I know a gentleman who built exhausts for Benetton F1 back in their Schumacher era and now works for Ligier. He said, only ceramic coat the inside of the exhaust. You want to reflect that heat out of the header itself. Not coat it on the outside and trap the heat in the pipe. The more you know.

You want to trap the heat in the header so you’re not raising the temp under the hood. That would increase intake air temps and melt wires. I can see f1 cars being different if they’re designed to keep the exhaust away from components you need to keep cool.

Next header from scratch! Rotary specific requirements. 26:23 26:23 1) 2" diameter ID with 3" minimum straight section out of port. Few and gradual bends as possible (no bundle of snakes.) 2) P-port- short header 10--18". Long header 89-94". No medium header! 3) collector minor diameter 115% larger than runner (2.3"). Larger diam the further from equal length the runners are (overlapping pulses) 4) megaphone to 3-4" diam (on 2 rotor- so bigger 4 rotor?) 10-15" long (slow divergence). Even more gradual convergence if needed. 5) larger diameter exhaust can run richer afrs for better scavenging (post collector expansion) try full 4" at least. Tuning. Smooth idle with p-port very low timing idle map and no split timing or negative split. However aggressive timing at no/low load for quick rev-up. Cold (ngk 11 or 12) plugs! The rotary specific race plugs add power. For power , small shower position 2ndary injectors for dense air charge (especually if you have undersize TB). Awesome progress!

@@johnkpjmPackafing. For short headers Adam would have to turn his engins spark plugs down like in aviation and wrap the headers down the side of the engine. So, I think the long headers would be the easier. Easier to fit, easier to match lengths with longbradius shallow bends.

You’re 2/3 the way to the sound you want. First is equal length tubing to be able to reliably predict/control your exhaust pulses. Next is firing order to control/direct the timing of those pulses hitting collector. Final is stepped headers to disperse the velocity of those exhaust pulses. Looking forward to the vid where you put all 3 into practice and get that screaming 4rotor sound. 👍🏽

A classic rotary trick for the big flame shooters, is to replace the packing materials in mufflers with lava rocks because they’ll withstand the heat, and porous enough to absorb sound. Acoustically speaking, my guess about your exhaust system to sound like f1 is: - Stepped Headers 3 mm increase each step (this is not that necessary considering that rotary engines normally produces twice the frequencies than a common 4 stroke engine) - Circular/rotational firing order at the merge collector - 30° up to 45° V angle for merge collector for more sound deflection points (for performance this angle must be up to 15°) - Thinner pipe walls (for more resonance) - 304 Stainless steel or other material with reasonable hardness ("soft" materials like mild steel muffle the sound) - Not too large diameter throughout the full system except for tail pipe (large diameter enhances loudness but tends to accentuate the lower frequencies) - Not too long piping too (the shorter the pipes, higher will be the pitch of the exhaust) It's more about managing shockwaves than any other thing

The heat out of a rotary is crazy. I made a repackable muffler for my rx7 for this reason. The end tip changed color after a couple of laps on the track. Your end tip might be a bit short for the amount of flames it shoots though
@zephhattan80088 күн бұрын
I think this only really had an effect because the "merge collector" design was basically missing the merge portion in the first place. You effectively were mostly dumping sound waves into an expansion/echo chamber asymmetrically, and as you point out in the video when this is with 4-1, that also introduces a sequential difference in the relative spatial relationship of the pulses. Fixing the order so that the relationship between each sequntial pulse remains the same is one way to address that but really only addresses half of the problem...but it wouldn't have been necessary, or made any difference if they actually merged symmetrically to the centerline in the first place. With 4-1 there is always going to be a bit of asymmetry in that relationship between individual runners unless you are merging clear down to the same ID as the individual runners. Which is ok in a 3-1 since there is usually no event overlap, but would no doubt probably cost some power at least some places in the powerband in a 4-1. I think you're also rationalizing the whole 2.5" path length difference by it being a small percentage of the total length...but I should point out it represents the same difference in sound wave timing whether it's 100% of the runner length or .00000001%. I think you would have a smoother sounding result if the runners were exact equal path length. 2.5" is not negligible. If your EGTs are say 600 degrees F, those sound waves are traveling 1595.4 feet per second, or 19,132.8 inches per second. So that 2.5" difference takes 19132.8/2.5= 1/7653.12 of a second, or 0.13 milliseconds. Which doesn't sound like much and in fact even at high RPMs may only be a 10% offset in events relative to the total exhaust duration but most of the exhaust noise is generated over a much, much shorter duration when that path first opens, so the delay likely produces a much larger percentage shift than implied. But in the context of human hearing, even .13 milliseconds is ~7,700hz. Well within the range of what we can detect so I suspect the timing difference does dirty up the perceived exhaust note in terms of less smoothness due to the inconsistent intervals in timing, as well as in rapid fluctuations in perceived volume due to the different event overlap it generates, no matter how small. If those path lengths aren't identical, their interaction will always change as engine operating conditions change. The higher frequency you get to the less we can probably detect it, but arguably the more it actually matters since the offset becomes a higher and higher percentage of the exhaust event duration. I don't think you've solved the puzzle as a whole, or introduced adequate frequency multiplication techniques to really achieve the aound you are after...but you did identify and address one major flaw/obstacle. Would look forward to seeing this replicated with exact equal lengths, as well as the effect of creating some frequency multiplication with stepped primaries, or dead-end branches as resonators on the primaries to split the sound and purposely create an echo/delay (but those will need to be equal length and at equal location as well, or you run into the same changing timing differences/asymmetry as well).

For more reference on how these dynos read, last year I had a LS3/6L80E car on a Mainline ProHub. The car was factory rated at 415hp. Stock it made 335hp, with just a tune 350hp, and then intake/headers/tune 405hp. 490hp on a Mainline is strong!

Mike congrats on the journey of quitting. I myself have quit too. I’m almost one year free! Keep going!
