As a person who lives in a country that practices return free filing, here’s how easy doing taxes *can* be: I receive a “bill” listing all of my recorded incomes, deductibles, what’s my tax rates and how much in total do I have to pay. I sign it, choose a preferred way of payment and I send it back. Done. Update: because of the pandemic this year we don’t even have to send the “bill” back. I scan the QR code on the bill, it takes me to a website, I enter the serial number on my bill to the website and boom! Tax filed.

As an American taxpayer, I actually pay my taxes for the first time this year and it was on a website that the IRS marketed and you can do your taxes for free but I still have to count. Hopefully we can have return free filing but I don't have any confidence in our government given the circumstances of lobbying, political corruption and polarization, wasting money on bailing out banks and going to wars, and the use of filibuster involved in our government. However, tax preparation companies, like TurboTax, is being investigated by the FTC due to what this video stated.

It's actually perfectly legal. According to some research, it's been around since the U.S. was first founded. Also, if you were to ask your congressman to vote or push any bill (for anything), your technically lobbying. What's illegal is if you tried giving him/her money to push a bill or vote against one. But greedy corporations get away with it by calling them gifts and giving it to the retired congressman who are owed favors by their predecessors (the people in office after them). The retired guys cash in those favors and do whatever it takes to have their predecessors do the dirty work for them. I agree that it's a messed up and broken system, but it's perfectly legal. One way around this is to make it it illegal to be owed favors, but then how would you enforce this?

Disco Puppy. However the UK is often chided as the environmental dirty man of Western Europe, backward and stubborn on progress (Brussels POV), odd on taxation (again Brussels/Paris), selfish, bullying, etc... . I guess it is perspective. I'm glad you are proud of your nation. I think many of those EU biases are unfounded. You have a great nation. You might consider similarly for your POV of the US. Since you don't pay taxes yet, ?? are not old enough??, it is unlikely you really know enough to judge. If you are getting info from web and TV comics, then you are getting a strange fictional view, often written by people that will later exhibit mental health concerns, and know little themselves. So consider the source. The US worker has income and social security taxes withheld as they go from each paycheck. At the end an annual review reconciles any estimate errors. Non weekly workers like the self employed businessman or investor, pays his estimates quarterly and reconciles once a year. This is not unlike the UK for adults. After a certain age American workers become pensioners (to use your term) we simply say retired. Widows and orphans become pensioners. Pensioners have a government health insurance (Medicare). The poor without substantial assets have Medicaid free of charge. So we do have national health for the squeezed and aged. Our elected government; Each state has its elected assembly and governor. No other state messes in that affair or jurisdiction Those state governments are responsible for 75% of a person's experience with government, education and law enforcement. As the US is a federation of states, the states elect a central government with limited powers. We have a President that is elected separately from Congress by a specific method. We have a Congress because our founders specifically DID NOT want a Parliament because they saw the British parliament (Tory party specifically) as the cause of the Revolution. We ended up making peace with the Whigs, due to the Tories mismanaging the Revolution and losing the US. Our Congress was designed to allow members to still function as lawmakers, even if they were in a minority party. The President can be elected even though the other party has a majority in the Congress. Finally the judicial is appointed by the executive with review and approval of the legislative. That must sound quite familiar. So the US had a similar governmental structure to the UK, but with specifically designed differences (Federalism) . Both nations are about the same age. Grand Union coming 300 years ago and ours about 244 years ago. We do not need your help, nor your council. We know what we're doing as you know what you're doing. Like sausage, the making of liberty is sometimes messy for each of us, but the result is eventually pleasant.

I'm a tax preparer in a working-class neighborhood (I also live in basically the same part of town). This is completely true (if i never have to do another "i could do this in my sleep" return that doesn't require any real significant TAX KNOWLEDGE I'd be happier. Most of my at least partially self-employed clients and some of the ones who don't really have any ONE form that's tricky but DO have a lot of forms to deal with probably should be checking just to make sure that nothing gets missed, but that is not the majority of what I do). Also, I can tell you from experience that just because a preparer is working for any given company does NOT necessarily mean they're actually competent, and the current due diligence requirements for Earned Income Tax Credit are a combination of a cash grab attempt by H & R Block since they got to literally help rewrite the tax code and "Congress hates single moms". I do get some single dads filing as Head of Household, but the vast majority of people using that filing status (which is a perfectly legit one BUT it's also one that I have to ask some really nosy questions about their family situation) are single moms. Even if you weren't already "Team Babymama", my job will probably make you be. I hear a lot of "I don't know where the biological father is/didn't live with us/didn't give us money or other support", and although some of them may be shading things a bit a) I am required to get plausible and consistent answers that do not contradict anything I have seen or heard during the filing process and I don't know for sure are false because personal knowledge of some sort NOT be a PI and b) even if your ex regardless of gender/lack thereof has the kid or kids five months out of the year and pays a reasonable amount of child support, as long as my taxpayer had the kid(s) six months and one day and provided more than half the household support they are still legally okay filing as Head of Household. And no, it ALSO doesn't matter if you're still legally married to your ex, as long as they moved out before the beginning of tax year June, you kept the kid(s), and you provided over half the household support for you and your dependents THAT'S legit too.

A living floored flat tax would also simplify taxes dramatically. And according to many economists it would actually generate much more revenue for the government than the current tax system. Our current tax system isn’t meant to maximize revenue to the government, or be easy. It’s meant to manipulate the actions of consumers and businesses.
@xeneomorph2 ай бұрын
Eeh, no big problem with this one, poor people exist and they struggle to afford stuff a flat tax would not benefit them at all, the rich will since they can lose a percentage. The tax should be rated on income, the richer you are the more taxed you are. The poor can hopefully go to middle class and be able to afford stuff and the rich with all the money can be taxed and also a no loophole solution.

For most of us, the tax filing is actually pretty easy, 1) list income (probably only two or three simple sources) 2). Figure standard deductions ( a number of people X a $ amount) 3). Subtract and Find the tax on the difference 4). Find any tax credits you qualify for 5). Subtract and that is what you owe. 6) compare that to what your employer already gave the IRS and you get the refund or extra to pay. It could be done on a postcard sized form, but the 1040ez style form is not applicable to most filers except single earners (usually kids). It should be. The steps above are all 90% of us do on the 1040 form. Most of the firm remains blank. It is however intimidating and the instruction language is convoluted, especially for the reasons shown in this video. Almost like Gandalf casting a spell. The IRS is not as efficient and well programmed as you may think. Often they need four to six months to change audit programming based on new law that often gets passed on Dec 20 or so at the last minute. Also many people (but not most) don't earn money the way an office or factory worker does. Self employed peoples have to figure business cost and pay both halves of social security. Farmers and Railroad workers have special complications. Wealthy or severely I'll people will likely itemize deductions. Some people live in one state and work in another, or moved mid year. Then, of course, most have to do state tax forms too. Those people are best served by a paid preparer. However 90% could get return free filing as shown and just appeal anything the IRS messed up or didn't know about.

People in other countries: Guy:"You know that's the best part about taxes? They do all the math for you. They send you a bill, tells you how much you owe and then you pay it. That simple." Friend:"Well of course why wouldn't it be?"
@annekekramer38352 жыл бұрын
No, ever better: they send you a letter telling you how much you get back! From our income, we pay taxes as if we don't have deductibles. So when you do have some that the government missed (like charity) you get money back.

Not sure about US, but in my country, if you are a contractor or something like that, then you have to first inform the respective bureau, then each year you have to fill at least six pages long form (if you live simply and don't do complex business stuff, then it's quite easy). This form then has to go to our version of IRS, but this is not over yet. You have to fill two other forms and send those to social insurance company (burn them) and health insurance company (burn them more), respectively. Those have around three pages total. During year, you keep paying those insurances, after a year, both companies send you how much you paid them, then you have to write that sum into the form and send it to them. Lovely, isn't it ? Also, the social insurance company has one dirty trick - in the sum, they don't count with the last (December) payment, so they inform you you have to pay for the last month (even if you already paid for the last month).

Part of the reason we have to file our own taxes is because you can earn tax deductions for various things which the IRS may not be aware of. Legislators like to pass new deductions for their constituents so the tax laws keep changing.

Yeah, in the UK, us payroll workers send a copy of people's gross and net pay every month to the HMRC (the UK's IRS). The only issue is when more people are using hand-to-hand money transactions which may usually be unclaimed by many self employed people who should know better.

Just remember this would really only apply to people doing the basic state and w2. Obviously for business owners and independent contractors, the IRS doesn't know how much I spent on tools and everything else to do my job. That can be a whole bunch of stuff that won't be done in 5 minutes. This is something not mentioned in the video.
@Tletna6 жыл бұрын
You make a very valid point. Although, I would ask, why should we get deductions for job-related tasks? Or for being married, having kids or owning homes? It makes zero sense. I think the government both charges too much in taxes and gives too many tax breaks. Why can't we just create a simple taxation scheme, one for business, one for private individuals? I don't get why the IRS wants it so complicated and I don't believe it is solely due to lobbying from big businesses. I think by leaving it complex, the government gets away with overcharging citizens every year probably to the tune of millions or billions, and at the same time many don't file taxes properly and are either losing out, or not paying their fair share. Either way it is a shame. Most taxes should be considered illegal anyway since they violate most principles the US were founded on, but if we had a simpler system for doing taxes and didn't have so many things taxes or deducted from taxes, we could actually see what taxes we're paying for what and how much and then vote on it or elect those that will represent us properly.. right now, it is a huge confusing sea and people who want to itemize everything just to save a buck are making the problem worse, not better.
@MeepChangeling6 жыл бұрын
The IRS dosn't get to make the tax code, they only collect the money and process accounts. If you want to know why those things get you deductions, ask congress. The IRS are just fall guys for their incompetence.

Mexico has a Free Filing System and have had it for at least 10 years, it takes you between 5 to 10 minutes to do your Taxes. It only gets kind of complicated when you have to add things that didn't get on time on the system and you have to do it manually but once everything is in the system, it's just one click and you're done. Everything taxable in Mexico is electronic now and you get your copy of the invoice in your email.

I have never understood why the IRS has not gone to a Flat Tax without allowing any loopholes at all.
@klonoa75607 жыл бұрын
The IRS does not make tax code. That falls on the congress to do. Further, while I am for eliminating loopholes, a flat tax without brackets would result in one of two outcomes: 1. Massive shortfall in revenue due to not enough taxes coming in from the wealthy 2. Everyone else ends up on the streets due to a tax rate too high for the lower and middle class

Return-free filing would be nice, but everyone would see their taxes go up. The IRS gets your income information from your employer, sure. And they *might* know about your marital status and dependents. But they won't know necessarily know about your student loan payments, mortgage, medical payments, electric car credits, and all those other fun things people use to deduct taxes. Return-free would save you, at most, 2 hours of math homework a year - but cost you a few hundred dollars in exchange.
@Tletna6 жыл бұрын
What utter nonsense. Maybe in our corrupt system it would cost hundreds more, but in reality the actual time-cost would be little to none and it shouldn't cost us hundreds more. In fact, it would be more efficient to either have the government do it, or better yet, have the government contract with one of these greedy tax-service companies. The US government for example is a behemoth that could easily negotiate affordable rates. So, with proper reform we could afford to have return-free filing.. but yeah, for the time-being, we cannot have it.

There is a reason you have to do your own taxes, and they will already do it for you. Sending in the calculation yourself is creating a contract and confession that your income is taxable when it likely isn't. They'd prefer to get your confession than to calculate it themselves. However, if you signed a w4 or w8, that is also a confession that the income is taxable (but not the final amount) and relies on information supplied by your employer. If you don't file, they WILL file for you, and they usually withhold enough to cover what they believe you owe. Of course, to incentivize you to sign the full confession, they offer you some cashback. Yes, that's how it actually works.
