translated them to English but they did this 200 years after Columbus wrote his journals and they had a rivalry with Spain over colonization for the New World So the English translated the journals with the worst possible translation they could come up with to make the Spanish look bad and Jin up anti-Spanish feelings among their people for war. For example, at one point in his journals Columbus wrote that he believed the local population would make great servants of God or you can translate it as slaves of God. As in he believed he could convert the Natives. The English translated it as "The Natives will make great slaves." I'm sure you can imagine the other falsehoods that come from his English translated journals

Okay, so the funny thing is that it wasn't until the 1950s the "America" started referring specifically to the United States, before then just the continents or North and South America. So I understand Adam's mistake in assuming that when old sources say Columbus discovered America they meant Columbus landed in territory that would eventually become the US. But at the same time there are pop cultural things that will make the same mistake, so I believe he was just addressing a common misconception. They could have done a better job of explaining that.

Doesn't matter if he forgot to take into account the different measuring system, the fact he forgot that and then believed everyone else before him eye idiots rather than taking a step back to think - why are they saying this is incorrect. Have I read this wrong? Nope he ignored everyone else's advice. But the main point is: we paint this heroic pictures of people in history rather than portraying it as truthful as possible. When we find pieces that tell us a different story to the ones spread everywhere, we doubt it and push it aside rather than embracing that these people were not perfect or the heroes we paint them to be.

Look, maybe? But, for better or for worse, many people around the world use “America” colloquially to refer to the United States. Unless “north” or “south” is used in conjunction with “america”, many people the world over (including other places in North and South America) in various language specifically mean the US when they say “America”. Right or wrong, that’s how it currently stands. While, if we were to ever change that, that change would have to start somewhere and perhaps Adam could have been more specific...in the US when the people who want to celebrate Columbus say he “discovered America”, they are pretty universally referring to the US, so Adam is just using the wording that the people he is trying to reach would understand.

It was Columbus’s voyages to the CARIBBEAN that inspired the ENGLISH to sail to the New World where THEY first discovered America and established Jamestown in the name of King James. Columbus died in 1504. Jamestown wasn’t established till 1607. So how could a man who died 100 years before the establishment of the first American colony have ANYTHING to do with American history???

I knew most of this already (they teach it in HIGH school); but Adam missed a few things I'd like to add: -Columbus was not as bad at math as the video claimed. The dispute came from Metric vs. Imperial units (the more things change, right?). Columbus used Roman units, Isabella used the predecessor to the Metric system. So Columbus believed the trip was shorter than Isabella. -Adam didn't mention the people Irving's biography screwed over. Italians could just as easily have been influenced by Amerigo Vespucci, who--you know--is the namesake of the country! Plus Ponce de Leon actually set foot on the continent, in Florida no less. -He didn't mention the struggle of the Finnish and Swedish Americans who campaigned for Leif Erickson Day instead. Leif Erickson, i.e. NOT a brutal genocider, was said to have found the American continent centuries earlier. But the Italians won that battle because of government sympathies or something.

They left it out because it wasn't a big deal. The natives came to him first warning about the OTHER tribes that were commuting genocide (people erroneously think all native americans are the same). The spanish through Columbus offered them refuge and defenses in turn for offering loyalty to Spain. Those who later defected after the agreement were killed by Columbus. When Columbus later lost his governorship it wasn't because he was brutal, but because he was a commoner not a noble and many in the political elites of Spain resented that he had governorship despite not having noble blood.

Johnny, it wasn't socially acceptable for someone of noble blood to hold governorship of Spanish territory, and it was the Fifteenth century, not the 1500's (which would be the 16th century). Back then a commoner holding a position of political power was unheard of. This is why the nobles stole Columbus's power by making up lies in court. King Ferdinand luckily saw through the ruse and acquitted Columbus and his brothers, but even the King did not have the political influence to defend a non-noble having governing powers, and the Queen was unfortunately deceased to defend her decision of granting Columbus' original voyage.
