Horrific to think the Switch is 6 years old already...But I think you nailed it with the point that a true successor isn't coming anytime soon. There's essentially zero market pressure to do so, and historically Nintendo has never jumped ship off their successful handhelds so quickly, they keep making slight upgrades. It's just doing way too well still to just wave goodbye to it.

The Gameboy lasted over 10 years till the GBA came out so Nintendo is probably going to do that. Especially since they have said they wanted this generation to last 10 years. So we need a Gameboy color soon. The important point to note with the Game boy color versus other upgrade systems is that the Game boy color got a lot of exclusive games whereas the DSi only had like 3 games and the 3ds XL only had like 6.

The retention of the Original Wii was abysmal. Some signs that the Wii users would not stick with the Wii u. It is clear to see why they moved on after 7 years, but with the switch, it seems to be a greater attachment to the device. I give the thing 9 years of official support, meaning they send new consoles to the stores. But the next year is the last we will see first-party games on the switch. Maybe a Kirby or another small game on the 8th year.

The retro game service on the Wii and Wii U was called Virtual Console. But you actually bought each game individually on there and technically 'owned' them rather than the Netflix style service we have now on NSO. Strangely enough the original VC on the Wii was probably the best one. It had the largest selection of games and the most supported consoles including the Master System and TurboGrafx-16. It even had amazing TurboGrafx-16 gems like Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Lords of Thunder. I agree with you 100% on the Switch. Having an absolutely gigantic install base like the Switch has is a very rare thing so they want to milk it for all its worth as that is a shit ton of people to sell software to. I think this is why they made a sequel to Breath of the Wild for it, another Splatoon and why they're making a bunch of new DLC for the 9 year old(!!) Mario Kart 8. They know the next MK is still a long ways away with the Switch successor so they decided to add 48 more courses to tide people over. Some kind of upgraded model akin to the Gameboy Color also seems likely. Mostly just to appease 3rd party developers who are probably always complaining to Nintendo about the Switch's dated hardware. Metroid Prime Remastered also shows what that dated hardware is still capable of in the right hands. Really incredible stuff, amazing that old Tegra X1 can do that.
@GenerationZ313 Жыл бұрын
Honestly I'm sure whenever the next Nintendo console comes out they may just re-release Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with the Booster Course pass included and call it the MK8 Super Deluxe Edition or Booster Edition. As for retro games, I wish Nintendo took the Microsoft approach and just let us buy the games outright and offer a discount for each title if we have an NSO subscription.

i believe that the major update may come in the form of a dock! with a chip that enables super resolution or DLSS to improve graphics and frame rates in docked mode. because portable mode is just perfect the way it is. We can't see higher resolution in the portable screen, it's just not confortable to read text in higher resolutions in portable screen. but the dock with DLSS is the closest to a switch pro, without making the general public feel that they've been left out

It is just not possible because the video output is very barebones and the console is not intended in any way to have a external chip helping with processing power. On the best case it can have something like a Marseille upscaler built in, something to "beautify" the image quality, but improving framerates is impossible. If the console had something like a proprietary protocol or something like Thunderbolt it could had a dock that improved the performance like Macbooks can use external GPUs.

I have a strong gut feeling that Nintendo will likely stick to hardware similar to the Switch for the foreseeable future. What I really love about it is the fact that they now can consolidate their handheld and console games into a single platform. As a consumer, it’s a godsend not to have to buy two separate devices in order to play all the games I want to play. I imagine for Nintendo it’s also a huge weight off their shoulders not having to market two systems simultaneously. I think it’s paramount that the next console be backwards compatible with the Switch. Having an already great library of games be accessible right off the bat along with new titles make for a much more enticing system. As for NSO and the Gamecube; I feel that the overwhelming majority of games from that era are sophisticated enough to warrant the effort of remastering them, as opposed to simple emulation.

It's doubtful, DS had really good chance, and was 20M more in the same point in time, however they quickly announced and released 3DS, but if they wanted to, they could wait at least year or two with the 3DS (since DS had very good 20M year in 2010) and prolong the DS life and sales a little more, and it would pass the PS2, But they didn't.

It is sad to see how much Nintendo has changed in 6 years. With the Wii U, the focus was on the first party games and using their quality to save the console sales. With the Switch the focus is on the marketing, on selling the same console over and over with different color combinations, on re-selling every Wii U game at full price, on renting emulated games behind an expensive subscription. Everything is more expensive than on the Wii U, everything you buy these days feels like a bit, or a lot, like a ripoff. Because, as you said very well, the typical Nintendo customer "will buy it anyway" and Nintendo is counting, now more than ever, on that. Times have changed.
@ThePreciseClimber Жыл бұрын
> "re-selling every Wii U game at full price" Yeah, that's pretty weaksauce. I remember back on PS3 a PS2 re-release would only cost 10-15 bucks. Hell, the Nathan Drake Collection on PS4 was $60. That's still $20 per game instead of $60. And the price of Playstation and Xbox games actually lowers over time. Imagine that.
@PianistTanooki Жыл бұрын
As a Wii U owner, that generation sucked. Many of the games were fine, but none of them ever panned out to be games where I felt "glad" for owning the system. The Wii U saw no exclusive Zelda game, no Metroid games, and the mainline entries to their longtime franchises such as Mario and Smash Bros. were… fine. But again, nothing spectacular. I was much happier with their Wii lineup, to be perfectly honest. The Switch launched with one of the best Zelda games, it gave me a Mario game that I'd been waiting over a decade for (Super Mario Odyssey), it saw the first mainline Metroid game since Metroid Fusion (a 19 year gap), not to mention the remastered version of Metroid Prime, and it saw a far more consistent lineup of games. No, I'm not going to defend them pulling shit like charging $60 for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on Switch when it was $50 on Wii U, but I'd much rather take today's Nintendo over what we had in the Wii U era. Wii U era was just downright depressing.
@starpier Жыл бұрын
@@PianistTanooki Honestly speaking, for Zelda you were covered. Apart from Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, Breathe of the Wild was developed first and foremost for the Wii U and ported to the Switch at the last minute. The Wii U is the console with most Zelda games available. I understand you had to wait the end of the console cycle for an original game, but it was at least worth the wait. Bayonetta 2, the best game in the series, made me glad to own the console. Same happened when MK8 came out (original MK games on Switch are still missing). SM Odyssey is very good, indeed, but we had Super Mario 3D world which was just as excellent. If you look at the amount of original first party titles that came out during the Wii U era, you will notice they were significantly more than on the Switch. I was more than happy that Metroid came back on the Switch, but during the years before we saw mostly remasters or ports (BOTW) rather than original exclusive games. If you looked at the top selling games on the Switch, during the first years, you would find Wii U games at the top of the ranking. My biggest complaint about the Wii U is the lack of JRPGs (Xenoblade X and very little more) and the third party support (Square-Enix) to bring them to the console. In this regard the Switch made a better job for sure. Never the less, during the Wii U years, I felt Nintendo put us, the hardcore gamers, at the center of their plans. They tried to rip us off with the Amiibo or the DLCs of Super Smash Bros, sure, but for the most part they didnt treat us like walking ATMs. Can you say the same of the current Nintendo?
@josesalinas9949 Жыл бұрын
Idea: Do more Gamecube remasters and start with StarFox Adventures Remastered. Release with added bonus levels flying the arwing. Then if it does great in sales, greenlight a part 2 with expanded story and gameplay and multiple playable characters each with unique level mechanics ie: Fox is the baseline obviously and just give Krystal adjustments in speed and strength, Peppy levels play like stealth, Falco maybe has timed gaunlet element to parts his stages to utilize his speed, and Slippy can a glass cannon overall build that has QTE elements in his control scheme when in combat making him feel very unique from the others. Now you can start spinning out squeals to all the good Gamecube games by making them great!

Remember Nintendo is relying on third parties for their chip production, so that's where any reliable information on upcoming Nintendo hardware will come from. There were reliable outlets (especially Digital Foundry who knows a lot of developers and hardware people) who reported that Nintendo told Switch developers that a Switch with 4k and DLSS capability was in the works , but it got cancelled because of the chip shortage. The Nvidia leak revealed a Tegra successor that is more powerful (think base PS4 level) so I think it's plausible Nintendo uses that chip or something based on it . With PS4 level graphics and DLSS capability we can have some solid looking games. The Switch OLED uses an upgraded version of the original Tegra for better battery life and thermal performance , so I think Nintendo is fine with upgrading hardware.

I love how you dissected the topic realistically. I admit that I am not seeing many people predict the Switch sunsetting as the flagship console in 2026. But your points make so much sense. There was one other notable figure that I wanted to touch on: the Switch has seen year-over-year declines the last few years, but those declines are from such a high peak that FY 2024 is still expected to sell 15 million consoles. And if you project a similar decline for FY 2025, then that’s still 10-11 million units. If you look back on Wii sales, Nintendo didn’t decide to release the Wii U until Wii sales fell to 1.5 million units a QUARTER! And the Switch sales are no where near there yet. I was was projecting a next gen release in mid to late 2025, while you were projecting a 2026 release amid the release of Switch console variants. There is actually facts to back up your data. Nintendo was able to temporarily blunt (and even reverse) its sales declines with the release of the Zelda “TOTK” console variant, so it’s reasonable to assume that the release of a few more Switch variants can allow Nintendo to squeeze out another year of 10+ million units into 2026. Let’s keep things in perspective though; this won’t be easy and it will be amazing if Nintendo can actually accomplish this. Who knows if Nintendo will ever get this close to beating the PS2 worldwide sales soon. They are reaching for the stars, but it’s a realistic possibility.

I could see a PSTV-like 3rd model of the switch which basically removes the screen and directly connects to the TV with a couple slots for multiple Switch Carts. A lot of people already only use the Pro controller so it basically could save on cost with no screen, but allow a streamlined video output for home use only.

I agree everything you said about pushing gamecube. I think they will also do a OLED Tears of the Kingdom branded Switch, and why not double down on a Gamecube Classic and charge $150 for it. Everyone will be jumping at the chance to own ALL OF THE ABOVE.

13:28 March 1st Nvidia was hacked, we did see Switch's successor Tegra chip called T239. In Linux Kernel we saw that that Tegra chip completed design and engineer samples have existed since April 2022 with the chip physically ready for production in August 2022. This isn't rumors, the Linux Kernel updates are public knowledge, and that chip is in the Nvidia hack's new NVN(2) API which is Nvidia's custom API for Nintendo. Outside of that, it is all rumors.

Since there is a lot of evidence pointing towards new hardware this year, I’d say we could get a Switch + that is slightly more powerful this year and a Switch 2 in 2025 which would put it ahead of the PS6 in either 2027 or 28.
@OtavioFesoares Жыл бұрын
I don’t think that will happen. It’d be too costly to just design 2 different SoCs.

I definitely don't see the switch going away anytime soon although I have noticed the big triple a games are slowing down a bit at least for now. I really like the switch but yeah man it really could use a boost in power, it's got some ancient hardware in it
@mileshollis6258 Жыл бұрын
My guess is a VR headset for an updated model of the switch. Comes with a new dock that connects to a headset - it'd have to have more powerful hardware for the VR, which could mean native higher resolution for TVs & still plays switch games. Even if the VR aspect falls off in interest like the 3D of the 3DS did, you still get updated hardware that's backwards compatible, similar overall to the 3DS upgrade from the DS. I feel nintendo focuses strongly on 'delivering a new kind of experience' with each new device to justify the hardware upgrade, and this seems like a likely fit to me.

7 years seems to be the standard for a console lifespan before a next-gen upgrade come about these days, honestly. PS3 & 360 both had a 7-8 year time-frame before their successors came out, & then it was 7 years from when the PS5 & Series S/X came out from when the PS4 & Xbone came out. That seems to be about the length the Switch will go unless something changes.

I think Nintendo is not going to make a "switch color" like GBC it was litarally was GB with colors its almost the same hardware. I think it will be more like a "switch advance". A switch on steroids but yet a new console and just like the GBA with full backwards compatability but with the same basics from previous console. What do you think of my theory Adam ?
@nathanmielke1977 Жыл бұрын
You're speaking fire bombs of TRUTH! Thank you! Nintendo abandoned the console market after the Wii, there just wasn't enough room for 3 power hungry consoles. Nintendo pivoted and focused on handhelds, the 2017 result was the Switch. And you're correct about the timing about the "new Switch". It'll be another handheld that'll be able to run ported PS4 games, because PS4 games will be 10 years old technology in 2024 with affordable chipsets etc for a portable market.

I'm still in love with the switch for as weak as it is. Whatever the next console is, it NEEDS to be backwards compatible. I'd hate to lose access to the massive switch library in the future.

This was also my idea with the addition of lowering the price and release their older Switch games as Nintendo Selects I want 3DS, Wii and GameCube collections: -Metroid Prime 2 & 3 -Zelda Wind Waker + Twilight Princess HD -Pikmin 1 & 2 -Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 (ports, not emulation) -Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly + Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn -Wario World + Wario Land: Shake It! -Luigi's Mansion 1 & 2 -Excite Truck + Excitebots -Metroid II Samus Returns + Metroid Other M (with real controls!!!) -Mario Sunshine + Mario 3D Land -Smash Bros Melee + Smash Bros Brawl -Mario Kart Double Dash + Mario Kart Wii -Sin & Punishment: Star Successor + Punch-Out!! (Wii) -New Super Mario Bros Wii + New Super Mario Bros 2 -Pokemon Colosseum + Pokemon Gales of Darkness (compatible with GBA Pokemon games on Switch Online) -Last Story + Pandora's Tower -Geist + Eternal Darkness -Zelda Four Swords (DSi port) + Four Swords Adventure -Zelda A Link Between Worlds + Zelda TriFoce Heroes -Kirby Planet Robot + Kirby Triple Deluxe

I would happily buy a Switch ‘box’ similar to the PS Vita TV. So a little box, no screen, bundled with a pro controller, that is made to play at home only. They can make that look like a mini GC or an N64 or whatever to satisfy nostalgia too.

I have grown rather pessimistic towards the Switch over the last year. It‘s lacking any real personality. Most of its games are ports, remakes, remasters or direct sequels. Almost all of the others are Multiplattform titles. What will the Switch be remembered for? Really a sad state the console is in. Feels like a missed chance to do something special. Yet here I am, mainly buying remakes, remasters, ports and sequels on it.

I like what you say here. I looked at the OLED model as the Colour. You are completely right about them wanting to dethrone the PS2. I do think the price is getting a bit hard to stomach at this point.

I think the biggest factor that'll decide when it comes out is when Nvidia next SOC is ready. If they have a new chip that supports DLSS3, is backwards compatible and power efficient it'll be a pretty big jump in specs. The upscaling and image reconstruction will allow games to look pretty good on 4k tv's. The Nvidia Shield with Tegra came out in 2015. They can easily market a new console as another generation.

With the Gamecube is more worthwhile making remasters and HD Ports rather than having a Virtual Console. Period. I have strong bets on not having a Gamecube Virtual console. Plus is exactly when games became complex enough to have to go game by game when making emulators at that point why emulate, you can resell the game as Metroid Prime HD. and it will have an extremely greater range than a virtual console has.

Personally, I’d like them to use the IR camera more, so if they added a sensor bar that could turn the joycon into a wiimote they’d open up a hella amount of ports for point and click or light guns.

Yeah make sense. As a die-hard SEGA fan I would say , Gamecube needs more love and respect . One of The reason I have 2 Wii u in my small collection is because of GameCube's awesome games run natively through HDMI .( There is not much GC systems in our country and I can't even find a OEM controller for my Wii u's GC adaptor to feel THE original feel of the system )

I’m curious if the relative success of the Steam Deck has any effect on them. I know that they’re kind of going after a different audience but just the fact that there is a PS4/Xbox One or even higher power level handheld out there is a curveball I’m not sure if they expected or care about. Would be interesting if they feel any type of way about that over there in their corner.

Remember some old interview, maybe it was mr. Furukawa who mentioned how Nintendo had plans for Switch at least eight years worth of support? It was maybe on 2018 or 2019? Not sure and I cannot find it anymore. For that reason my prediction is that somekind of upgrade might hit shelves march 2025. Maybe similar upgrade that n3ds did compared to the regular 3ds. But to make this thing to work, Nintendo still needs to continue the support all the way. Really hoping that they would have courage to release new games to IPs they haven't done on Switch yet, like Kid Icarus, Wave Race, Star Fox, F-Zero or Pilotwings. The 3rd party support is getting thinner probably, less and less new demanding games that Switch just cannot handle well enough. I am kinda worried if more and more games will release as an cloud version on Switch, that would make consumers vote with their wallets.

Lets not forget the infamous Third Pillar term for the DS. The GBA lasted only 3 years, cause Nintendo desperately needed 3d to compete with the Switch. And honestly, the DS ended up being the definitive 2D handheld console with ok 3D, fixing the bad sound capabilities of the GBA.
