For Adam's second Incognito walk through Comic-Con (which was actually done before the Alien spacesuit), Adam donned his Mercury program spacesuit replica and explored the convention hall. His use of a polarized helmet visor shielded his identity, but fans still managed to pick him out in the cosplay crowd!

I know I'm late to the party on this (and thus probably will never get read by anyone on Tested) but I remember Adam saying that he had hearing aids, bluetooth ones in fact. I wonder how difficult it would be to rig up a binaural microphone setup that tied into them. That would allow Adam to actually hear even when he was in a costume with a really elaborate cooling system. Plus, make it once, refuse it a hundred times.

Two things, First, do Will and Norm follow you around throughout the walk? If so, that seems like a sort of big hint. Second, you should give the person who finds Adam a small like 10 to 15 minute interview with him as a little reward. He can ask questions about the costume, mythbusters, or other things that he might have wanted to know. If he/she is able to pick him out of a crowd like that, they are obviously a fan and I'm sure would really enjoy that. You could even have them come eat with him after the walk in his room or something. I just thought it might be a neat prize for being such an Adam fanatic.

A suggestion for the helmet- Look into a flight helmet liner/skullcap. It'll keep you a bit cooler and keep the inside lining of the helmet from getting funky from sweat/skin oils. Much easier to toss a semi-disposable skullcap in the laundry than cleaning the bonedome liner.

If you have camera crew following you around people are bound to put two and two together and spot you. How about not having any crew around, just station them at far away points and have them zoom in to "follow" Adam instead of actually walking beside/around him.

I think norm films some with his dslr, so its not as obvious.also adam is not the only one with a film crew following him around at comic con. I think the guy early on in the video with the shoulder mounted eng cam was not even part of adams crew

Adam! you could put two mics at the front with the output going to in ear headphones, this would 1)cut out the fan noise and 2) give you stereo hearing of what is happening outside of the helmet(i recommend taking apart a Zoom H1 for the mics ;) ) awesome suit!

You should try to find an old CPAP machine and use the fan from that. It is designed to be quiet. If you can get that to work off a battery you could have air movement and still hear.

It's kinda late, but using ventilation systems like on mascot suits would keep you cooler. Maybe a battery pack belt, hooked to smaller fans around you lower back, ankles and base of the neck. As long as the costume is bigger to allow for it, the fans could be incorporated into the design. Fans on the ankles and back blowing cooler air in, and the one on the base of the neck pulling hot air out. But, again, it would only work with bulkier costumes I would think.

The hearing prolem with the fan reminded me of those 3d stereo haircut mp3s. I don't know if their algorithm is OS, but putting in 2 mics and feeding each to one channel of a pair of heaphones shouldn't yield a terrible result... maybe. And then, how much more work is it really to add a tiny little cam to the front..? :D From there to streaming the real comic-con suit experience would be a small step for Adam... but a great leap of awesome for us, youtube-fed hikikomoris!!

Adam, You might want to try (operable word, "try") to use a newer CPAP machine instead of the fan. If you can make it run off of batteries, some of them actually cools the air as well as circulates the air and they are made to run whisper quiet (so people can sleep). Just a thought. Great costumes BTW! I hope to see you at Dragon*Con someday.

fantastic suit... but i was just wondering... if the air vent is connected thru the neck area, wont it help lessen the noise impact? plus u get air ventilated thru ur head to perhaps upper chest area? wont that be better?

What about swapping the fan for a compressed air system? One of those small carbon fiber tanks used for paintball would probably do the job a lot more quietly.

For cooling the suit it might be interesting to make a small motorised bellows rather than using a fan, that way you could make it silent.

I wonder what results Adam Savage would have if he attempted to make it appear like he was a person pretending to be himself at something like Comic-Con. Possibly use a little make up, maybe change his eye color, and if he really wanted to get elaborate he could attempt to alter the appearance of his faces shape... Those things aside he would have the same hair (maybe different method of care to alter is texture?), same glasses, same outfit, and of course same body build...

There must have been headphones in the helmet you could have hooked up to and external microphone? A cheap little amplified microphone on the outside of the suit hooked into the helmets communication equipment would have made your life so much easier Adam! Think about that next time you have to wear a helmet or mask that makes it difficult for you to hear. Just remember to put a volume limiter on it to cut out any big noises.

He needs to get some bluetooth hearing aids. (I know he has hearing aids already) That way he can have them run through his phone or a bluetooth enabled mic that allows him to hear through the helmet. Maybe even add a little speaker that has voice distortion so that he can talk to people without it obviously being his voice.

It's a shame that Adam cannot have fun at conventions like less well-known people. :-( I've long been a fan of spacesuits myself, and I used to have a replica Star Trek Tholian Web spacesuit built by Andres K. Monsen and Roberta Brubaker. It was great for my posture, as it forced me to stand very upright, but as I got larger, the suit became "the silver sausage" and I stopped wearing it.
