It is a beautiful tachi, however it was very unlikely used by the imperial family. That is Fuji no Hana from Fujita family. The Royal family uses the Kiku no kamon only. During the Kamakura period their was a family known as Fujiwara (However not royalty) it is important to note at this time their was a war between Saeki vs. Fujiwara. Saeki is of royalty at this time. Their was a marriage between the Saeki and Fujita family later on. The war is known as Genji vs. Heiki which is very well known in Japan. My wife is from the Saeki & Fujita marriage.

That sword (Tachi) bears the clear markings of the Toyotomi clan. The most important figure of this clan was Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was the most powerful man in Japan in that time. We are talking about at least 1570, i.e. the time before the Battle of Sekigahara. The sword will probably not come from the Imperial family, but will have something to do with Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his clan. Of course, this does not reduce its historical value in any way - quite the opposite.

After watching this video, I couldn't find any evidence about the Toyotomi family. The family crest is not that of the Toyotomi family. Another thing, looking at the design of the scabbard and tsuba of this sword, it is not a particularly old sword. I guess that the sword was probably made about 100 years ago. It's not a very old sword, but it's definitely a very fine sword. A very expensive sword.

I was a bit interested in it, and I think it could probably be a gift from the Japanese foreign minister to the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand d'Este, who visited Japan sometime around 1892. The coat of arms on the sword will not be of the Toyotomi Hideyoshi family (even if it is originally based on it) but it is a historical emblem of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Yes we can make "stronger" steel today but it is very hard to duplicate what our ancestors did with just local Iron, a blast furnace and their hands. Not being disrespectful towards the country, but I think we can agree that there are some other countries (won't really give any names here) that always went for stuff of such high importance to some other country. It's basically having the English Crown lay in a Namibian museum (just for the sake of the example) 500 years from now. Things like that katana, or the Queen's Crown, are almost sacred to the countries they are coming from.

It's really hard to understand the name of the smith, but I think he said it was Rai Magotarō Kunitoshi (which matches what another commenter understood too). If that's indeed the case, then this is definitely a top-tier smith which not only holds a Saijo-saku rating in Fujishiro but also an impressive 300 points in Hawley. For comparison, the most famous Japanese sword smith Gorō Nyūdō Masamune holds a 400 point Hawley rating. There are very few ones that play in that league. It's a pity that we don't get to see much of the blade and that it was not cleaned before showing it. Instead the video focuses on the koshirae which is likely only around 150 years old and while very well crafted much less interesting than the blade itself.

@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged The best way to preserve a blade like that is to remove the oil regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and re-coat it with a fresh layer of oil. I don't see why they could not have done that for the video. As long as you don't use uchiko powder, there is not risk to the blade.

I have a lot of issues with the handling of this sword. Here's how the Japanese museums handle their swords: Katanakake and tachikake are equipped with small felt pieces where the blade or koshirae touches the stand (to prevent scratching). Put the sword of soft fabric that doesn't contain any acids rather than hard wood surfaces. You should wear a mouth covering and not talk while holding the blade near your mouth (to prevent spit and moisture droplets which can cause rust to form). Wear gloves. Don't handle it quickly and carelessly. A lot of these actions are not important if you're handling a new sword you intend to use in your practice, but for historical artifacts it is very important. The reason is that such as small scratches and rust builds up over time. Over only a few decades, all the small scratches will build up enough to deteriorate the antique significantly. If rust forms from acids or moisture, it will require removal of metal to restore it, which means there's a limit to how many times rust removal can be performed.

Indeed, but this sword is NOT what it is claimed to be. This is not a Kamakura sword. Everything is wrong: the shape, the tip, the hamon and the width. In best case scenario, this would be a Edo / Shinto sword. However, since it signed Rai Kunitoshi, it is a gimei (fake signature) and its value is even less. The koshirae (scabbard and fittings) are very nice, but most likely 20th century.

The Tiachi is longer than the Katana, and from what I read was was because they were primarily made for people on horse back is why the lanyard configuration and created by a process of heat folding and clay tempering/cooling processes. I have one very similar to that one in my gun safe, along with my Hoyt Carbon Compound Bow set, AR-15 and AR-10 POF-308 rifle. I have a cheap stainless steel Katana that I keep as display in my living room, just for fun on purpose, so when someone has a birthday, it's a great laugh for cutting cake! It's best to store the Tiachi in oil wrappings (thin plastic wrapping with oil) as they will rust very easily (high carbon steel)! My intent is not to harm people, but definitely will protect you from those who wish to harm you, given if you know how to use it! This kind of sword is not easy to come by as officially made are very limited by the crafter, usually handed down by traits in the family. It is common in Japan where people learn generation after generation techniques! Wishing you all the very best while always being humble!... Life is about living, love is understanding his commandments, and honor comes from righteousness!

Amazing sword! I couldn't take a good look at the blade, but the koshirae parts (tsuba, fuchi-kanagu, tsuka-gashira and so on) are as beautiful as those swards I have been seeing in the museums in Tokyo. Especially, I love the nanako finish of black iron ornaments with the gold go-san no kiri pattern, seems very high in quality. Lucky to meet such master piece.

Some may know this others may not, but in the traditional sense a katana sword would be made and it would essentially be “alive” and one way to test whether the sword was good in combat is to test it on a living person, then the sword would earn its soul. So in short every sword made up until the mid 1800’s would have been used to kill someone after it was created, usually it was a convict or slave.

In the future, if a Japanese emperor step down to leave the way to his son or whoever, he just need to bring 100 katanas with him and wear it to any show/invitation/nation dinner... (and make sure there’s plenty of photos with it, then whenever he needs a pocket money without the need of approval from Japan chamber of representatives or his country budget, he just pawn one of it along with photo to prove it and his signature along with his personal stamp on the certificate. He never pulled the handle off so we could see the markings of the sword master who made it. It should have gold inlet on his markings if it was going to an emperor or someone of any importance. Also the time frame would be indicated.

@@francis4281 There has been a few that leaked out of Japan. Back in WW2 swords were given to US soldiers for souvenirs. Most were average swords . But they didn't know or care to know how to identify higher quality swords. And a few really old and important swords leaked out this way

@Dakota Travis you do Realize they change the koshirae or Furniture every 100 years or until they have to make a another set of koshirae because its falling apart thats why it looks new and the Blade has been polished multiple times over the years so much that the edge to the spine is thin and not as wide as it once was .
