Sure, we worship youth & beauty. But art doesn’t end in your 20’s... or 30’s or 40’s. Reality check= I’m 62, support myself full time performing, just got my first 2 endorsement deals THIS year, currently booking regional tours for NEXT year... BTW, played my first live gig 2 yrs ago. If you are waiting for someone to open doors You are prolly asking the wrong questions anyway. Best advice I got this year (from an A-list musician) = you create your own opportunity. Stop worrying ‘bout what doors are closed and go create some open ones. - peace, Greg Greyson

Greg, THANK YOU brother! I'm 59 and have spent my career as a video editor making TV spots. 2 years ago I got divorced (after 31 years) and went through rehab and what I know is this: Pain is a very effective muse. Over these last couple years I've made music that I FINALLY actually like. I played my first live open stage in Nashville last year. The pandemic has slowed live work down but I was told by a woman who owns 2 clubs that I 'belong' in Nashville. I know I have a strong music product but it's sometimes easy to let the "you're too old" crowd gnaw at your soul. The path to having original music heard, liked and purchased is not clear so we dig around in the online muck looking for a pearl. Thanks for providing one just when I happened to need it!

Beethoven wrote his most incredible music in his late 40s and 50s - music that changed the course of Western music singlehandedly and created legendary pieces we still listen to 200 years later. His entire city turned out for his funeral ceremony. The next generation of composers saw him as a living god. For me, he was the greatest artist that humanity has ever produced. Imagine if he had stopped writing when he hit his 30s. He was just getting started.

But left the music industry when I was 22 because I would always find myself in the hands of exploitative individuals. People would shed tears whenever I sang. I'm now 32 and honestly a little upset for quiting on myself because of other people. But I was too young and was dealing with a lot of trauma from years bullying and emotional abuse. Bruce Willis first major role at 32. Steven Seagal first movie 36 Music is not olympics or classical music where everything is a factor. Do what you love and what you enjoy. Screw others. Music business is very ungrateful and unfair and most of what is on demand is usually is what on MTV. Do you like what is on MTV? It means that most of pop stars don't even write music. These boys bands or pop stars are products based on looks and maybe having ok voice, but yet, there are plenty of ways how to make terrible singer to sound on a record like he is amazing singer. It is investment to make stars out of them and benefit recording companies. These projects like Justin Bieber in music or Conor McGregor in sports are business projects to make more money even by being so so. Just to compare, Conor McGregor has so much money that others who have better fighting records, more victories and title defenses can only dream what Conor has financially. Justin Bieber doesn't write his songs while there are plenty of those who play multiple instruments, write songs and are good singers can't achieve something in music. Is it fair? No. But this is entertainment business, especially big waters of music business. The other example is when Lil Xan got famous so fast and instantly became unknown because of his drug addiction and mental problems. Even banks blocked his banking accounts so he can't buy drugs. Is it a success? Avril Lavigne had success after debut album, but after second and third album there was no success. All songs were written by producers team. Even this opportunities when producers do it for you doesn't guarantee you a good musical career. Some of musicians have side jobs. Just read this article - "17 indie artists on their oddest odd jobs that pay the bills when music doesn't". Do music, do it smart by making a good marketing plan and don't do it as a main job. Selling music on musical platforms like beatport doesn't guarantee good money because depends on the genre and how good track is and still does not mean good track equals big success. Do it step by step. There are plenty of musicians and Dj's who do evaluation of income and if you think the money you make producing music and playing gigs are good, then you made it! Just don't compete. Music is about your experience and what you think and do and want to show. Competitiveness exists between elitists for newbies harder to join music market. There are plenty of known Dj's, but as a producers they don't produce and were exposed for this. Especially Instagram models and those who are from wealthy families. Better have dignity and make your music than pay others (ghost producers) and sell what is not yours and claim that you are a producer

@@chickoffthechain7949 I’m glad it was encouraging. There is definitely no timetable for this, we all have our own journey. Investing in your music is definitely the right thing to do. Adam, I absolutely love this video. This is one of my biggest fears, and I've let this fear consume me. I'm a 29-year-old singer/rapper and I also want to learn to produce. This fear started to grow when I released a really great single a few years ago, and I expected it to be my "meal ticket". I knew nothing about promoting myself, I had absolutely no idea how social media worked and I honestly felt like things would fall into my lap. The single did pretty well, but I had no idea where to go next. I had no plan. I was definitely humbled when things started to fall apart in my life and I then became stagnant because I felt like a failure. I also allowed myself to believe the things that I was being told about being a woman and being way too old to be a music artist. After today, I will no longer let this fear consume me. My boyfriend introduced me to your channel about a week ago and I've learned so much in such a short amount of time. I feel comfortable listening to you. You've truly inspired me to keep going. I'm taking notes and I'm going to put my all into this...wisely of course. I've subscribed and turned on your notifications. Thank you for all of these amazing gems.

I went full time as a musician at the age of 30 when my wife, also a musician, and I found out she was pregnant. We were broke and I was working odd jobs. We knew it would be too terrifying to take the plunge into music later if we built our family’s sense of security on odd jobs, so we agreed that I would quit everything but music immediately and set out to make it work by the time our daughter was born. We set an income goal and unexpectedly exceeded it by the grace of God. In addition to the classic songwriter haunts and indie venues that paid little, I added bar band shows, covers with originals peppered in; private parties, some weddings. Was offered a licensing deal that year and got my first syncs. When I was a sideman touring the world in my 20’s, everyone thought I’d made it, but I could never afford rent without picking up extra work while home in New York City. I realized I’d never be a productive singer-songwriter because I was investing my time in someone else’s band (a great one though!) and didn’t have enough money to live, let alone pay for making my own records. I decided to find a more affordable place to live and save up for my own studio and do it all myself. Haven’t looked back. I played my first major music festival last year at the age of 35, wife onstage with me, our second infant backstage with her big sister and Gramma. Willie Nelson didn’t have his first major hit til he was 42 - I’ll be reminding myself of that when I turn 37 later this year! Man does not live by bread alone. Keep the faith and keep going!

At 29 yrs old, i didn't know more than 3 chords. I've learned all I can, studied song writing. I knew I'd get older, so I write for universal subjects and experience that all people have, at all ages. I don't want people to associate my music with an age group. I want to create laughter, tears and goosebumps. This was a good video. I'm going to show them what the point is.

I’m 33 and one thing I got going for me is that I look really young. Nobody ever guesses my age. My thing is I been rapping since I was 11 was real serious about it from age 20-23 and was really good like making good songs good but I got addicted to pills for years. I’m clean now and have been for 5 years and just started getting back into music a year ago but now I’m married with a full time job where I physically work my ass off and like I wanna get really dedicated to the music where I’m writing all the time but so exhausted from work specially in summer cuz don’t have AC in the warehouse. And I get really bummed when I can’t think of any rhymes some days. Like 10 years ago I was coming up with stuff left and right. But now even tho the stuff I write I think is pretty good it’s not as frequent and some of the stuff I do think of is kind of basic.

This actually made me feel better. I really appreciate you saying this. I’m 27 gunna be 28 in a month and I just keep dreading the fact that time is slipping away. I’ve been singing and have been passionate about music and entertainment since I was born. I’ve spent my youth and years dealing with mental health issues and I feel sad because (I feel as a woman especially) I’m losing time to pursue music and performing. I get told frequently that I’m so talented and this and that but I guess I’m scared. I am afraid of the burnout lifestyle a lot of musicians complain about especially considering that I have mental health issues. Anyway thanks for the motivation

Omg this is literally me. There's so much pressure on us women to start young and be youthful and all (which is oddly creepy when you think about it). But there are artists like Adele, Taylor Swift, who are old now, but people stil consider them "young". Same with dua lipa. Mariah Carey was in her prime since her early 20s, but then once her career ended in 1999-2000, she came back in her 30s and rejuvenated her career. And she even lied that she was born in 1970, when it was revealed years later that she was born a year before that lmao Many teenage artists burn out by the time they're in their 20s. It's better to start later and continue on, rather than start early and burn out easily. Let me know how things are working out for you!!

I needed to hear this I'm 34. Been playing guitar and singing just as a hobby since I was 13. I just recently started writing my own songs and putting them out there on Spotify, KZbin, TikTok and more. But just a thought came to mind why haven't I ever tried to write songs or put music out there in the past. I thought maybe I'm too old to get started with a music career. But you helped me realize you are never too old to write songs and get your music out there. It would be nice if more talented artists use my songs. Maybe I just write songs for others or maybe I actually get recognized as a singer as well who knows. All I know is I love making music and never going to stop.

Yasin Muhammad I’m sorry you felt that you were too old at 22... the media and other people are always trying to tear everyone down for everything. It doesn’t get better, everyone is made to feel insecure about their age, their looks. It makes it so that no one feels like they can live. 23 is young, even if you feel like it’s not. Our lives are long. Do what you want.

I have to start out by saying thank you dude. I smacked 30 in January. I have a terrible history of doubting myself. My abilities. My competence. You may not even see this with the massive number of comments, but my biggest obstacle is that the "cocksuckers" that say you can't do this shit for whatever reason, including age, can't compare to the negative voice in my head that I've always harbored and adhered to. I want to be done with that person in there. I have talents and capabilities that only I and my close friends know the potential of. And I want to live up to this potential to create fulfillment and happiness in my life for myself and everybody I love. You hit a lot of points in this video that spoke so loudly to me. I just want to prove myself wrong...and 100% right at the same fuckin time. Because I have it in me. I stumbled on your page just tonight and have been watching several vids for hours. Lots of value in your honest words. Thumb smashed, subscribe smashed, Bell smashed. Again, I just say all this to say I really appreciate your content and your inspiration. Continue to be great bro.
