Do one coat or layer of the caulk, let it dry. Apply a second coat, then use a dry paint brush to smooth it out (vertically / up and down). This will mimic the faux wood grain on the door you’re patching and help blend your hole patch into the rest of the door (as good as it can be).

Why did this get nearly 1k of downvotes? Usually people make one single mistake and that makes everyone downvote a video, or perhaps the solution is garbage. But I couldn't find a major mistake, and the result looks great. Any ideas on why people downvoted so much?
@justinhc1235 жыл бұрын
I was with you up until you said “caulk.” I find that wood filler or bondo, as others have said, is a much better product for this application. Good idea about creating a faux grain with a card-just use wood filler instead. Easier to work and sand afterward. Thanks for the video!

great video, I did similar with the sticks, then used sheetrock 20, just before dry time, used a putty knife to mimick grains in wood, total hole repair time was 38 mins, including paint.... great tip on the expanding foam for harder repairs, I did enjoy watching this.... thanks.... oh ya, I did not have to sand the sheetrock 20, just knocked it down with putty knife before it set up.... cheers

Packing tape on the end of caulk tubes works better than a nail. Wrap it once. Fold over the top and tape tape that down. Great video!
@mrbee48827 жыл бұрын
Bondo works better than caulk. It hardens up really nice but is still soft enough to copy the wood grain by scratching it in with a nail or utility knife.

I know it's been a few years since the release of this video, but great video! I've done this method loads of times and by far the best way, the only thing I do different is use a specific exterior caulking as it won't shrink. As for sealing the end of any caulking tube is to use a bit of TUCK tape, works like a charm everytime. Thanks
@moee2227 жыл бұрын

I like to use a wet paint brush on the wet caulk to duplicate the wood grain, but your credit card method seemed to work pretty good too.
@MauriceCalis6 жыл бұрын
Great trick! Would have liked to see it dry, but I'll definitely be using that trick. A Couple of Tips: You can use half the amount of foam and let it expand; more than enough. Also, just learned to always let the can point down; can get so much more out of the can that way. Also, the screw is great for pulling out with pliers to the remove the hard stuff from the caulk tube.
@mikecrabtree82005 жыл бұрын
With the expansion foam you are not NOT supposed to use the red can which is normally triple expansion foam, but the blue or blueish can which is low expansion foam. The red can will in most cases over expand and push the panels too much and when used near the edge as this is, it can separate the Venere from the door frame causing more damage than you had in the first place. Also, while the caul trick works, you are better off using a wood putty. Which can be sanded, where caulk almost without exception can not be caulked, at least not properly..

Keep tube of caulk from drying out: Take 4 inches of packing tape, fold over tip leaving a void. pinch sides of void to seal. Gently fill void and release gun when void full. Whole thing rips away up to a year later leaving fresh goop at the tip. Ta da.

I used the patch netting that you use to fill a hole in the wall and then super light spackle stuff and then drew the grain after my last coat. Worked great. But yours looks much easier. Plus now I have lots of doors to practice your way as my son thought i was a manly thing to do in the home by leaving his mark on the doors.

For people who wish to reattach the door stop (e.g. in rented apartments), could the flexibility cause the paint to crack?
