People seem to forget that almost everything we interact with on a daily basis is DESIGNED in some way. Someone had to apply some level of artistic ability/design to make the products and services we interact with usable. Love this initiative!

Really wish this was longer. Thanks for the inspirational ideas and interesting concepts. My biggest problem with math as a kid was that I loved it but the math teachers themselves would discourage us with stuff like: "I know you all hate math but..." So glad that they're tying passion to math. Math becomes more and more fun the more it is applicable imo.

As a piano player who has synesthesia, I can vouch for the whole "applying synesthesia" thing. When I play music (especially if I memorize or go by ear), I think of anything from numbers, to colours, to shapes and images. It's fun stuff

Context is in my opinion an important part of learning some like math. In high school, I excelled in Calculus because the teacher put the math into a context that interested me (rocketry and space travel). Later on in my early years in college, I ran into a major math block, and I look back on it and see, the teacher gave no context to the math, I had nothing to conceptualize to get that ah ha moment.

It is a problem I think because division between people leads to bad things. I want to go to that school and i only brought race into it as a joke noticing i would be the only white one there, it would not bother me I dont think. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the term 'STEM' introduced mostly to differentiate between it and the arts? I thought the idea was to encourage more people to go through the STEM route as opposed to some form of art or humanities which are already overflowing with graduates. Adding the 'A' to it seems to be just whitewashing the terms meaning.

That's so funny that I see this now. I have been a professional musician in the past and I just had a "gift" that if I heard music I heard other parts that my hands in most cases just found (especially on guitar). Only the last few months having suffered a burn out I took time to analyse the maths and I was like: "ahhh!!! I get maths now too! If they'd only taught it like this in school!" Also I understand now why the combination of chords are how they are. Not just because I know which chords sounds good in what key just because this is what you culturally know innately but why it is that it sooths us. And here is a guy pretty much doing just that in such a cool way! SUPERB I LOVED IT.

I wish more schools would make school fun so kids would want to succeed. Kids need more arts in school. It is inspiring to see teachers like this. I hope a change happens so my daughter can have classes like these. And bring back industrial arts to like auto shop and metal shop.

This method for teaching is excellent. Everyone learns in different ways and we have applied this in a limited fashion to education already. What was missing that this school focuses on is finding and encouraging the individual student's interests in a topic. I love how the piano class show the mirroring of mathematics and music. On a side note, having STEAM as the set of core subjects makes learning practical applications of subject matter, especially math, much easier. It also echos back the the idea of the Renaissance Man or classical Greek scholar. An individual that is well versed in a multitude of topics and possibly a expert in one or two of them. Although, these scholastic ideals would have also included basic athleticism too. Perhaps STEAM should have another A?

***** um I don't know what your asking me lol all I meant was that STEAM is better because it includes all people and subjects since not everyone's brain is wired for science and math. Including arts doesn't mean making people do math while they draw or sing. I actually mean the arts. What if a kid wants to be a dancer or actor? You can't force STEM on a person who doesn't want or understand it. I am not biased or anything, I'm a hardware engineer and can't sing or play an instrument or draw to save my life. But I do understand that there are people out there that are complete opposite from me, they don't contemplate physics or chemistry but have the ability to be incredible artists and I believe forcing JUST stem on the population is a negative path for education. And arts include a wide range of subjects, literature, history, music, art, social studies, entertainment and so on. My original statement had nothing to do with financial outcomes of education. Ofcourse in this day and age, you'll make better money in a technical field but im thinking about the people who want to pursue the arts for themselves. Creativity can't be taken away from students and replaced by a militaristic form of education. All I ask is that people add one letter to stem and make it steam. I just want kids to have every option available to them.

New to tested and just a little confused. I thought Will and Norm were tested, noticed it says Adam Savages Tested. Did Adam take over tested? was it his all along? Did adam buy them out and now running it? Just curios about how it all came about.

+John Norris Forgive the lengthy essay :) Tested was founded by Will and Norm in 2010. At the time, they were part of a company called Whiskey Media alongside a few other sites including Giant Bomb and Comic Vine. These sites all shared an office and the site had a lot of "friends of Tested" appear in videos and podcasts, most prominently screenwriter Gary Whitta. In 2012, Whiskey Media split up, and while most of the other sites were acquired by CBS Interactive, Tested was acquired by BermanBraun, an LA production company. Previously, BermanBraun had worked with Adam and Jamie's production company on a tv-show called Unchained Reaction and a few other projects. Now they hired Adam and Jamie to boost Tested's profile. The site was subsequently relaunched as "Adam and Jamie's Tested", although given the Mythbusters' busy Mythbusting schedule the bulk of the content was made by the full-time team Will, Norm and Joey. Adam quickly became a regular, and Jamie would show up a few times each year, showing off something extremely dangerous and impressively over-engineered. :p About a month ago, Will left Tested to focus on a new virtual reality startup, and around the same time it became clear that Mythbusters' next season would be the last. Adam stated he would move a lot of his focus to Tested, where he'd be able to try new ideas and pursue his interests. Jamie stated he would be focusing on other projects, mainly product development, and that he was probably done being an on-screen personality. The site began using "Adam Savage's Tested" a few days ago, so it seems Jamie is officially out. Adam will probably be appearing a lot more, and it seems we'll be seeing the regular contributors like Jeremy Williams, Sean Charlesworth, Frank Ippolito, Patrick Norton and Kishore Hari appearing more often.

As a white person, I think black people intuit music better (it might be the church influence) than white people, or maybe it's just that music is found more in the home. The opposite may be true for math. So I think this is a great cross cultural opportunity and the potential for us all (black and white people) to get along is HUGE. Thanks Adam and as a teacher, in mostly black Oakland, I'm very excited about the Academy. I wish we had that here. Sorry if I have offended anyone with my lack of subtlety. Make Music Count!

The point of the music though was to be simple to engage younger kids that were strongly against maths into doing basic sums. None of the kids seem to be learning advanced calculus or anything like that, they're younger children doing basic addition.

+stefanozurich Pretty sure this is just a stepping stone into the realm of mathematics. Introducing them to mathematics in a form they understand such as music (even if it is simple 4 chord progression) would be enough to entice them to pick up more complicated mathematical disciplines such as calculus in higher education. Frankly I think this a phenomenal idea for people who may be more akin to doing math not by visual means or by memorization but instead by hearing. One of the major pitfalls of education is the rather rigid teaching curriculum as in it often favors kids who's learning style is similar to that of the teachers curriculum leaving those who learn differently at a disadvantage. Having a option such as this would increase the education of kids whom would be at a disadvantage in a normal curriculum.
