Adam Savage’s Tested

Күн бұрын

Adam Savage is obsessed with spacesuits, and his latest costume build for this year's Comic-Con incognito walk is a replica of the very first spacesuit made for famed aviator Wiley Post in 1935. Adam's also excited to experiment with Worbla in this build for the helmet, and make heavy use of his sewing machine for this striking suit!

Actually if you watch starting at 1:07:10, there is music being played. The difference is that the music being played is in no way a distraction to the viewer. There may have even been more instances where they played this kind of music but I only listed the last one. This kind of music seems to fit and is more soothing to the ear, and is in no way a distraction to the video, such as in some video's where you hear nothing but a wailing guitar. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the sound of a wailing guitar. In fact, I actually have 7 guitars of my own and love playing them and making them wail. But there is a time and place for everything.

One neat little fact about this helmet is that the window wasn't centered perfectly, since Post only had one eye! He fed compressed oxygen into the helmet right near his face, which would probably freeze your face right off -- except it emptied out onto his eye patch. Such a great tribute to an absolute badass, and such a great build!

You beat me to it. I groaned when I saw him center the port, as I knew it would drive Adam crazy when he found out. Special interest to me on this one. According to family legend, my granddad (who was a pilot in the military) used to hang with Wiley Post (and Will Rogers too) at a nearby airport when he lived near Oklahoma City.

I've always heard that, but all the images look centered so I think it's only barely off (if any at all). i.amz.mshcdn.com/qHBO5ElvjimHDrknf169eaox6KE=/http%3A%2F%2Fa.amz.mshcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2016%2F02%2Fwileypost-11.jpg

J. Steven York I'm pretty sure he's aware, since I learned that fact from a book he recommended in another video :P But Adam's got both eyes (obviously haha) and the off-centering is pretty subtle, so I can't fault him for making it a little more comfortable for him to wear! Edit: Book is called Spacesuit: Fashioning Apollo by Nicholas de Monchaux. It details the design process of the Apollo Spacesuit kind of from an art historical perspective, and is pretty fascinating from start to finish!

There is something about a craftsman working that is just is nice to watch. I know and won't call you a master craftsman. Just because you dabble in so much and so different fields of things, from working with fabrics, wood metal, plastics, paints and everything in between. but for the most part, you have an understanding of what you are doing or how it could be done and some learning along the way that is so accessible to so many people that watch this and think "I could build anything I want now". which I have thought many of times watching endless videos of yours. Also reminds me of when I was little watching my granddad make things out of MDF as he was an amateur woodworker from home with the lathe, table saw, drills and all bits and pieces. Great memories from my childhood. Keep up the awesome work with all builds. Very inspiring.

@samwolfe9403 6 жыл бұрын
Helge Frisenett thats a fair point. But if he used if for making it up, recording measurements and working notes in their needed locations than it would be pretty useful in my opinion. He ended up using a different mannequin part way along anyways. You wouldn't have to assemble the fabric on it or pin stuff to it. It could be useful for patterning and determining how to best lay stuff out.

So cool that you did Wiley Post's pressure suit. The one major thing was Mr Post had one eye so he offsetted the view port so his good eye had a better view. Just a little fact Wiley Post and his good friend Will Rogers were killed when their float plane crashed on takeoff from Point Barrows, Alaska. Two American icons were lost.

Brilliant Adam. I used to work in a design technology department at a London school and know how hard making stuff actually is. @Adam Savage's Tested Dude, I really like those one hour long One Day Build videos because they are so bloody effing Zen. I'm an RN working in A&E and a maker/tinkerer in my free time (whenever I can muster the energy for it, that is), and as you might have guessed already, our current workload is a wee bit elevated because of all those Covid-19 shenanigans going on. Which means those ~hour long videos are not only a great help for me to wind down after e.g. a stressful twelve-hour shift. In fact, after I watch one or two of them, I can sleep like a bairn, which is (among other things) *_way_* more healthy than e.g. draining a bottle of a good wine to be able to get those direly needed Z's. But in addition, those videos of youse are also always chock-full of nifty little tricks which I somehow can always find a use for in my free time whenever I'm enjoying myself by unleashing my inner maker and nerd so that he may be creative and frolic to his heart's content. So dear and beloved half of Ye Unforgettable Mythbusters (yes, I got all the DVDs, yes, I still enjoy watching them, and yes, I desperately hope that Mythbusters Jr. will not only take off, but soar for many seasons to come), please don't ever stop making them. Because beside regularily just enjoying those videos of youse, I _desperately_ need them for: A) keeping my sanity in my line of work in these trying times, and B) coming up with solutions whenever I might get stuck at some project I'm tinkering with. Which means you're doing an outstanding service to the general public, Good Sir (Esq.). And ye shall receive all the praise (and views as well as thumbs-ups) ye duly deserve for doing so!. :-)

Yet another amazing Savage project. The weathering, as always, is nothing short of wizardry. So, Adam - next time you decide to have a casting of yourself made into an Adam-equin, be sure to wear a short-sleeve t-shirt and some bicycle shorts so the resulting statue can be used for molding costumes without worrying about the clothing it's wearing. And after it's done, spray it with dry-erase board pain, so you can mark it over and over and later wipe it clean.

just like sacrificing the neck entry for a zipper. practicality above going authentic. if he went full authentic. he could have made the whole helmet out of metal. he could totally do it. but it would be heavy, and hard to move around with at a convention.
@Agamemnon2
@Agamemnon2 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, I doubt Post's original design was very good for moving around at all, nor was it intended to be. It's not like he expected to go jogging inside his plane. Building a wearable replica is always a tradeoff.
@MichaelBerthelsen
@MichaelBerthelsen 6 жыл бұрын
TheAnimystro He also didn't make it almost impossible to walk in, despite the original design being made for comfortable flying for hours sitting down, so no folds when sitting down. This made it impossible to stand in, and walking had to be done crouched over. But that would suck on the floor of a convention.

You are correct for Wiley's suit, however there were several made for both him and his crew. Those didn't feature the offset viewport, but it was still technically a Wiley Post pressure suit. ;) Then again, if Adam wanted to be accurate, he'd have to get about 6 inches shorter too.
