I really wish that, instead of remaking popular movies, they would take the older movies that had good concepts but were done poorly and create better versions.

I liked the new Mean Girls-movie well enough, but I don't get why musicals aren't marketed as musicals, because part of the reason Tick Tick Boom from 2021 worked brilliantly was that they was completely frank about "this is a movie about making musicals for people that love musicals with lots of musical references in it, take it or leave it" and then there is no disappointment. With the new Mean Girls-movie the marketing means that it will annoy those that aren't prepared for it being a musical, but then they've also made the songs more poppy and radio-friendly in a way that I feel also may annoy those who really love the musical on stage, so it ends up in a way where it will annoy a lot of viewers. I personally liked it (I didn't love it, but I liked the songs and I felt that there were some quite good performances) and I do think that if there should be a remake of Mean Girls, it's great that it's an adaption of the musical because then it can stand on it's own more. But as a person that is admittedly quite neutral to both the original film and the Broadway Musical (which I haven't seen, but I had a short period where I was obsessed with I'd rather be me), but really loves musical theatre, I would have loved it so much more if it felt proud of being a musical instead of now when it's more halfhearted about it and that makes it a little bit disappointing both for musical theatre geeks like me and musical theatre-sceptics.
@Agent160FTW Жыл бұрын
I always knew it was a musical, but I do think that the logo doesn't make it that obvious and the first trailers didn't market the singing and dancing. I personally feel that they could have marketed it as a musical in a bigger way.@Ks-101

Have you seen the tik-toks yet of audiences in the movie theater groaning when they break out into song 😂. You're right, they definitely didn't market this as a musical---they did the same with The Color Purple. If you know the audience isn't out there for musicals, why do it??? While the idea here was highly unnecessary, I found myself to be quite pleased with the new rendition. The cast is really what held the film together, Renee Rap did such a fantastic job as Regina George. Any single scene with her on screen was just mesmerizing. The dance numbers and singing is drastically more memorable than half of the Disney films we had last year. So I give props, I think they did a great job at still having the same formula but doing enough to make it stand out a bit more differently. I came to see if it was nostalgic and fun and they did exactly that! It’ll work for some and it surely won’t for many. But let me make one thing clear, original will never be beat. They still very much nailed it.

So I was tickled leaving the theater but you're right, it's definitely subjective based on individual preferences! I think a major issue is they didn't really advertise it as a musical so people would find that jarring for sure.

Yes, but for a movie, it's really terrible. There are better musical movies out there that knew how to make it still feel realistic, even though the characters sing their emotions sometimes. HSM was the one that made Disney realize how profitable it could be. Though, we can't forget thanks to The Cheetah Girls and the episodes of That's So Raven and Even Steven's for the future possibilities of HSM and Descendants. They knew when to incorporate songs and when not to. Usually, with the fact that there is a talent show ahead so they need to practice. Raven loved fashion and singing, so that's how she planned to audition. I've never seen the Even Steven's episode, so I can't say how that happened. But The Cheetah Girls were a group of girls who aspired to become real artists. Songs is how they connected and let out their emotions when it was too uncomfortable to just speak about. HSM did the same. There were songs that were apart of the story line, and others were to help the characters express their emotions. Mean Girls tried to do that, and failed miserably. None of the songs felt appropriate, and I don't mean this like it's not suitable for minors, I just mean that it was done in a way that does not make any sense no matter the occasion. Especially the anger/revenge songs.. they were extremely, very bad. Hardly anyone is actually good at singing, and it all just feels so fake. The other movies and shows I mentioned at least feel like they could happen. They were what I would call humble. No one knew if they would succeed or not, so they just had fun and it all paid off. It seems the whole cast and crew of Mean Girls thought they would break records, and that mindset lead to everyone despising it because you could clearly see how they all had big egos when filming this.

Yeah ..I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. It was cute, but doesn't hit like the original. As you said, some of the acting was off, and the dialogue was bad. Most of the "jokes" didn't land. It just wasn't funny. The singing was good. It also felt too safe, PC, and G rated compared to the original, which didn't hold back anything. The original all over just had a better script, better acting and comedic timing, and didn't care about "not offending anyone." It didn't play it safe and therefore had a much clearer message. This movie held back a lot, and had so much potential. The actress that played Cady was cute and definitely reminded me of Amy Adams.

I'm always hesitant to watch reboots of cult classics, they were cult classics for a reason. They usually flew under the radar due to poor marketing or just having a bizarre concept, but later get the recognition they deserve because it's just one of those slow burn movies that works because of the chemistry. You usually can't recreate that. So you're making a movie with the realistic goal of maybe being kinda good but not as good as the original.

I’ve never seen the original or the broadway play so I got no prior expectations to this version. Adding to that is that I have the regal unlimited so I try to see every new release that I can. As someone who's seen the original Mean Girls musical, I wouldn't really say I was a fan of that either. Unlike better musical adaptations of movies, it just felt like the same story but only this time with hit or miss songs that often time undercut important and funny moments in the original movie. This new movie is basically that just with less songs, so I can't even say if I like it better or worse. I would honestly recommend the Heathers musical. It actually does something different with the story, such as making certain changes for the better and developing the characters more, along with a WAY better soundtrack than Mean Girls. It also doesn't rely off of the original movie to enjoy it, meanwhile Mean Girls felt completely reliant off the legacy of the movie.

I'm actually excited to watch this movie, but I actually like musicals. (Except for La La Land, that movie was trash, but even though you like it, we're still cool, haha) I know it's obvious you didn't like the movie from the thumbnail, so I'm going to have to bail at 30 seconds and come back later. However, as someone who usually jumps on the "remakes are stupid cash grabs bandwagon", I'm going to disagree with you on this one because the original isn't that great. We rewatched the original and it honestly doesn't hold up well. The comedic use of Regina's body image issues is sickening (and I say this as a skinny person), the lesbian joke that is repeated three times was never funny, and the way the whole "I'm from Africa" bit is presented is kinda racist. I don't see anything wrong with someone having nostalgia for a movie they like while also wishing it had less problematic parts. At the end of the day Mean Girls doesn't really deserve a seat next to movies like Miss Congeniality and Legally Blonde in my view. I think there's plenty of other movies out there that do the "clicky high school" stick better.
@arkanamaster496110 ай бұрын
agreed. The original mean girls is way too dated as an early 2000s film that im glad they modernized it for the new one. Also Lindsey Lohan as Cady i could never really buy as nice girl becomes mean girl unlike the new actress they got to play cady actually felt believable. I also maybe its just the fact im in my 20s but I just never found the original that good. Like none of the actors i thought were that outstanding that when people said "Rachael McAdams was amazing as Regina" and im just like "The OG Regina was played by Rachael McAdams?" Like thats how much i felt those characters arent really that iconic imo and i love watching movies and musicals. I felt the new mean girls being an adaptation of the broadway musical just adds to the rewatch value of the movie compared to the original.

@MovinLikeAMaybach Жыл бұрын
Like after 2015 for some reason they lost the ability to make a good reboot and remake like when Star Trek first came back it was a hit, when Jurassic Park came back it was a hit and the first of the Rey Star Wars was a hit and then after that it was miss after miss after miss where there just kept shooting them selves in the foot over and over and over again like its absolutely incredible the formula is pretty simple just do a slight variation of the original with basically rhe same mechanics just with some new energy maybe fix some plots holes or do something slightly different but no drastic changes and call it day. Like what person convinced the movie company that making it into a musical was gonna go well. Idc if it’s adapted from a play nobody knows that and if you thought people would like that you would have told people about it rather then letting them find out in the theater. Musicals are not popular and they ain’t ever gonna have more than a niche following and you can’t just make them popular by shoving it in take a lesson from your iconic line you can’t make fetch happen

How many reasons can I think of to explain why I would never watch a movie like this? Suffice it to say that a lot of reasons come to my mind but the one reason why I wouldn't watch this movie in particular is because it clearly lacks any heart. The people who made movies back in the day are fat now. They are no longer hungry and as we say in the Streets "they eating now" which can roughly be translated to mean that they have successfully accomplished their goals. Now that the hunger is gone and they have been satiated they're fat and lazy (on a creative level). There is nothing worse than an artist who is not hungry, well, maybe there is one thing that is worse and that is a so-called artist who does not care anymore. You can clearly see that they don't care here in this movie. All the good ole comedians, actors and movie makers are old now. They have enjoyed success for a long time now. They are fat now. They rest on the loreals now. They don't care- look at all the people from SNL, and 30 Rock, that group of people, look at the stuff they have been making, its all trash. Look at Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Sacha Baron Cohen, look at the last thing each one of these people made and I guarantee you it is trash, thats cause they'll all rich and fat now. I don't know if they know (or even care) but they are leaving a huge opening for those of us who are still hungry. For those of us who are still lean and sharp from an artistic perspective. You will look up and see a new group of movie makers much like that awesome crew that made Geeks and Freaks, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad and Pineapple Express, ... You will start seeing new people fill in the zoid that the OGs have made with their lack luster performances and contributions, I mean Tina Fey made this movie? She used to have genuine and original ideas and concepts, not to say that I ever thought she was very funny but she at least made an effort that you could see and here in this movie, you can see no one made any real effort. I guess thats just the way it is, the hungry devour the fat, the fast overcome the slow, the young defeat the old and the and the strong roll over the weak (artistically). I guess what we should learn from this is if you are an artist of any elk you must stay and remain hungry.
