The MacReady hat is a standard campaign hat that would be common in military and law enforcement environments, aka the Smokey bear hat. In MacReady’s case the front and back brim have been creased up over time, which makes sense for the hat of a helicopter pilot, shoving it on and off in a cockpit over time. If you want the real deal, Dave at DbarJ hat company is the guy who made it for the film (as far as I’ve been told) and takes custom hat orders

@3:12 - Steven asks what kind of hat this was originally. To me, it looks a lot like a Boy Scout hat we used to wear way back when, which I believe was called a “Baden Powell” hat. But our brims had to be kept perfectly flat, whereas this one obviously has had the brims turned up. So, I’m not sure what this might have started life as.

Kurt's role as MacReady, the helicopter pilot, with suggested Vietnam War past experience was superbly done. His and doctors excursion to the other camp, Kurt wielded that M-37 Ithaca riotgun, exploring the decimated encampment, like he knew this long gun intimately. The hallmark of a combat veteran.

I got this feeling that guy was getting annoyed at Adam’s over enthusiastic handling of that Tron prop. Near the end when he’s rotating the prop and that thin side detail starts bending, even I was cringing. I’ve said it before, but Adam’s penchant to “hand talk” is going to accidentally damage something.

Having been a hockey player. I had the same helmet they used in Tron. So as a kid it was an early intro to props in movies that were often everyday items that passed simply because the majority of the audience didn’t know what they were. Biggest example being the lightsaber. Which I didn’t know the origin of until way into adulthood. Wish I could think of some of the other obvious ones… pretty sure the X-wing “pilot” gloves are just welding gloves. Also remember an episode of Dr. Who where a glue gun was a laser gun. That one seemed lazy, but those were so cheaply made that it was lead into gold level alchemy.

First thought was it looks like the frontiersman’s hat from Blazing Saddles, but it’s not quite right. Could be an unfinished hat that’s been on the basic mould but not yet had its brim cut and formed, and then been ‘customised’. Or, as someone above mentioned, a Boy Scouts hat that’s been modified.

That helmet from Tron... I saw it and I said to myself that it was the helmet the bad guy had in Tron. But surely that couldn't be it, I had to be wrong. After all it's forty years since I saw that movie once at the cinema. How could I recognize it? And it turned out I was right... I loved that movie back when it was released, but have never seen it since. Strange that it stuck so well in my mind.

I always thought that the hat was entirely practical for an ex-USMC helicopter pilot who needed protection from the sun but also needed to look straight up overhead. And that in itself informs the character.

@@Thomas_Esson That's disappointing to know. I wonder what Adam used to make his? From scratch or what? I guess I could go look it up in the RPF if I cared enough. Things about film props are often funny. Like the Keaton Batman suit - so much money put into those on the cowl and capes and I saw one at a Warner Bros store and the 'boots' where just a upper grieves or whatever you call that shin part over Reebok sneakers painted black - which makes some sense that no one is really looking at Batman's feet and the Reeboks would have been a zillion times more comfy than leather boots. So it was a money-saver too that they didn't have to have custom made boots and the shin upper parts were just made of black vinyl over whatever to look plausibly boot-like. And they had the 'grappling gun' prop too he uses to lift him and Vicky Vale who lies about her weight which was hilarious in the film. It looked FANTASTIC on screen, but in person was clearly kludged together out of random bits of metal junk and looked awful behind glass. But on screen they totally got away with it. The sequence in the film is of his belt I think where he pulls it off, asks Vicky how much she weighs, then a down shot of him firing it into the sky, a closeup of the hook grabbing something and then an actual off-camera winch or maybe a bunch of union guys on ropes pulling them up out of frame and PRESTO - grappling gun illusion! And I feel sure someone has reverse-engineered how to make that non-working prop actually a real reel thing because it's how prop nerds think. All those scifi props make nerd go to Life imitating Art!

@Thomas_EssonАй бұрын
Lots of incredible film artifacts are in museums, in a large part thanks to private collectors. But there aren't enough presently to accept (let alone display) everything, and the market continues to drive new discoveries. If you'd like to see more in museums, your best method of influencing that is to frequently visit current museum collections and encourage others to do so. In my experience over the years, I've found prop and costume exhibits to be rarely swarming with visitors to the same degree as more mainstream fine art.

Concerning MacReady's hat. It could be a widebrim campaign hat like some people have said. The same style of hat you'd see a Park Ranger or a Drill Sergeant wearing for instance. Based on the size of the brim and that grass band though it might be a working felt sombrero, a lot of them have that same distinct pinched 4 corner crown like the campaign hat. I live in South Texas and very occasionally you'll see an older ranchero walking around in a hat very similar to that. That being said I've never seen either of those styles of hats folded like that though. Probably a character thing they did for the movie.
