I got a Sega Saturn for Christmas in 1995 when I was 11. My parents got it for me because I absolutely loved my Sega Genesis and even had a 32X. That was, hands down, the best Christmas ever. It came with 3 games (Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter and Virtua Cop). I eventually got Tomb Raider, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Street Fighter Alpha 3, a DarkStalkers game, and of course NiGHTS into Dreams with the bundled analog pad. I always wanted to get Shining Force III since I was a massive Shining Force I and II fan, but could never find it. I eventually moved on to the Sony PlayStation once support for the Saturn started dwindling, but the Saturn will always hold a very special place in my heart. I certainly wish I still had mine.

Why don't you buy another one? You can pick them up relatively cheap, and you never...ever know what someone has at a garage sale, you could possibly pick up panzer dragoon saga or any of them for 50 cents. I will probably get a Saturn soon, and just import the games. I've actually been thinking about moving to Japan so I may even just wait until that happens ( pipe dream ) but, you never know :)

Interesting that there was so little exposure to the Saturn in the US. It certainly wasn’t a big hit over here in the UK, but everyone was definitely aware of it (mostly as the butt of jokes). I actually knew a few people who owned one, but their interest slowly petered out when it became obvious how much it struggled with 3D games. By the time the N64 came out, the Saturn was pretty much irrelevant and most people had switched to PlayStation. It had potential, but in the end it's just another example of Sega reacting to last-generation problems instead of planning ahead.

I was 18 when the Saturn launched. Bought a Japanese import machine on day 1 back in November '94. Great memories of that system, I stood by it till the bitter end and then picked up a DC on day one also. Boy do I feel old! Never bought a Sony console until 2001, I was definitely a SEGA/Nintendo fanboy back in the day.

The Saturn is an awesome console with tons of great games. Sega management in Japan should have listened more to Kalinski in America. I've still got my launch Saturn, modded to play Japanese games with 70 games. it's my most beloved console, just ahead of my Dreamcast and Jaguar. I was at the Sega conference at E3 95 when they sprung the news. Our jaws dropped. It was megaton level shit. Love these videos, great work.

Take what Kalinske and other SOA executives say with a grain of salt, because most people have only ever heard of their accounts and not what the Japanese side has to say. There's likely some bias and blame shifting going on; them not wanting to be responisble for their console business going under.

Nintendo still being around makes it vastly more bearable that Sega don't make their own machines any more. Here's hoping that the Shenmue 3 kickstarter works out...

Thanks for the video, it was well put together and researched. It's interesting hearing the perspective of someone that wasn't aware of the Saturn during the era. It had a strong presence in that generation here in Australia (even if it didn't sell comparatively well to its competitors) and it was very visible to the average gamer of the period. The implication that modern gamers define that era with just the N64 and PS1 is a genuine shame as it has no merit or factual basis. The Saturn was one of the highlights of that generation despite complete mismanagement by Sega at the time. Thanks again for the video & hopefully some more people discover what a great console the Saturn is as a result. Keep up the good work!

In the summer of 95 when I walked into a store and saw Virtua Fighter in motion I bought a Saturn on the spot. Just in the first few months with VF, Panzer Dragoon, Daytona and Virtua Cop I was very happy with the system. It's hard to understate how amazing these games were compared to the 16-bit games we were used to. Eventually when Sega stopped supporting it and PS1 hit $100 I moved elsewhere. Still the Saturn was great for its time.

Very underrated system and in ways I liked it more then the Dreamcast honeslty. I liked its games and controllers more, the system had better hardware and reliability. Its super easy to play import games with the cart, the game library is really good if you get the imports and there box's where way better. Games I had where about 45 in total. I loved nights into dreams, panzar dragoon 1 2 saga, shinning force 3, shinning the Holy ark, guardian heroes, fighters mega ix, sonic jam, virtua cop 2, virtual on, etc. It was also really good for 2D fighters also. Great system in my opinion

If the PS1 wasn't made and the N64 and Saturn still ended up in their present form, the highest chance is that FF7 would've actually been made for the PC, or maybe even an earlier released Xbox. One thing to keep in mind is that the N64 was the most powerful console graphically of the 5th gen, yet the PS1 does have hardware that can easily mimick what the N64 can do graphically, which helped give the PS1 it's edge. The Saturn did not have that, and was actually closer in graphical terms to the SNES than it was to the N64. What gave the PS1 it's edge was it was a Win-Win console, it was graphically powerful and used CDs. The N64 and Saturn were Win-Lose. The N64 was graphically powerful but used cartridges, and the Saturn used CDs but was graphically weak. So had the PS1 never been made and the N64 and Saturn ended up in their present form, many developers would've most likely been disgusted with the Win-Lose specs of both consoles and would've jumped ship to PCs, and/or Microsoft would've entered the console race with the Xbox in around 1997 instead of 2001 as it would be the perfect time to strike with Nintendo and Sega both in the mud.

The XBox wouldn't have come out earlier. In fact, if the Playstation never existed, it's doubtful Microsoft would have even bothered making the Xbox, as the entire thing from helping Sega to release, and even to this day was a knee jerk reaction by an upset Bill Gates at the rejection of DirectX on the PS2. Bill Gates was a genius, albiet a vengeful genius, and good God can the man hold a grudge. Hell, he even named the Xbox Project Midway.

Captain Blackey, that is just nonsense, the Saturn was at a technical level, more powerful than the playstation, it had 2 32 bit risk cpu's vs. playstation's 1, it had 2 display processors vs. playstation's 1, it also had twice the ram with 4 meg in total, 2 meg for the system, 1 meg for video and 1 meg for audio, the playstation only had 2 meg, 1 for system, 512 k each for video and ram, the Saturn was just notoriously difficult to program for and Sega was stupidly slow at releasing it's development tools for it.

I had a co-worker who got the Saturn and PlayStation on release day. I had the opportunity to go to his home and demonstrate how much I sucked at games. I remember playing Virtua Fighter 2, and he told me I jumped too much. I was just pushing the D-pad (or whatever Sega called it) in all directions like I did with Street Fighter II Turbo on SNES. That advice has helped me more now. For some reason, being in my 40s and returning to video games has made me much better. Now I only half-suck.

Wow, I distinctly remember when the Saturn came out and remember the rivalry between it and Sony's Playstation, and later, the N64. It was sad to see it die the way it did because it had really cool games, and the fact that all those 2D fighting games looked and ran better on it made it something worth having over a Playstation, despite being a Playstation fan. I do remember the (awesome!) 3-game bundle with the system for $199 (Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona USA, and Virtua Cop), and I think it even dropped to $169 at one point, which was nuts. I was in my early teens at the time, so I still have fond memories of the system and the times I shared with it and my friends. It sucks to know this system and the Dreamcast shared the same fate despite being great game consoles with a wonderful lineup of games with gems galore.

My other favorite was the blast processing one, where the commercial guy said "The Genesis has blast processing, the Super Nintendo does not. What does blast processing do? Excellent video. For anyone who is considering getting a Saturn and is a fan of 2D fighting games, this is the console to get. 2D games look and play best on the Saturn with a ram cart, and many of the Japanese versions can be had at very reasonable prices. If you take into consideration import games, the Saturn library is actually quite diverse and substantial. Hell, the few RPGs available on the Saturn are also quite good...but also expensive. The console is also very durable. Shame SEGA handled this console like it did.

Sonic Jam wasn’t made by the division in Sega who was working on Sonic Xtreme, in fact it wasn’t even made during its production, what happened was after Xtreme was cancelled Sega had brought in Sonic Team to make another sonic game for Saturn. They had worked on it during 1997, and the game would go on to become Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast, the beta elements of which were added to Sonic Jam, before the Sonic Team went and made big changes to the design of the game.

How old are you Adam? That surprises the hell out of me that you had never heard of the Saturn until the Dreamcast days. I always considered it a 3 horse race between 64, Saturn and PS. I never cared about sales so back hen i was a kid, they were all equal is far as i knew

I've been wanting to buy a Saturn for a few years but have held off mainly because of money issues specific to that console, but if the Everdrive ever proves to be possible for the Saturn and is indeed capable of running ISOs from a cartridge, I'm gonna really consider buying a Saturn.

I remember seeing Saturn in the store displays and playing Knights. I knew maybe two people that had one. But I was blown away when I saw knights. I was like wow a true 3D adventure game with really cool flight controls! It pails in comparison to Mario 64 but this was a full 2 months before the 64 release, but I also remember playing the 64 for the first time in toy r us like in August or something and was quickly floored by not only the 3D capabilities but that Mario had moves! You could crawl, jump, back flip, run, tip toe, fly! Also Knights had a joystick before the N64 came out that was cool, I was totally confused by the N64 controller when I saw it at Toys R Us but a kid stood next to me and showed me here grab the middle nub and right side thats how you hold it, and I was like wow thats different but I like it. I was like 12 at the time and had just lived through basically the 2d generation I saw all this stuff coming out and I was like THIS IS NEXT GEN! Something I haven't felt since sadly but I mostly do serious gaming on PC now.

I had a Sega Saturn almost my whole life. I got it second hand, with only the 3D controller with it and the video cable. It had a VCD card in the back since we got it, and we actually used it lots for VCD movies. I remember getting a big pile of saturn discs, and I played the system to death xD I think I over used it, because now the laser stopped working right. Now most games will get to the SEGA logo or the menu, but that was it. VCDs still play but every 2 frames it looks like it shows picture from 5 frames ago, and the audio is stuttery. I can't wait for that doctor abrasive loader or a everdrive, because I loved the Saturn, I'd love to play it again. :)

Actually I think you forgot about the PS1's parallel port - it is too a direct access to the motherboard and there are cartridges for it, such as PSIO if you've ever heard of it. If not, it's an SD card add on just like the Everdrive (or maybe even better).

This is my 1st 5th-gen console. I got it late for cheap, used. I was disappojnted Sega did not suceed or at least do somewhat better than they did outside of Japan. I wonder where I can find a list of US Saturn releases by date/year, as I am wondering about exactly how many games came out in the US for the Saturn in 1997 & 1998 besides Magic Knight Rayearth (1998-09-14). Something else that would be interesting would be to find out which multi-platform games had Saturn releases. I know my fav racer Wipeout had a Saturn release including the 2nd game (outside the USA).

Great Video Adam! Quick question for you. I am just starting to collect both Dreamcast and Saturn, as I too feel that I did not give it the chance it needed. With the Sega Saturn, are the Japanese controllers playable on the US version of the console? Wanted to ask someone who has probably used more than one controller for this system. Thanks and keep up the great work!!

No one knew about it?? I remember going on weekends to my local Funcoland in 1995 and seeing upfront the PlayStation on one side and the Saturn on the other. We would line up to play Daytona USA on it, and to marvel at the graphics in Panzer Dragoon (lol). Then I would go to the back and play Samurai Showdown on the 3DO. Those were the 2 consoles I would have loved to own as a kid. Looking back I’m glad I didn’t get them in the end

They shouldn't have added the second processor, they should have upgraded the main processor instead before launch. The Jaguar was proof that most people didn't know at that time how to program for 2 chips like that.

$400 for the Saturn in 1995!! Wow! Expensive. It's still hard for me to believe that the Playstation was actually released in the U.S. in 1995. Wow. 20 years ago. When I got my Playstation in 1998 I never would've guessed it had been out for three years already. The thing had been refined by that time it had the DualShock controller, better games at that time with better graphics Gran Turismo, Spyro the Dragon, Metal Gear Solid etc.

I loved my Saturn. Virtua fighter 2 Daytona u.s.a and virtua cop were good enough for me to get the console and those three games often came with it. Panzer dragon saga was almost impossible to find really. The best game on Saturn I think is shining force 3. I was so pissed when they didn't release episode 2 and 3 . It seems shining force 4 will never happen ?

Arrg! Just spent 10 minutes typing out a comment only for the page to freeze and refresh. My main points were; I feel a bit of regret about not supporting the Saturn too but to be fair its Sega's fault for botching up the launch, pissing off developers, pricing being way too high, marketing being way too obscure, no killer app launch title. Most of these lessons I think were learnt and the launch of the Dreamcast was definitely a success, if you want one reason the Dreamcast died off you can put it down to a lack of a DVD player (ironically nothing to do with the games). The fact that the Saturn did so well in Japan as well shows that it could (and arguably should) have done as well worldwide if not for the above mistakes. Still, it is a great console that did not do as well as it should have, I really recommend Beyond Oasis (a sequel to an Action RPG on the mega drive)

Adam, I've watched this video (and pretty much all of your others) and something always stuck with me. You said the Everdrive was technically possible thanks to direct motherboard connections, and has worked in isolated cases. Using this same logic, in theory, using a boot disc (or some other workaround like that) you could get it to run games from the cartridge port. Does this mean theoretically one could make some kind of pin adapter or converter to allow the Saturn to run other similarly archetyped cartridge based consoles? Namely it's predecessor's, 32x and Genesis, or are they just too different? It seems like it's similar enough (just from playing games released on the CD/Genesis/32x vs versions released on the Saturn, which by no means am I a hardware expert) to possibly warrant further investigation. due to the dual-CPUs and all the other odds and ends that made the Saturn odd I wasn't sure how feasible it was, and internet searches proved frivolous, so I would appreciate your thoughts on it.
