My woodshop teacher never bought new sandpaper. Every year used the same tattered, uselessly weathered sandpaper from at least 2 years prior. It was so bad in fact that it would take us at least 2/3rds of our total time working on a given project to sand and finish it. Made me hate working with wood all through high school. The kids in that woodshop class are probably still using the sandpaper I used my freshman year.

+Salvatore Aversa adam is kind of a jack of all traits, master of one (modelmaking). alot of things he does could have been done much better, and sometimes that does show in the end result, i dont mean this in a negative way, im just saying to a professional, many things he does come of kind of... half assed. i still have huge respect and love for his work, hes the reason i abandoned university and became a carpenter, best decision of my life.

+xx1simon1xx He's a perfect example of a "quick worker". He has a very pragmatic approach to most of the things he does and it sometimes results in what you spoke about in your comment. But then again he can punch out a replica like that, which would have taken other people (like me) weeks to complete. It all has its cons and pros.

Watching you work Adam I have to remind myself you are actually a celebrity. You are like the crazy cat next door that has the neighbors worried. Using the jigsaw to cut the center out of the eyelets while holding it in your hand is crazy. I do that same stuff all the time and have cut myself on bandsaws, jigsaws, and even a wood jointer got ahold of a finger. But it's faster to just go for it sometimes. I have watched you over the years in your various endeavors and have developed a lot of respect for your work. It's fast paced mayhem that in the end is freakin amazing. Thanks for sharing!

this is stupid but one of my favorite parts of this video is at the very beginning where Adam was able to accept that he had made a calculation mistake and say "Thank you" to the correction. Seeing how smart each and every person is on this show I am sure that it takes quite the drop in pride to admit that a mistake has been made. But I want you to know that it was observed and appreciated.

I love watching Barbarella a great one off, and I've enjoyed watching this video it is one hell of a build to make that iconic gun, it was a pleasure to see you at work and in your element putting this piece together. Also that you made it up as you worked through, not an easy job and basically winging it. I would love to have an awesome work shop that you have. I myself, love model making even though I've not done a lot, it's a hobby really, though I would love to do as a job instead of stacking shelves at a supermarket. I don't have a lot of money and do everything in my small bedsit in the UK. I challenged myself to build something big. I've collected a lot of materials, mostly cardboard, cardboard inner tubes, and basically a lot of cardboard, and a lot foam core and PVA. I've been building a space-station, mushroom and industrial in appearance, with a large saucer section. It stands about five foot four, almost taller than me. Now I decided to make it even tougher by adding LED lights to bring it to life. These LED's are the battery powered type you get at Christmas and I've lost count how many I've put inside and out. It's also been an enterprising effort to hide the battery packs, some are internal others are external, with removable panels to access the switches. My dad did tell me I could have put them all on one circuit and power them through the mains but my knowledge of electronics is limited and besides it has been a fun brain teaser. The build is getting there, right now I'm adding external features, textures before rendering. It has taken me about 2 years to get to this point. Adam, you are an inspiration, love watching your channel, lots of interesting builds, challenges, show visits and tours behind the scenes of the many movie workshops that span the world. Awesome stuff.

You guys didn't take into account her added height, due to heels, or the perspective of the photo. The gun is in front of her by a few inches and the camera is slightly lower than the tip of the barrel which would make it a tad taller the height of her eyes (plus the heels).

The scale issue is something easy to compensate for. Would have taken about 20 seconds longer to figure out. Still well within the "one day build" criteria.

I'm really loving these One Day Build videos. It's the best part of what I loved about Mythbusters, the construction of the pieces. I don't know if you (or anyone) will read this comment, given that it's on a video so far removed from it's launch date, but if so, might I suggest a flash of a time code in the corner of the video every once in awhile, to give us, the viewer, an estimate of what time you've arrived at. For example, after cutting the wood to get the basic shape of the Barbarella rifle, how long it took you to get to that point. Other than this, there's no complaints. I miss seeing you on Mythbusters, but this is better in some aspects. All the construct and building, with explanations and theories behind the conclusions and (thankfully) nothing getting blown up. Kudos to you all!!

Norm's role is to host, not to participate. He has a similar perspective to the audience, and is there to help bring the audience along with questions, comments. Also Adam is blitzing through this in a day, designing and problem solving on the fly, so Norm is there to fill the air gaps and make sure Adam doesn't go dark for an hour or two just focused in on working.

Just recently got into watching these videos and love watching the amount of work and skill Adam puts into these things. He just seems not into this build as the other ones I've watched. The fact he forgot the trigger just proves the point. In other builds he keeps getting more excited the closer he gets to the end. In this he just seems to want it over with.

Hi Adam, I really admire your work, the confidence you have. built on years of experience is breathtaking!. But, I do worry about your exposure to dust and contaminates. Even though the board you're using doesn't contain formaldehyde, the raw dust can collect in the lungs to form a claggy mucus that can solidify over years and cause breathing problems. I do understand the creative urge and even I get carried away occasionally, only later to realise I haven't used a mask. I'm nagging cos' I care. I'm here from the future (2023) and I am fascinated by the difference in Adam between then and now. With Norm in the cave he is a completely different person - no shouting, no "I LOVE IT" at the top of his voice, no strange accents, no whistling, and no drumming. Noah Christman The 'trigger' on the outside is actually in the picture. So it's not that they put the trigger in the wrong spot it's that they skipped adding the trigger. At 1:06:48 You can see that the piece on the outside should be there. I noticed because I was confused as to what was going on with the trigger until I saw the picture at the end.

You previously mentioned the importance of good lighting. I'd say don't forget the importance of breathable air. A good ventilation over places with dust, smoke and vapor will keep you mind and eyes in good shape. There are overhead types that you can move above your head as you move around the shop.

Nice trick I learned when making my electric guitar. Clamp a cheap plastic bristle dollar store brush to your table (or in a vice). When the pores of your paper get clogged: smack the paper against it in a brushing motion. You get a lot more use out of each page of paper before it's too clogged to be effective. Works best if your using rubber sanding blocks, something about the way the rubber bounces off the plastic brush clear the paper really easily.

Adam's 1-day builds = week of head scratching and procrastination for me.. Mythbusters was an awesome show, but this channel definitely is alot more detailed with the steps needed to build, and having Adam give little pro tips are very helpful..

Really cool build. But I think the paint job could use a bit more work, the brown came out kind of flat and plasticy. It's much darker in the picture. Also didn't you forget the trigger? :P

Da40kOrks Yeah I was thinking that too. Tho he does mention he was not worried about getting it exactly the same, and those heels look to only be an inch or two so would prob not make a big difference.

Jason SealMan ProzacPreacher It's not the wood that's so dangerous, it's the binder and formaldehyde in MDF/LDF that's the real problem, very carcinogenic.

+MrSeagull meh. i work in a woodshop everyday, i usualy dont wear a mask, unless i sand oak or beech (those can cause cancer) everything else just disolves in your lungs and isnt harmfull, you get used to it pretty fast

Somebody mentioned that in the comments before, but also that she has her legs slightly spread in the picture and isn't standing completely straight up, so that would approximately negate the height increase of the heels. I thought that was a sensible idea, don't you?

I'm only 6 minutes in but have to say... you guys should look up Matthias Wandel's "Big Print" program. You could take that image (which I presume you found online) , define the lengthy in the program and it would be able to print it out life size for you. woodgears.ca/bigprint/ Windows only, unfortunately.

Unless you're sanding something toxic or dangerous, a mask would mostly be for comfort. Some will get caught in your snot, but that's what snot is for. If this was a job, he'd probably be required to wear a mask, but it's his shop, his lungs, he can do what he wants.

I'm usually impressed with Adam's creations, but I have to say that this build left me disappointed. I guess I was hoping for a replica rifle nearly indistinguishable from a working gun, but what Adam creates here is IMO just a poor prop gun. By not using real hardwood for the stock & making a 'plastic' barrel end piece & just chroming it had me thinking that Adam just didn't care. He obviously doesn't think this weapon deserves the same level of attention as his beloved Blade Runner pistol or Star Wars blaster. And I understand that to make this in a day you have to cut corners, I get that.(Adam actually says it himself in the video at 1:45, "I don't want to take a lot of time, I want to get this knocked out.") So maybe it was a bad idea to make this a one day build? I dunno, who else agrees? As a cheap prop that you're only gonna see for a second or two then move on it's fine, but if you wanna treasure this item for years you gotta do better than this. Just my opinion. (I did love the part about asking Siri how tall Jane Fonda was, lol)

Do you know how busy Adam must be? Not everything has to be a 100% accurate replica, even less so when he's working on a prop that has only one reference picture. Obviously this doesn't mean as much to him as the Blade Runner pistol, so obviously his not going to be working on it for tens of years. Plus, many of the movie props at that time were made like this, they weren't actual working guns obviously, so why would Adam make it like that? He gave a perfectly good explanation which you even quoted, so I think you should just accept that.

aDotFromTheFuture Yes, obviously I know he's not going to spend the time on this that he devotes to his most coveted items like Blade Runner & Star Wars, which are the most iconic memorabilia so that makes perfect sense, I just wish he'd used better materials than this & it wouldn't have taken him so much more time to do it. What he did create was perfectly ok looking, it just wouldn't hold up under closer scrutiny. You wouldn't examine it and mistake it for a real weapon if you actually handled it. But if he used real hardwood & a real barrel, etc. that would have taken him say twice as long (not 10 years) to make it would have turned out a much better item. And compared to other one day builds it seems he did try harder to make them than this (Blade Runner pistol box, beaver carry box, etc.)

James Shelnutt Twice as long might have been too long. Besides, Adam is a movie prop maker, so he's going to think like one. And like I said, many of the movie props were made like this, using materials that were cheap and fast to work with. I don't know have you ever worked with hard wood, but it really is much, much harder that LDF. So yes, it would have taken a much longer time to work with. The other one day builds were much simpler (or less time consuming), so it may have looked like he tried harder to make them, but really they were just easier to build.

I'm really only disappointed with the wood finish, the barrel flare, and the complete lack of a trigger mechanism. I think right at the end of the video, as they're signing off, he looked at it and realized there was no trigger. This build is overall in line with the others, and I still found it fascinating enough to watch for over an hour, but it was missing the little intricacies that these builds often have.

It's version one, created in a few hours. I beg you to give it a shot. See how your version #1 comes out. Was this perfect? No, but he will step away, reassess and improve on the design until he's more than satisfied. My nit picks were mainly the way the barrel was butted up against the stock. It left a large gap. No doubt Adam saw that too, but he pressed on rather than going back and forth to get the join just right. I think the overall shape needs refinement too. Still it was a smashing first try.
