BlobVanDam the magic of editing. this video alone took at least 2 days of building and 2 weeks of waiting on stuff to come in. i assume he uses a typical work week of monday to friday for actual work and tries to have one day a week that he uses for personal. thats what i try to do, and i fit in some extra work where i can.

Um to say this is straining the meaning of "One day Build" (2 guys talking for week beforehand then 3 guys working for 8 hours on one day and then reconvening weeks later....all in order to tweak an already completed project that, itself took more than 11 days) is a galactic understatement. It cannae b' done cap'n!!! And to say "the wiring" is a one day build is like saying the last mile of a marathon is easy. There is no point to wiring up a a chair...WITHOUT THE CHAIR. That said, Adam is outstanding and all is forgiven! Great vid.
@Zeviander8 жыл бұрын
This is the absolute, ultimate, best prop-meets-real-life thing I have ever seen. I am stunned by the sheer awesomeness that is this project. I would love to know just what kind of cost is associated with building something like this, because I would definitely, in some regard, later in life, want to recreate this to some degree. It would be the best nerd-room centerpiece in the history of nerd rooms.
@viktorlofstedt59558 жыл бұрын
Speakers + amp , Powersupplies, Electronics, Wires first speakers plus amp is around few hundred and you can get it cheaper, powersupplies lets have 2x 20 amp 50 $ each, the arduino is dirt cheap say 30 $ to get all the breadboards etc, leds and other electronics around 100 $. this sub totals to 380. now the chair, wood, leather upholstery around few hundred bucks, the custom molds and custom switches some hundreds more. that sub totals to 400. so 380 and 400 makes 780$ before factoring in labor. Which is then the option of finishing the thing or learning every single used technique first. Heavily simplifying material is 1/3 of total costs so that gives us an estimate of 2340$. Adams shop, the cost of an electrical engine and a salary for a shop assistant not included. If i would make this i would set a budget of 3k and order some of the stuff prefab to compensate for the lack of wood shop.

A "one day build" for a crew of three, in a fully equipped special-effects shop, with all parts laying at hand, all plans printed out and studied thoroughly, and the main chassis thereof already completed over an even longer period of time. Any questions as to why that eBay chair was built down to a price rather than up to a specification? It would be interesting to even try to figure out ahead of time, what it would cost to produce an item like this in batch production. I also shudder to think how incredible Adam Savage's work would be, if he were into Classic Racing Motorcycles rather than pop-culture iconography. His attention to detail in photo-analysis and research from original source material AND his fabrication skills, would very likely bring the hobby up to unforeseen standards and return a lot of old racers to us which have only been known to us as a few historical photographs. The bike hobby & surely a lot of the automotive stuff just doesn't work in terms of perfect photo realistic millimeter-for-millimeter replicas unless we're talking about moulds taken from original parts....

You should invite William Shatner to try out your chair and maybe give his oppinion on it =)

I totally love all of Adam's KZbin and Tested content. I only discovered these vids a few years back and was thrilled to find that my self taught maker techniques paralleled his so closely. while I haven't read all the comments I do have a possible explanation for the failed LED issues. Polystyrene, while being an incredibly versatile material and possibly my personal favorite plastic, is an extremely evil conduit for creating ESD (electrostatic discharge). I've had several failures while trying to use this material for reflectors or enclosures on projects that used LED lighting. That's been my experience anyway.

I also like how he's wearing a shirt with Vader on it while working on a StarTrek prop.

When I saw the recreation of the set it hit hit me just how creatively the show had used the resources they had. Great show (both the original series and this), great work on the chair.

I've sat in the original. You're damn close. The biggest thing I noticed when sitting in the original was that the padding was squished soooo flat it was horribly uncomfortable.

Adam. I'm picturing the next Star Trek chair could be the life-support chair where Captain Pike uses blinking lights to communicate. It could move around using a joystick underneath the top. You could simply sit in it stone faced with the burn makeup and mouth open looking like Captain Pike as you putter around Comic Com using the joystick. That would be EPIC on multiple levels. You could make it extra cool by being able to play audio of Captain Pike.

+Alex Ferraro Adam talks a couple times on podcasts about how legit it is to make things in a small apartment. A guy asked a question in a Tested Q&A video about model making in apartments and Adam said something like "don't scorn the small apartment work." So I think he would agree that you shouldn't be discouraged :)

They should make a video about how to set something like that up, like they did with the beginners toolbox. How you can make things in your appartment/parents house/garage with as little space as possible, how to organize that, what basic things you would need etc. I know it sounds pretty straight forward, but seeing how someone else is doing it gives you so many great ideas how to set something up yourself you might never had thought of.
