Spacesuit replica maker Ryan Nagata brings to the cave several of his spacesuits and spacesuit parts he made for the movie First Man! Adam and Ryan talk about his build of the X15 suit seen in the film, the technical accuracy achieved by the costume department, and what he learned from making pieces to be filmed for camera.

The way I see it, Guys like this are in a sense, practical historians. That is to say, they're documenting and preserving history by the act of recreating it.

Totally behind this, Adam should pick up all his years of (drooling) expertise in suit making and get together with a group of talented people like Ryan and make a state of the art space suit ensemble. The whole nine yards, inner, outer, shells, the supporting machines. Would be nice.

I was thinking more like making it as a prop that would be cool but easy to make and open source all the patterns so that indie filmmakers could have that as a resource.

As Adam suggested, always write down the things that you learn. Not only one day you'll quickly need a piece of information that you found buried in some archive or 2h long video, but one day it will be helpful for the next generations to find books or just doc files filled with informations, tips, tricks and so on. I tend to always to so and I find it EXTREMELY useful. And I mean it!

Even better if it's digital. Save it somewhere in the cloud where you can not only search it, but you also get to rest easy knowing that it isn't lost if you're robbed or if your house burns down. Text alone doesn't take up a lot of space, so even simple solutions like Google Drive are pretty good.

I would purchase and probably obsessively read a book by Ryan about minute and nearly forgotten space suit engineering and facts. I am SO happy Ryan got to work on this and his skill REALLY shows in those closeups of his work. In the day and ago of "Good enough, we'll CGI the rest in post." It's nice to see a production reach out to a true craftsman like Ryan Nagata not just for his scholarly knowledge of the subject matter, but for entire pieces and costumes. You've come a long way from just making cool replicas for enthusiasts, collectors, and museums, Ryan. I hope he really does start writing this stuff down & the processes involved, for anyone following in his footsteps and the rest of us artsy types that just need that proper touch of real to refer in our sci-fi works.

Yes! I thought they got everything spot on apart from that. Everyone in clean suits during manufacturer. ..they would tumble the LM to shake out the smallest debris before final assembly. ..then you see all the dials in the command capsule all soiled and messed up( Ok on the return journey things could be more worn but not on the pad). I know the were just trying to show the "rivets and all" 60's era tech....but it was a glaring clunky moment for me in the film. Everything else was incredible!

Good point on writing stuff down. The people who made the stuff made it to work and might not recall the details now. Same for the people who wore them. Just like a war vet won't recall the number of rivets on their pistol belt but the collectors will, guy like Ryan and Adam are the ones who'll know this info when all is said and done.

For quite a long time, Adam was a Seamaster guy, and I've only noticed the Speedy in videos for a month or two. I never could square his love of the space suits with the Seamaster, though I believe he said once that the Seamaster was a gift from his wife. If he's like most of us watch nerds, he makes concious choices daily about which watch to wear and why. I purchased a replica Apollo hook and loop band for for mine, both a short version and a long version. The maker was based out of the UK. The maker did use vintage correct materials and typefaces for the labels. The measurements and construction of the strap were detailed in a NASA document that was used for reference. If you've read this far, you probably already knew most of this, and you're probably a Speedmaster dork like me. So hello, fellow Speedy fans!

I was talking to the man at Orbital Effects and he said that the LM interior that he rented to them came back pretty much, well... altered... in that they added details and removed details of the interior... All this whilst I was standing in the actual article... (I was showing him my Edu*Craft Diversions DSKY replicas) So, as we'd seen in the release film, they really "comic-booked" out a lot of the ancillary aspects... which was a major viewing disappointment... er... for me. You know... the lunar landscape during the landing... which was... hmmm.. laughable... and the overall added grittiness of spacecraft interiors... Hmph...! OH WELL... Hollywood..! Sheesh. 😴 Thanks!
