Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Mandalorian Blaster Paint and Weathering!

Adam often builds props just so he can paint and weather them, so this paint-up of his Mandalorian Amban Phase-Pulse Blaster replica has been a long time coming! With the mechanical construction completed--built from 3D-printed, machined, and hand carved parts--Adam preps and applies paint passes using screenshot and photo reference. It's also a chance to test a new chrome mirror paint that can be quickly brushed on the parts!

I don't understand why he went so heavy with the anodized effects. I feel like it should be just the slightest of hues...

Yeah, the anodizing confused me a bit, too. If you look at most references for the blaster, the anodizing is localized on the inside of fork, where the blast sorta rides the metal, not the entirety of it. It certainly doesn't have that linear, somewhat hard gradient he added. The anodizing starts from the inside of the fork and goes out, it doesn't start at the end of the fork and work its way down. That said, I'm just nitpicking an otherwise amazing build.

On camera it definitely picks it up very bright. Bringing that shine down several densities will help. The problem is that it's likely there are at least a few of the rifles used in the series and reference photos if you look do run a gamut on the tuning fork from a very dark to shiny finish. I'd also weather the stock down, it's too bright and unworn compared to the rest of the rifle and needs to be scuffed and toned. But remember this is simply to do cosplay and not to create a definitive rendition, which is why it's lots of fun to see the various rifles out there. I repaired an old piece of pottery years ago and had to paint match the finish, it took a while to get it blended but all I could do was simulate the original color using 5 colors and layering and spattering paint to blend. With eyesight it was perfect, on camera it was easy to pick up the detail of the paint because cameras have a greater dynamic range than our eyes. So I can see both sides of the issue. Does it need to look exactly like Mando's rifle? No. It simply needs to look enough like it that the average person is going to simply enjoy the overall quality of work that went into replicating the rifle.

Glad I wasn't the only one that was thinking this. I wondered if my TV was making it look much brighter than it actually was. Adam is super talented and I'd never dream of criticising him, because he's much better than I could ever hope to be at making props, but if it was my build I think I'd go much lighter on the anodisation.

Looks like there's a few refs like the Hot Toys amban that have the same pattern. Though if he were going off of screengrabs and actual refs of screen props the pattern would be longitudal with the hotter blue inside the fork and the outer edges a faint yellow.

The forks burn is way to vibrant I'm not a painter or anything but part of me thinks going over it with a super fine grit polish followed by an almost dry rag would probably tone it down assuming the coat is thick enough for that. Otherwise I mean it's just way to bright. The rest is absolutely jaw droppingly amazing! I really hope you can find a way to fix the fork but regardless you are still the master. Simply amazing.

I think it's a leftover from Adam's FX work... you often need to overdo such things behind the scenes so that with stagelighting etc it still is noticeable at all, but when you go for the effect outside of a film it's way harder to get convincing. He should probably even have tried to color the "chrome" paint a tiny bit, that would most likely have been enough for the "heatcolored" effect... not this almost coat of paint look he ended up with. Compare the "close up shots" at the end where it is not nicely lighted out equal from all directions, immediately it looks much more like only discolored where you see highlights... i think that is why he made it the way he did, even though in a showroom it would look slightly wonky...

That 'pop fit' on the scope is very nice. Especially as Mando takes off the scope sometimes to use as a spyglass

@@Eralen00 As the scope has a electronic display, I would imagine it has some advanced auto targeting/focusing function, like a camera, which would calculate a target's distance and its alignment to the gun barrel

When I was younger and still making models with my stepdad, he went crazy with the DIY hacks to do painting. He found a $2 battery-powered pocket lint brush and engineered it into a paint mixer using jumbo paint clips that he bent into different stir sticks. He also made his own paint drying oven using cardboard and tinfoil for the walls, a micro heat lamp and a miniature turntable found at a Goodwill. I still have the majority of his modeling stuff, but haven't been able to use it in years.

I don't know if adam will ever see this but a neat thing about resin printed pieces is when joining resing parts you can add uncured resin between the two pieces and cure it with a UV light. The best part of this is that with sanding the seems are just gone and it essentially wields the parts together.

Yeah, looking at a pic from the show, he got the blue and purple in the wrong places. The blue is supposed to be on the inside of the fork and the purple on the outside. And it's way too vibrant..

I wouldn’t have gone off the show for the metal. I would have referenced regular burnt metal, artist mess up and take liberties all the time. Sure if you want to make it exactly like the show then look at it but it doesn’t look super realistic.

@@Jacksonmontyart Even if you look at it logically he got it wrong. That sort of blueing happens when chrome gets hot. You see the same thing on motorcycle exhausts. The blue color happens where it gets hottest and then fades to purple, then the straw color. If you watch how the rifle works in the show electricity or whatever it is the gun shoots bounces between the two forks. Meaning the part that is going to get the hottest to discolor it blue is along the inside of the fork and radiate out from there. The way Adam has it is the artist getting it wrong as you suggest because he didn't stop to think it through logically or just didn't understand how the effect works. Adam is pretty smart, I'm guessing he was just caught up in the excitement of the build and experimenting with a new technique and paint that he just didn't think it through.

The Stuart Semple paints are awesome, check out the Black 2.0 and Gold as well ! Also, SPRAY BOOTH!! I just have a canvas fold-up one I made, with a few 120mm extractor fans blowing through carbon-filters. removes the overspray completely, and reduces the fumes a lot.

Orbital sanders with hook and loop fixing for the sheets make great paint mixers, just put loop tape on the bottle to hold it on the sander.

For the chrome color gardant. I always use a drop of the base with with color I want. It doesn't always work but when it does it gives it that "inside" the chrome look. You know what I mean?

thats rustoleum clear you use is also my go too now, i find for small or not heavy use wood items i prefer it now to a typical poly even though i have now grown a fondness for wipe on poly. just love the stuff its so quick and easy to work with.

I love how this build turned out, and I think Adam did an incredible job... however, their is one detail that is slightly off that I'm stuck on, namely the paint on the tuning fork. I looked at some screen shots of the blaster from the show, and it isn't actually an even gradient from the tip of the blaster to the back like a motorcycle exhaust pipe would be, but a gradient from the inside space of the fork to the outside. Basically, the metal closest to the inside of the fork is a bright blue, and changes to purple, and straw as you go from the inside out. This makes sense, since the area which would be exposed to the most heat wouldn't be the very tip of the fork, but rather the central channel along the inside of the blaster's fork, with the heat and color radiating from there as a result. This is an extremely nitpicky observation 100% acknowledge, however it immediately caught my eye when he displayed the top as it was finished being finished. Overall though, I am seriously in so love with how this piece turned out and at the mind-blowingly incredible work that he put into it. Seriously, absolutely fantastic!!!

I know this video is old, but I wanted to give a quick tip for future projects! Those heat marks are iridescent in real life, and I've had a lot of success using color shifting airbrush paint to achieve the look. Green Stuff World Color Shift gives amazing results. Last note: less is more. The material should still read as silver, so pull back way sooner than you'd expect and let the heat marks be more subtle. Gives a better final result. Loved the project!!

I built a standing spray booth out of a MAME box plan. The design of some MAME boxes really lends itself to being adapted to a spray booth. In order to have enough depth, I selected a MAME box that has deep sides. I used the keyboard shelf to mount a fan to pull air into the box, then drilled holes on the shelf for the video screen to force the air up. I then created a false back that was two inches thick that ran along the back wall up to the top of the unit. I then cut a hole out of the false back and mounted a filter to it. I then cut out a hole on top of the MAME box and mounted a bathroom exhaust fan that exhausts the air out through a drier vent to the outside. I also mounted a heat light inside the painting surface and wired everything up so that all of the fans and light turn on with a single flip of the switch. I use the lower empty space of the MAME box to mount my air compressor, spray gun, and airbrushes. The only thing I would change, if I built another, would be to use a much larger oven exhaust fan for the top. All in all a really cool solution for a common shop problem.
