Adam: a note I've picked up when splicing wires like you're doign with the power supply, I always cut the wires positive and negative staggered, that way when I solder them and heat shrink them the two joints aren't side by side, and makes the overall form more narrow and less likely to bind or rub against one another either, though your loc-line has plenty of room inside of it.

I liked this build well enough to model my own on it. Instead of armature wire, I used a doubled length of 8 gauge copper wire. I left the wire insulating sheath in place. I created a "nut" for the 3/4" NPT plastic fitting from a copper pipe fitting hiding in my plumbing junk drawer and soldered the 8-gauge copper stiffener to the "nut" so that that end was secure. I then drilled an appropriately sized hole in my workbench to secure the lamp. I modified the flange on the lamp end and used the shoe mount to secure the lamp to the arm. This light supplements the fluorescent ring-lamp with magnifier to improve the lighting on the bench. 4600K is the color temperature that matches that of the fluorescent lamp, but a higher temperature that the LED can provide is a good supplement to the LED lamps that I use on the microscope in that area of the bench. So far, I'm quite pleased with this idea.

There's some ring light options that are similar brightness/size that would allow you to "look through" the light-would be handy for extra small things that you'd like even light all the way around an object. With the way this is built (and the beefiness of the power supply used) you could swap out light heads depending on what the project calls for.
@treborrrrr6 жыл бұрын
I started building something like this with a ring light many moons ago for that exact reason. Never finished it though... But testing just holding the ring light in front of something (I used 2-3 concentric ones) showed that it worked very nicely.

Adam, a nice little tip for soldering, grab a cap from an aerosol can and put a couple slits in it. It will hold your wires for you as well as catch any solder that drips so you don't make a mess. That way both hands are free to solder and not fighting the wires or worrying about heating your bench. If you don't have a specialty clamp set holding your stuff for you that is..

you could mount a couple of rails on the ceiling where a long "cart" traveled, and all along the way of the long cart have a couple of rails with a smaller cart (so you can move the contraption on both x-y axies, kinda like a gantry crane, or at least that's what I think it's called) and from that cart have a chain hanging with a counter-weight on the side of the contraption as to have everything hanging from the ceiling and thus not have an arm sticking out of the table but hanging from the ceiling instead, if big enough you could use the same light wherever in the room with no issue I think.

Love your work Adam. Here's a tip for future wire splices: Offset, or stagger, splices this way if you rub through the internal heat shrink due to the wires moving you are less likely to end up with a short. This will also reduce the bulk of that area of the wire allowing it to transition through conduit etc. more easily.
@kyleberger98906 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I am going to use that method for my next wire splice.
@wupme6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that mythical short circuit danger from not staggering them. Which is why almost every company in the world doesn't stagger them. Its not needed, especially not if you apply a second heatshrink around both like adam did.
@Pladouce256 жыл бұрын
Yes it is generally a good idea to stagger/offset the splices, but since it's not shaking or vibrating and doesn't move a lot, i'm 99% sure it won't short in a long time. If it was in a aircraft or even a car, yes sure it's a big nono, but we don't do splice like that either.

What I did for my hobby bench was to begin with a podium mount (for mic/audio gear) screwed down near the edge of my desk with a 12" gooseneck screwed on. At the top of the gooseneck I used a universal mic clip, which holds a small police multi-led flashlight. The light can be pointed anywhere, including upward, from underneath a project such as an RC vehicle. Very handy little hack. Btw, thanks for your years of involvement on Busters - I continue to learn cool tips & tricks just from reruns. Seeing as I use my computer desk as a makeshift workbench and have been thinking of getting into film, obviously this is something I'll be doing, but when you say "C clamp," I think, "Oh, this is definitely going on a bar clamp." Quicker to attach, not much more expensive (plus I've got some spares), and bonus, they tend to have padded ends, so if you're attaching to furniture other than your workbench, you won't mar the surface. Read the power requirements label on the back of the unit. It will tell you which contact is positive and which is negative. It also tells you voltage and current necessary to run it.

I have a dead dental filler heater in my "please fix this dead thing, nobody takes it to fix it" pile, that begs to differ. not everything has polarity on it written and some things just kill the pic microcontroller on it if you connect universal power brick that has switchable polarity, which is of course wrong.

You could also 3D print the delrin piece to be any shape you want if your printer can get the resolution on the threads right, I've had some very good success 3D printing SLA resin fittings. To actually get a good model there's addons like CoolOrange for Autodesk Inventor which model the entire thread for you (keep in mind, SLA fittings don't work well in wet applications as the cured resin becomes soft with prolonged water contact)
@EvanRustMakes6 жыл бұрын
FDM (most home printers) can't make precise threads at all. Just buying a solid block of something and then drilling/tapping the threads will work best.
@Dloweification6 жыл бұрын
I was talking about SLA resin, as mentioned multiple times. But you're right, filament printers wont be able to do it.

I ended up using the top half of the stock mounting joint, and 3d printing an adapter to fit on the arm of an old, decapitated, florescent desk lamp.

To everyone saying it's too expensive you can use an old phone as the light and download a lighting app , Run a USB extension up any repurposed lamp base you make or repurposed and just use a $3 car window suction mount to add the phone. It's the same effect but smaller and ilyou can watch KZbin on it later

This is actually perfect. I've been looking for a light for my desk that's movable and supports itself but haven't found any good options. This would be great for when I'm studying/reading or working on fixing someone's pc.

It's a 15 Watt panel and it uses 12 volts DC in. So it uses 1.25 Amps max, any power supply above that would work.

It looks like the strippers Adam uses here are the Knipex 12 42 195 or something very very similar/possibly a rebrand of the same tool. $90 on Amazon right now. I have the Knipex 12 62 180 and I love them. They're more of a pistol shape, and a bit cheaper. They've been perfect for my needs. Those are $40 on Amazon.

you can make this with pliers and a drill and maybe a hacksaw. no need for soldering if you buy the light with the power supply.

You dont have to solder the wire either, you can just twist the ends together and insulate them with electrical tape
@pr0xZen4 жыл бұрын
@@fakename287 I wouldn't advice this particular bit. With the wire and rod in there, there is bound to be a but of tug on the cable inside from time to time when twisting and bending it. Shouldn't be so much as to tear the cables, but it would probably be enough force to pull the twisted ends apart over time. If you have to do it like this, at the very least cut the two wires an inch or two apart, and heatshrink the joints for extra support. If the twisted joints should come apart, the live ends should stay inside the heatshrink. If all fails and they do not, the exposed metal ends will be an inch or two apart along the length of the cable, so they are unlikely to contact and short eachother out. And, having the joints a bit apart, reduces the overall circumference at the joint, which is always a plus when pulling and housing a wire inside another narrow channel. Especially a flexible one.
