Of course but ultimately the Alpha is the one who dominates or is recognized as superior or delegated authority of some form by the rest of the group. There is only one captain in a sports team so in among that group there is one Alpha everyone can have Alpha qualities and can end up being the Alpha of a group by default without realizing it. Most mammals have single Alpha. More than one dominant being in a group is possible but it is an anomaly and even in lions were that anomaly is more common eventually those males fight it out and one establishes himself as the most dominant one. Afair the alpha/beta idea was initially created (in 1940s) based on a study of the behaviour of captive wolves. When wolves were kept together with other random wolves they would in fact compete for dominance. As it turned out in the wild wolves do not behave that way. The packs are simply families with 'alphas' being the oldest males/females in the family. When young wolves are ready to breed they find a mate and start their own family/pack. Its only when random wolves were forced to live together that this alpha/beta behaviour would develop. As for humans, there are definitely people who are very dominant - greatly charismatic, intelligent, competent or just aggressive. And there are people on the other end of the spectrum. But I dont think you can just draw a line somewhere and say people on one side are alphas and on the other are betas. Its a scale. Youre only the 'alpha' in the room until a clearly more dominant dude shows up.

On the alpha/beta aspect, should be considered what's the definition of predominant aspect of a person in a society, which could change by the type of society (Money, phisical strongness, capability on "making things" or , as for most of the case in chimpanzee, the capability of being accepted by the famale group, which is more an emotianal dimontration on the group). My personal thought is that is too simplified looking for just one aspect of a gender to consider it an alpha. I hope that someone will reasonably answer this comment
