This guy rules , he talks witty fun sense about all the systems .hes fair and totally unbiased against any macine , found him by mistake after looking for old retro reviews and never looked else where since that for the last 3 months.hes brought back the inner 9 year old back into me , so much so ive ordered myself a sega megadrive from amazon a few games,sonic1,2,3 and knuckles ,tiny toons buster breaks out and rocket knight all in all costing me £ 37 for the lot . Keep up the good work man , only a minor gripe but how about a few mins showing the actual games running :-)

Love or hate Playstation you have to admit that at the time they made all the right decisions. Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil, and Metal Gear Solid were some of the most fondly remembered games of that era that made this system what it was. And even today it doesnt feel like there has been a console (besides the dreamcast) that has been able to recapture the magic of the original Playstation.

I love how u remember the convo convincing your mom to buy it, we have all been there. I got her to get me the n64 one Xmas and I was so excited I used to sneak it out at night and play diddy Kong racing all night and then meticulously put in all back in the box before she woke up

The dual analog stick actually werent added first on the dual shock, there was a controller in between the original controller and the dual shock. It was a dual analog controller without vibration in it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_Analog_Controller

The first Playstation was one of my favorite consoles because it was such a technological leap forward in gaming. There really hasn't been another console that blew me away like that since. The only other time I was in awe was the first time I played the NES. That changed me.
@system-error

For me it was technology at first, but later it was artistry of game design. Like my earliest memories of it are of being blown away by the graphics of Tekken and Destruction Derby and Twisted Metal. But then I remember my first ever videogame jump scare in Resident Evil, my first feeling of vertigo looking over a ledge in Tomb Raider. Then later there were games like Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Driver, that were taking the cinematic experience of videogames to a new level. There were so many firsts on that system, the first GTA was amazing too, even though it was 2D and glitchy, just from playing a demo I knew it was going to be huge. Medal of Honor was another great first, we didn't have GoldenEye but MOH made up for it! The one that really got me jealous of the N64 was WCW Vs NWO, there was no brawling game on PlayStation that came close to that. Although there was a quite excellent Wu Tang Clan Kung Fu game. Not to mention awesome unique games like Bushido Blade, Soul Edge. A lot of these games hold up well today too, I played Urban Chaos recently and it's awesome fun, amazing how much they achieved with the technology there. That was almost proto-GTA3 on PS1, like Driver. Developers pushed the PS1 as far as it would go technically and artistically, that's why it stands up so well historically imo.

This was actually my first game console. My Dad bought it some time after I was born and once I matured to the age when I could play games, I got a lot of use out of it. My fondest memories are probably of playing Spyro with my brother and scaring myself with Alien Trilogy. Playstation is really popular here in the UK and I remember wanting to get a PS2 like all my friends. But then I played the Gamecube at a few stores and ended up getting that console instead. In retrospect I'm glad I did since it introduced me to Nintendo and I'd probably be a completely different gamer if I had stuck with Playstation. Great vid as always.

I was 22 when the Playstation came out and I was staying away from it until I had heard enough from friends about it to finally step up and buy one in 96. I really ended up loving all the RPG's, lots of those games are classics and I still enjoy going back to play all the ones I never got around to. It's funny how far we have come since then and when I will play one of these games I always think how old they look already. Old or not it doesn't change how much fun they are or how often I still want to play them.

I love your childhood stories. Mine were similar with the Playstation. We were also at a Toys R' Us and I kept begging for a 32x and my birthday was a week away. (we were shopping for my moms friends kid.) I then saw those demo displays for the Playstation and my head exploded! Blood, Gore, Action, Violence all in 3D!? My birthday rolled around and I was expecting a 32x, When I opened my gift it was a freakin Playstation with Twisted Metal and Rayman. I was like "Mom you outdid yourself this time!"

My Uncle did the same thing with me as a kid. He would always have the newest console and he would give me the old ones. He gave me his Sega Genesis around the time he bought his Playstation. When Playstation 2 came out he gave us his Nintendo 64. I really wanted a Playstation 2 though and we finally got one for Christmas a couple of years after my Uncle had it. I remember him showing me the Xbox 360 and not long after I begged my Mom for one. That was probably the first console we bought not long after the release date.

You make some good ass videos. Around the launch of the PS1 was probably the most exciting in the history of the industry for me. I was more excited for the PS2, but the atmosphere around everything and the unknown was almost magical in the mid 90s. I was like you, where I was a little skeptical of Sony at first. I knew there was a Saturn, I wanted that. I knew about Nintendo and the Ultra 64 that was coming, but I had started turned 13 and their later releases seemed kiddie to me at that age. Super Mario World 2 really put me off with the art style and the crying baby. If they'd have come out at the same time as PS1 though I would have probably gravitated toward them for Mario 64. My dad had bought me a Saturn, but I couldn't have it until my birthday and sometime between then I saw a sales chart in a GamePro magazine and the PS1 was stomping it. This was around March-April 1996. I knew the Saturn was the wrong choice, so I told my dad I changed my mind and he took the Saturn back and swapped it for a PS1. You're right about this being the point where gaming began to lose its innocence and charm, but I don't think it's really Sony's fault. They had a hand in it, but the industry was growing and would become a victim of its own success. Once people saw how much money there was to be made in video games, it was just a matter of time before a giant corporations swooped in like a bunch of dogs fighting for the same bone. It was more of a matter of who and when. Even if Sony stayed out, it would have just been later with somebody else.
@AdamKoralik

Thanks. You make a good point. Though I do wonder who that would have been. Most technology companies had failed to make any kind of headway with consoles. Microsoft only later joined because they didn't like the amount of market share Sony was getting. So, I question who that would have been.

That was a good and informative video. Some memories: This was the first console that I ever bought. Not all of us at the time had parents with disposable incomes, but when I was in junior high I was finally able to buy this. It was also selling at a discounted price by then. I preferred the CD technology, and CD playing use of this console over the N64 and the PS1's line up of games. I don't really like these games now but back then I liked: Tomba, Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3. Syphon Filter (always preferred its action packed gameplay over MGS), Area 51 (arcade shooter w/ light gun), Need for Speed III (very popular back in the day), Bugs Bunny Lost in Time, WWF Warzone (I do not like these cheesefests anymore), and Vigilante 8. As an adult I don't think I'd play almost any PS1 games. In retrospect I should have held off purchasing this and saved my money to buy a bunch of Dreamcast games for the Dreamcast I would get a short while later, that would have been awesome. The Dreamcast totally blew the PS1 out of the water for me. Oh well. The PS1 was still cool though, it had more longevity than I thought.

Then, for the first time, I saw a game on this console in action. I remember it was the first Resident Evil. My jaw fell to the floor as I saw the graphics and the characters spoke using real voices!!! XD Best times in my life.

You have an interesting view on Sony. They basically did what the 3DO tried, and were successful. Hey guys, we'll take care of the hardware, you can make the games. They made it easy to develop for, and everyone else was screwing up. So the developers chose it. They also made it cheap(something the 3DO was not). I myself and so happy Sony got involved. I definitely think it is better. Of coarse, I don't blame them AT ALL for the DLC and incomplete game experience. The PS1 gave us complete games. I blame Gamestop, and the consumer for all this pre-order, chop up games, bull shit. Gamestop always pushing used sale only for a couple bucks cheaper stops the sales for the developers. DLC has become a way to actually make some money of the used games that are bought. Then, the consumers pre-ordering for "bonus" content is responsible as well. I don't think Sony has anything to do with it.

Clesarie Going by which came first isn't always failsafe logic though. I see a lot of Nintendo enthusiasts that think some original Xbox controller design cues were copied from the Gamecube's controller design. But they were released within 2 months of each other and quite frankly, that's not enough time to cover R&D, stress testing, supply etc.

DeadOnArrival45 Okay, I'll give it a go. I didn't say Sony was directly responsible for those things. What I meant was that they set the industry down the path of making those practices acceptable. They took it from niche to corporate. You can see this as a good or a bad thing. Like it or not, they started that. But make sure you know your history here bro. Microsoft, for all the negatives they too have perpetrated on the gaming industry, only entered the console market because they saw Sony taking over living rooms. In other words, if Sony didn't enter or left after the PS1 (which I realize wasn't financially possible), then Microsoft probably would never have had anything to do with it.
@MrGencyExit64
@MrGencyExit64 10 жыл бұрын
AdamKoralik Microsoft did try the crazy WebTV set-top-box in the living room in ~1995. It wasn't completely foreign territory for them, though manufacturing a _successful_ living room device definitely was. I kind of think Microsoft's push into gaming has a lot more to do with SEGA than SONY; they tried to shoehorn the Windows CE operating system into the Dreamcast but weren't quite able to convince SEGA to use Windows CE exclusively. In fact, if the Dreamcast had been more successful Microsoft's involvement in console gaming might very well be limited to providing SEGA with an operating system and more importantly the DirectX API for the Dreamcast 2 :P

My all-time favorite version of the PlayStation 1 is the smaller redesigned PS One. It may not have a reset button, but it comes with a 5-inch LCD screen therefore making your PS One a portable console that you can take with you on the go. In other words, the PS One is a portable game console/CD player that you can take with you on the go. But in order to make it work, you need a car adapter or an AC power adapter in order to make the console work. Plus, the LCD screen has a headphone jack built in the back as well.

Probably my favourite console of all time, i think it is terrific. Sony had some weird choices, but they showed video games to a wider audience, games weren't toys anymore, if you look at the SNES, with it's purple design, it looks like a toy. Gaming actually became cool, with mature games like MGS, Silent Hill, Res. Evil, and older age groups started playing, especially the teens. Of course it was a multimedia-console from the beginning, but so was the CD-i. I think Sony did good to the industry: they made gaming cheaper, more profitable for the studios, and they made consoles that have really long lifespan.

Oh yeah, Adam, that I suppose that it’s only too bad that you otherwise can’t go back and either edit these past Retrospective videos of yours, or re-retrospect them, so that they can also include about other stuff that we all have found about them on the side by now, like those other couple of things that I had let you know about with the XBox 360, and now that I have more or less found out in the meantime about two other things that involve the PSOne and that both of them are also forewarnings to the others around here as well: that first, I didn’t know about this other bit, but apparently there was and is the “Launch Edition” of the console this whole time, and it also has that other power adapter that resembles the one for the XBox 360 and it ends in that simple plug in, and it saves on anyone needing to get an extension cord on the end of that “power brick” to end like that instead, huh; and second, I had already known about this other bit, but someone else in Spawn Wave’s PSOne video’s comments section had confirmed that the console actually doesn’t play all of the PS1 games after all; and so that I guess that that cancels out of me attempting to go with that one console instead of either the PS2 or the PS3, and besides that the PS3 having HDMI meaning that it has digital out originally otherwise, and so much for that bit with me otherwise attempting to get its “ultimate package” with its “ceramic white” DualShock 2 controller, huh :^D. >Danny

The original Playstation holds... A very unique place in my heart. Around the time it was released, it completely blew me away. It was the first non-Nintendo console to truly capture my interest. Being a kid in the early 90's, my first console was an NES despite it no longer being "relevant". I later upgraded accordingly to the SNES, but one of my best friends at the time got a Playstation shortly after it launched. I don't even remember the first game I witnessed being played... But the console itself left an imprint on me. I wanted one. Of course, the following year, I was forced to choose between it and the Nintendo 64 (I chose the latter, which in hindsight, I'm glad for because it was the console that established me as a lifelong, diehard fan of the Big N), so I didn't own one myself until after 2000. Like you, Adam, I cherish the memories the Playstation gave me, though I wonder what the industry would be like today if Sony (or some other electronics company) hadn't managed to rise against Nintendo and Sega. The first Playstation game I played through in its entirety was Chrono Cross, and as my avatar may betray, it remains my all time favorite title on the console to this day. As an aside, it was my favorite JRPG for a while too, but Xenoblade has stolen that title in recent years. :P There were plenty of other amazing games I'd try out eventually, the most memorable ones being Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Solid, and Xenogears, Sadly, the Playstation itself stopped functioning, and after inevitably purchasing a PS2 (again, later in its life cycle), I never saw a reason to replace it as the newer console does everything its predecessor could, and better. The Playstation was a truly remarkable experience and I'd honestly say that it was among the most important, if not THE most important, video game consoles ever. It transformed gaming into something mainstream audiences could appreciate. We could argue all day about whether this ultimately helped or hurt the gaming industry (I see it as the latter, but that's just me), but it's impossible to deny its overall impact.

It cracks me up how he hates the PlayStation for everything Microsoft did first with the Xbox. It was the original Xbox that introduced dlc, patches, and unfinished games being released, not PlayStation or PS2. I don't see you making any videos talking bad about the xbox, though. I just happen to see the huge stack of 360 games behind you in all of your videos. If Sony did "graciously bow out" after the PlayStation, gaming would not be better today. It would be more saturated with DRM and we probably would be in an online only console world right now. I'm sure you'd love that, right? Sony is still supporting and pushing physical media alongside digital. Plus Microsoft would've had their way with the xbone. I'm glad playstation continued. The PS2 was probably the best console generation, and I guarantee it wouldn't have been if it was Gamecube/Xbox only.

You are correct Adam and it make sense too because Sega screw up with the Saturn's launch, most store refused to sell or carry Sega Saturn consoles and games at that time. That may be why you aren't expose to the Saturn or knew of its existence cause a lot of the bigger stores at that time just refuse to carry them. At the time I know about the Saturn and had seen one or two people who own one but I could never find one at a local retailer giant like Walmart or Target. It was just that rare to see one at the time and by the time I know it the Saturn was already on its out.

I've hears that before, the console costs more to build than what they sold it for, and I gotta tell you, I just don't buy it. These are BILLION dollar companies we are talking about, they didn't make that much money by giving things away. Maybe the first couple of units were that expensive, but once mass production is up and running? Yeah, no. I know some of you are going to argue with me, point me to figures published by said companies that PROVE this. Yeah, all lies IMO. Why would they lie? TO get you and me to buy the consoles and games at the prices they want us to pay of course! "Look how much money we are losing on the console, we CANT sell the games for less than that!" Yeah, just not buying it.

i would argue on Microsoft not being a game company, they weren't when they launched but they quickly built up Microsoft studios(yes they have a lot of outsourcing of devs, but even ea, Activision and, ubisoft do that) they have there own ip, forza, fable, halo, gears of war, age of empire, crackdown,minecraft,perfect dark, battletoads(yeah they basically bought all of rare minus Nintendos ip) on and on and on, what makes a game company if running a studio and owning ip doesn't?

Thanks for sharing your story. I think it really captures that time when parents would usually only buy 1 console for their kid and then you had to stick with it. And yes, parents really did ask which of your friends has what console. :D This fueled those SEGA vs. Nintendo debates. And for the PS, I love that system; I sunk so many hours into RPGs on it. I would love going home from school just to play video games. Simpler times. BTW, a device is currently being made for the I/O port that will have an SD that will let you play backed up games off the SD card. Will post a link when I get home.

I think the PS1 had a major influence in maturing videogames (alongside PC gaming ). Games weren't targeted for kids anymore, censorship was at its low, new genres were created, playability was changed (especially with dual analogs) and games were kept cheap, developers could have more profit and they could have more liberty creating games. If it was kept Sega Vs Nintendo again, gaming would be very different nowadays, probably worse. Sega would keep making more arcade games, western audiences would have been kept out of rpgs and we'd get less games. Nintendo would have kept a bigger share and they'd still be targeting kids (they still are, but way less than before), games would be more expensive, censored, less developers cause Nintendo would stick to their "we want more money out of developers", developers would be cut off if they didn't develop exclusively for Nintendo, it'd be the NES times all over again. Buisness-wise Nintendo were a bunch of pricks (and they still are). The PS1 broke the market and in the end the consumers mostly won. I think games would be taking the path of Dlcs sooner or later, don't think of it as Sony's fault, it' is cause by the rising gaming costs, they would happen anyways even if Sony wasn't there. People are very fanboyish about Sega and Nintendo, they can argue all they want, Ps1, Ps2, Ps3, Psp and Ps4 take the cake for me cause of one reason only: the amount of games they have. More games, more fun for us, that's about it. But I love all consoles as long as they have great games - in the end it's the player that's willing to invest in them and its respective games that wins.

Although I don't like the current state of gaming, I don't think it's totally Sonys fault. It more the times and technology. With digital downloads, streaming and whatnot. Sony isn't really to blame for that. The og xbox had dlc and game patches, if anything its more Microsoft to blame for that. PS2 had online capability, but no games I can think of utilized it for dlc of patches.

PS1 is my fav console of all time. I used to play games on a sort of arcade kinda place (couldn't own one), but instead of arcade machines, they had the systems connected to a TV and you pay $0.25 per half hour of play. Remember playing SNES and loving it, but one day I get there and there's two PS's and my jaw dropped on the floor on how amazing the games looked. The game that really blew my mind was Resident Evil, if felt so real going from room to room, the moment you step outside you could hear crickets and dogs howling in the distance, when walking on the mansion, your footsteps had different sounds from walking/running on concrete to carpets to wooden floors, it was so immersive, it really felt like you were on the shoes of Jill and Chris. I was so impressed with that game that to this date still my fav RE game. Adam, I suggest you check it out The Lost World: Jurassic Park and ESPN Xtreme (a.k.a. 1Xtreme) for PS1, two games that no one talks but it really fun.

I just graduated from high school in 2000 and the college that was going to had a summer program to get high school graduates indoctrinated to college. At the end of the program every participant got a check for $800 dollars. Great video. This is my favorite console of all time, though I do agree that it's not perfect. I don't necessarily agree with it being a bad influence for gaming, I think it's more about how technology progressed through the years that led us to where we are right now. I think that it's actually pretty awesome that Sony, as a newcomer to the gaming industry, managed not only to fight Nintendo and Sega on equal grounds, but beat them both to dominate the 5th and 6th generations. I remember being very little I knew very little about the PS1, I mostly played in an NES knockoff they sell in my country (they still do, believe it or not) and sometimes in an SNES at a friend's house. My mom was the one who knew it was a "big thing" and bought it for me. My model was the PS one, I probably got it around 2000 and wow, just wow. I had the fortune of enjoying so many great games from an already excellent library. I can only wonder if I'll ever love a console for it's exclusives as much as I love the PS1.

I don’t know why other people bought the PlayStation but I know why I did. Nintendo were still in their ‘No/little blood’ phase and I was becoming an adult so I wanted to play adult games + rightly or wrongly cartridges seemed old hat. Sega ( and I love them) had appeared to dropped the Sega CD and 32X leaving people out of pocket, I wasn’t prepared to take the risk again. Sony aimed their console at young adults with cash in their back pockets, arcade ports , blood etc. they demonstrated it in night clubs and made gaming cool for young adults. There was no need to hide your like of games anymore. I am so enjoying your videos ! I have only just found them but retro gaming never gets old and you have such knowledge and passion !!!

Saturn was more powerful, but most developers, especially early on, didn't know how to work with so many different processors. They had the same amount of RAM, but the Saturn had more VRAM and you could upgrade RAM easily with a RAM cart, giving the Saturn 3X the RAM of the PS1. Mostly, the PS1 had a simple design and was easy to program for.

I've gotta say, despite my memories with the PlayStation and all the happiness it brought me (and still does) back when I was young, I never once thought too hard, if at all, about the impact that Sony left on the gaming industry. Once again Adam, you've opened my eyes by casting light on Sony and how they've single-handedly changed things but not necessarily for the better. Although it may be obvious to me now that you mention it (not to say I wasn't aware or anything), I think it's definitely important to remember what you said, about how Sony merely *funds* their games by either buying the studios that make their games or, at the very least, buys the rights to exclusivity of games for their consoles. Now, I'm not saying that I don't have my _own_ opinions to bring to the table here but I feel that they wouldn't be worth bringing up. There's something about _your_ opinions however, that really stick to me whenever I watch your videos. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that you always seem to do your research first. I'm sure you've received ample angry feedback by those who are very close-minded about their feelings regarding the original PlayStation, or really, ANY Sony console for that matter, it's pretty shameful but at the same time, all too expected. Well anyway Adam, you're doing a great job with this look back at previous gaming generations, I'm really enjoying your opinions on them, just thought I'd say that.
