@mbc-923 жыл бұрын
I know this video is 4 years old now and it's probably not important to Michael anymore but there are a few things about this design that stand out to me as a kendama player. There are some important qualities to a well designed kendama that are missing here. One of the major qualities is what's called Lunar Balance. Lunar is a trick that is performed in "tama grip" (the ball held in hand as opposed to your default "ken grip") where the ken is swung up and landed on either the small or big cup resting balanced on the tama. (imagine it's oriented sort of how a telescope would be pointed towards the sky) It's important that the base of the ken isn't too heavy relative to the weight of the sarado (the component of the kendama which features the big and small cup) so that you can easily achieve a stable balance. Another important quality that was missed here was the bevel on the tama hole - it was omitted by choice - but it really is important as a wider diameter bevel, particularly as wear is presented on the bevel edge, makes Stall tricks much easier. Stall tricks are where the tama is landed on points of the ken and sarado other than the cups or the spike, such as landing the tama on the top rim of the sarado leaned against the spike (a "Bird") or inversely in tama grip where the ken is landed balanced upsidedown resting on the tama hole (a "Stilt").You would also find that other tricks such as "Jumping Stick" would be very difficult to perform without a tama hole bevel. Another aspect of kendama design is weight matching. When performing Juggles or a trick in which the grips are switched mid-trick, it's ideal to have matching weights between the two parts for consistent feel in the hand and muscle memory. I won't even get into tama grippiness but I can assure you that most tricks beyond landing the cups and spike are going to be very difficult if not impossible with a tama as slick as this sanded delrin. As far as string/tama-hole friction goes, it is common now for kendamas to feature a steel mini bearing that rests between the end of the string knot and the tama string hole. It wasn't very common at the time of this video shoot (typically it was a plastic bead bearing) but now the steel mini bearing is typical. I can't imagine this comment would be very useful to Adam or Michael or that this build would ever be revisited but I figured I'd leave this here just in case. It's this kind of nerdy stuff that makes the engineering and designing so fun. Not to mention Kendama is still really cool, I think!
@d4slaimless Жыл бұрын
Well, that's what you get when 2 amateurs are trying to replicate something that is more intricate than they thought. By amateurs I mean of course that they don't know all the details about kendama, for example, as those presented in your comment. Actually could have been a nice revisit to make it with a person who can actually then test it in more subtle ways.

They for sure are knowledgeable and smart, but they aren't geniuses by definition. Being knowledgeable doesn't automatically make you a genius, since you acquired that knowledge through learning and experience. A genius just can do something naturally or is way faster at learning things than others, someone who can do things others haven't even thought were possible. But kids on the internet that don't do anything than watching vids all day for sure think Adam and Michael are geniuses too, yeah. If I watch every single vid from Vsauce and try to memorize everything, does that make me a genius too? I mean I know everything that Micheal knows, so I must be, right?

19:18 you can hear the dimensional fabric of whatever unholy material the blade is made of tearing through the 37th level of hell to cut the plastic efficiently. A side effect of this is some of the damned souls that blade has claimed in another life can be heard screaming, which permanently weakens the centuries of stored power in the blade, until it finds flesh once again. This is proven at 22:29 because the souls don't scream as loudly, indicating less power.

So we have a 1 *inch* high napkin ring that's a *meter* high in diameter and a 1 *inch* high napkin ring that's 10 *cm* in diameter." Oh god this is why we need to use metric
@Heavenclone7 жыл бұрын
and they have the same volume
@kindlin7 жыл бұрын
This has nothing to do with needing to use one or the other. In fact, in your example, it hardly matters. Three units are used: meters, centimeters and inches. You could use all metric units and call the dimensions 1m, 10cm and 30mm and it's still three units, you still need to translate between them. to compare them. I'm all for the metric system, for ease of conversion, but your example was hardly the ultimate reason behind why.
@internetpolice93667 жыл бұрын
kindlin Stop being obtuse, it is clearly simpler to convert from metric units to other metric units than metric units to imperial units. Everyone knows you can convert from different units, there is no example where you can't convert from imperial to metric when you know the measurements.
@kindlin7 жыл бұрын
OK I re-read it, and came to a more satisfying conclusion. The reason why the example is mediocre is because the things being compared are in the same systems. The diameters are both metric (m, cm, easily compared), and both of the heights are, by definition, the same and so easy to compare, they're the same (1 in). Yeah it's weird to use those specific measurements, but makes perfect sense immediately anyways. I never even noticed until I saw the OP.
@Ethan-33697 жыл бұрын
It really doesn't matter to anyone in the US on a day to day basis because we know both systems so it is not much more of a hassle than standard. The only bad things are when you have engineers from the US working with engineers outside the US.

Work hardening of metals is not just a phenonmenon of fatigue, but it is employed in metal manufacturing to precisely harden metals. The metal is guided through a series of rollers of predetermined diameters and distances apart to dial in a specified hardness. And the last roller is calibrated to make the metal straight again.
@lehighluke7 жыл бұрын

It's not that your not smart or not as smart as them, as the saying goes you should never underestimate someone's intelligence, always underestimate their knowledge, for example Michael seems at the start of the video not to know the first thing about machines or workshops yet he is intelligent and inquisitive enough to listen, ask and ultimately learn bits of knowledge piece by piece from the far more experienced Tutor, I'm sure if he explicitly gave him a number of classes on workshop work, Michael would dedicate it to memory and learn. It's their curiosity that probably lead them to getting their physics degrees, and there's many others who know a shit ton about history or maths etc.
