Today's build is the intersection of two of Adam's favorite things: and his collection of new hats, and the movie John Carpenter's The Thing! That's right: Adam is working on a MacReady costume inspired by Kurt Russell's iconic character, and it all begins with making an ultra-accurate replica of his distinct and ridiculous hat!

I did a budget friendly MacReady costume for Halloween a few years back and finding a cheap hat was harder than building the flame thrower.

* fistbmp * I had the same issue xD Functional flame thrower; 40$ and a few scratches & sunburn from crawling around a junkyard to get parts to build it. Cheapest non plastic-p.o.s. hat I could find at the time; 235$ -_- (I will admit that hat was worth the price, but it was still way more than I could budget for)

I'm about 87% sure that the stampede string ties onto the hatband and that's what we see as the weird twist in the band. It lines right up to where the grommet is, and looks to be the same material.

I honestly think the best acting in that movie was done by the dog. it almost seems like it knows it's in a movie , and knows exactly what to do. it's quite impressive

Many many years ago I was at a Halloween party and a group of guys came dressed as Kurt Russell. What made them stand out was they each came as a *different* character from a few of his movies. The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China, Escape From New York, and Captain Ron to be specific.

Out of all of the One Day Builds I have seen this one blew my mind on a single technique. Right here 12:25 Adam gets rid of a couple of pressed in grommets. It's so quick and throwaway. But removing grommet and/or pop rivets is such a pain in the a$$. Using a chamfer bit is a stroke of genius. How did I never think to do that?

My uncle was a stuntman and saw Mcready's hat in person. The lanyard is two pieces not one. The knot you see looping over the hat band is actually the lanyard. There is one on each side that loops over and feeds though the gromets.

Speaking of glue, I could realllllly use a tool tip video about all the different glues that Adam uses. CA, barge, hot glue, spray glue, etc. Knowing exactly the right applications of them all (and preferred brands, if any) would be a big help. I mostly just use CA glue but I feel like there are others I could add to my toolkit.

I watched The Thing when it came out. I was working midnights at a hospital, refilling patient's water pitchers, among other things. Every time I crept into a dark patient room, I was just WAITING for something to jump me. Terrifying! Great job on the costuming, as always, Adam!

This is such a cool build! The first time I saw The Thing was when I was 11, watching CBS on a 13" TV with my best friend at a cottage in the Pocono Mountains. We were alone, none of the other cottages nearby had been opened up yet for the season, and it was completely dark outside: the most perfect isolated setting ever to watch this film. As for kangaroo leather, it really is the best. It's commonly used by pipe organ builders and restorers for pneumatics inside windchests (the pressurized wooden boxes that the pipes sit on) and it lasts far longer than anything else. But it is expensive.

wow, I just did a Macready costume for halloween, and then find this video after the fact! Very good. My Macready hat is a very large cowboy hat I picked up at a consighnment store then reshaped and it's only flaw is that the brim isn't quite big enough, but overall very close. This is a costume I hope to use again, I'll keep refining the details through the years. Thanks Adam!

I've used the same technique for aging but I never really knew about Fuller's earth until recently so what I used to do and still do sometimes is take ash from like a grill after all the coal is burned down and that ash just the kind of white ash that works great for weathering

Agreed. Without Robs work, the special effects would aged poorly. Look at contemporary effects in other movies at the time. RB was a new generation of artist and was way ahead of his colleagues. His old work holds up amazingly well.
