Don't learn Blender. It will consume your life. I spent so much time learning to 3d model and animate in Blender. I have always wanted to perform and act in my live streams, and after watching Dr. Disrespect perform in his Blender scenes, I knew I had to learn. So let me know, was it worth it for me to learn Blender? Should I keep making blender scenes as a beginner?

@@AdamBaird I'm just getting started switching over to Blender from Maya 3D and its been a few years. I gotta say, its bizarre how much is different between the programs. Both are super complex, but blender seems to be a lot more user friendly. Some friends of mine and I are working on a game together and I thought I could help with some creative inspiration. Having some 3D Modelling/Animation experience does help, but it is taking some time getting reacclimated. I look forward to seeing what you create!

6:00 in and it hurts me to hear that nobody in any of those threads told you that you can recover lost files by going: file>External Data>Find Missing Files and selecting the folder where your textures were stored. Also, a psa to make it so you can move your files without corrupting everything: File>External Data> Automatically Pack Resources. This way any texture files you add will be saved as a copy in the data of your .blend file.

It’s likely you’ll forget a lot, it’s how our brains work. The more important your brain thinks it is, the more you’ll remember. Enjoying the process is arguably the most important. As someone who's been modelling and texturing for well over 10 years, this is quite a phenomenal progression in just 100 hours. You should feel very proud of yourself :) As a tip though, if getting further into 3D is something you want to do, it would pay you early on to switch Blender's navigation style to "maya" in the user preferences. This is because that's what nearly every other piece of software uses as it's standard navigation. And since you might want to get into advanced texturing with Substance, advanced rendering with Marmoset or advanced cloth creation with Marvelous Designer, breaking the muscle memory early on it much easier than trying to do it after months or years of getting used to it (first hand experience there). Top work!

I work in about 5 different software packages all with different navigation. You can adapt. At least blender lets you pick left click vs right click now! If you want to do it professionally and you hop between software then configure everything to your level of comfort. I work mainly in CAD and going to blender the pan vs rotate keys are switched but after a fumble or two the muscle memory kicks in. Amazing progress in 100hours!

Found this video encouraging and inspiring for those of us getting started with Blender/3D. Short term my goal is to focus on character design, modeling and animation, but after doing some basic tutorials and learning of environments, lighting and stuff I realize there's lots more to Blender than you realize. Plus I've got an additional motivation: after 25 years in web development, I'm eager to switch to something else to put food on the table and I think 3d is my ticket, as demand will likely increase over time. Thanks for sharing 😀

I’m switching career fields from software engineering to 3D modeling because of the freedom to model anything desirable in any given field (video games, CA, architecture, etc) and always dreamed of creating models for video game devs to use. This project you did is very similar to where I want to be. I just started but the learning curve is huge in the course I’m using. However it’s still very interesting for me more then computer science. I’ll hope to get similar results in my first 100 hours

You are right, 3D modelling is much more fun and interesting than computer science, computer science is limited to abstraction while 3D modelling lets you create a simulation similar to our world. Computer science can also do that but 3D modelling gives you a visual simulation

Great job! it might be useful for you to know that after you move your files, you can use: file-external data- find missing files. it'll automatically update all the scene's textures with the new location. If you want to then consolidate them into one location, you can pack all resources (same menu), and then unpack into blend file directory.

Great video, and final render looks epic! A shame the chess overlay covers the most detailed part. If you installed through steam it tracks your blender hours for you. Also they're right about not getting discouraged. Blender is such a versatile program that you can spend thousands of hours using it, and still have no idea what most of the UI does. I've put in over 4000 hours and I could tell you all about creating functional character assets for video games, but I would be incredibly lost if I had to make a scene like this. Especially that rendering, it took TWO DAYS?! I don't know what I'd do with my life if I had to let my PC just chill and render for that long. I'd probably start googling render farms so I'd never have to do it again, lol.

So, hypothetically, let's assume that somebody wants to do Blender to this level, maybe they want to create a VRchat world, or maybe they want to create a custom background for zoom meetings. Let's crunch the numbers. 100 hours is four days and four hours of continuous Blending. This is a surprisingly attainable goal when put like that; some gamers clock up way more than that on one game in a month. A hypothetical normal person might set aside two hours to blend each day and take the weekends off, making it ten hours per week. This means that in ten weeks, or two and a half months, a person who has just created their first donut could reasonably create a whole space cantina, an underground lair, perhaps a spaceship interior, or any number of moderately detailed scenes, and have a very firm foundation of knowledge to build on. This is pretty damn inspiring, actually.
