Adam makes a lightsaber of his own design, machining a beautiful hilt of aluminum to encase around a neopixel-based Pixel Core electronics kit. From the ornate emitter shroud to the painstakingly knurled hand grip, this project is both a labor of love for Star Wars and also a milestone in Adam's machining journey. The finished hilt is magnificent!
Thanks to Saberbay for providing the Pixel Core for this build! Find out more at www.saberbay.com/products/sab...

Mr. Savage I just want to thank you for being an amazing mentor, a friend, an inspiration, and a muse for me and my family over the years. From the first episodes of Mythbusters to your appearances at different cons, it's always evident that there's heart and passion in everything no matter what it is you're doing. Thank you for all of the amazing lessons, memories, and laughter over the years. Live long and prosper sir! From me and my household... we love you.

I love what he is doing and love his focus and drive. Wish he would not cut so fast and let his material heat, swell and distort. Anti-seize on the stainless steel threads will allow easier assembly and disassembly. His drawings were cool concept drawings but hadn't reached the blueprint stage, making errors and misfits more possible. That being said, it is his project, etc., and I'm happy seeing him do as he wishes on his creative works.

Honestly, if he could cut a channel along the length of the inside, he could nest a fibre optic cable (or 4) to the grip channels (maybe near the set screw points where they can get maximum light), down the inside of the handle, to come out and point at the crystal. It wouldn't be super bright, but it would be thin, relatively easy to do, and not require taking anything apart when he disassembles the parts as the fibre optic cable would be static. Plus he wouldn't have to fiddle with power or block his speaker with an assembly.
@orangethesaberguy7638
@orangethesaberguy7638 Жыл бұрын
@@littlekong7685 Yeah the speaker is the main concern, he'd probably have to give up a little audio quality, which is already limited due to the smaller speakers used in 1" chassis) because in order to fit the wires past he'd either need smaller speaker (like a 20mm speaker) and a custom housing, or he'd need to somehow dremel a channel past the speaker to fit them. But if anyone's up to the task, it's Adam.

This design philosophy toward making a lightsaber is interesting to see in action, but I'd also be interested in seeing Adam make another one with a kit-bash/found-obect style. None of the original lightsabers were machined on a lathe like this, they were modified parts cobbled together into something new.
@SilenMonser
@SilenMonser Жыл бұрын
Depends on what you mean by original. In real life where the props team cobbled parts together? Or per Star Wars lore? And if Star Wars lore, after the events of episode 3? Or during the Old Republic timeline? I imagine in Star Wars lore at some point, there were smiths who created parts specifically to build lightsabers. After Episode 3, no one was really around to smith those parts so anyone that wanted to create a lightsaber like Luke had to make do with existing parts available. So you could say that this was one of the original ways of making a lightsaber... from a certain point of view.

@@ViciousTuna2012 well yes, that’s why I mentioned the second sentence as a lead in to the other point of view. Technically, they were also cobbled parts in-lore as well after episode 3 so there’s a duality when OP only mentioned original without clearer context.

To iluminate the blue crystal in the base of the lightsaber, use a length of fibe optic. it shoud take its light from the source at the top down the fiber inside the handle, then to the crystal on the bottom. It may even be an idea to make another crystal but this time colourless, so whatever colour the blade is, the crystal will be too. So if you havent done it already, i thought of this idea to help you. May the force be with you Adam.

As a former gunsmith and home shop lathe jockey, I'd like to suggest a couple things for lathe threading that would improve that crunchy surface finish... First, Don't feed with your cross slide, feed with your compound slide set at 29.5 degrees. Then your cut is only on one side of the thread (yet, producing your 60 degree thread form). Second - use a proper aluminum cutting fluid, not that sulpherized oil I could smell through the screen I've used so much of it. Third - For every cut "x" depth, come back to that same depth, and make at least one "spring" pass once you get close to your final dimension. On your last pass, run 3 spring passes at the same dimension. You'll be surprised how much comes off, and how clean your thread will look! By the way, that's a LOVELY knurl! Threading I can do... Knurling I suck at.

Another thing I noticed was that seemed to be a 55 degree DNMG insert, not a threading insert. Corner radius on that thing looked way too big to be threading with.
