It's amazing how many people go onto the BBC articles with HYS sections and bragging about not paying their TV Licence because they don't use any BBC services. They go onto a website funded by the TVL to say they don't use anything funded by the TVL.

I haven’t paid the license fee in about 5 or 6 years. Personally I’d be more inclined to pay if they introduced a cheap monthly membership that just covered iplayer. The merger could be an interesting idea, but whether or not the BBC are ready for it is another matter. The mention of AI being used to write transcripts for programmes has already gotten me wary about the company's future (and OTHER companies actively trying to push AI into the public conscience). I wish we could go back to the days when we had actual writers doing that stuff without AI input, like we currently do.

The way that people consume media has changed massively over the last couple of decades, and the internet has ushered in new brands in production and distribution. Even without the rising tide of political antipathy, from the right in particular, the BBC's funding model would be facing scrutiny, and it's hard to see how it can survive without some fairly radical changes. As audiences of fragmented, the affection in which it is held by the public seems to have waned significantly. The Savile scandal, the fall from grace of other celebrity presenters such as Huw Edwards, hysteria over salaries for talent, accusations of wokeness, and many other travails have increasingly brought the Corporation into disrepute, though not always fairly, in my opinion (it's become a sort of voodoo doll for the noisy old gits who watch GB news, egged on by the likes of Nigel Farage and Lord Rees of Mogg, who have brought a new meaning to Grandstand over the last few years). Such attacks, successive rounds of licence freezes, and the shame associated with some of the scandals seem to have knocked the confidence of many in the BBC, and it seems much less assured in its programming and journalism. I am of an age that I have considerable nostalgia for what might be regarded as a golden age of British TV in the 70s and 80s. However I also think its important to recognize that for 70 years or so, the BBC was Britain's most important cultural organization, and as a model of public service broadcasting it was respected, admired and envied around the world. Across its tv channels and regional studios, national and local radio stations, and ventures into film production and other activities, it produced an enormous range of output, adhering to high editorial standards. It balanced popular programming with an enormous variety of minority interests, and it was training ground and showcase for writers, actors, journalists, documentarians, and a whole range of production staff, musicians, orchestras, etc., that would go on to work for channels, in the film industry, and internationally. Britain's strength in expirting cultural products has been sustained in one way or another by the BBC. People have always whinged about the licence fee, but the BBC produced and suppirte all the things that it did for really not very much money at all. It's still less than £18 a month, which is the cost of Netflix Ultra HD. And if you want to see a show on Amazoon, and something else on Disney, and alm the other streaming platforms, then the costs really staet to rack up. Of course if people dont watch free to air tv channels, they shouldn't be obliged to pay for them, except there are doubtless a lot of freeloaders. Consumers have become very transactional and they only want to pay for the things they consume. Some of them only want to hear information that suits with their world view, and rage at any covdrage being given to politicians or issues they don't like. But I've been watching a lot of US news recently, because of the election, and I'm often shocked by the obvious political bias of 'news' programmes one way or the other, the shameless librrties that are taken with facts on channels like Fox, and the much more deferential style of political interviewers who often elicit answers from politicians (and one in particular) that are obviously at odds with the facts and yet go unchallenged. They don't have a Robin Day, a Paxman, or an Emily Maitliss. Those journalits epitomised BBC news and current affairs programming, though I'm not sure they have an obvious successor. But I'm very much in favour of journalists, and clear editorial standards to which they are held accountable. I dont want British news organizations to become imitations of US Media. I'm rambling a bit, but in essence I'm saying that the BBC did a lot of things to a very high standard, for relatively little cost; it has been an internationally renowned cultutal and journalistic institution; it has set a standard for other British media organisations: and it adds value to Britain's cultural industries far beyond its own output. Its Charter, which requires it to inform, educate and entertain, also ensures editorial independence from the Givernment (often to the chagrin of those in power), and its freedom from the demands of advertisers gives it the freedom to develop programming for which the audience might be quite small. It also ensures that major national and sporting events are not put behind an pay per view paywall. These are just some of the things that the BBC does, which may taken granted but would be missed if they ceased, undermining the strength and distinctiveness of British culture.

The merger needs to happen quite frankly, especially when the Streaming Age has really screwed the Traditional Broadcasters and has increased the amount of competition they face. Most of all from the likes of Netflix, Prime Video & Disney+. I also feel that the licence fee also needs to apply to people with Broadband Connections and/or Phone Contracts.
@itskdog
@itskdog 4 ай бұрын
It does - if you're watching anything on iPlayer or watching any live TV from another broadcaster, you need a license. Not entirely sure how Channel 4 enforced that with the Paralympics when they streamed on KZbin, or Sky News with their 24/7 KZbin stream.
@MrSmith1984
@MrSmith1984 4 ай бұрын
@@itskdog I'm not talking about the apparent requirement for a Licence Fee to use BBC iPlayer. I'm talking about introducing a requirement to have a Licence Fee before one is permitted to purchase a Broadband or Mobile Phone service of any kind in Britain. Even if one has zero intention of using BBC iPlayer at all. I would also point out that Channel 4 doesn't actually ask if you have a Licence Fee in relation to using its Streaming Service, probably because it doesn't really receive anything from it. Which in turn explains why it didn't ask anything about having a Licence Fee in relation to their Paralympics Coverage on KZbin. As for Sky News, well they are not a PSB of any kind and thus they don't receive any Licence Fee money at all. The free stream on KZbin is probably because of Sky's long held policy of treating Sky News as a loss leader, hence why it's long been on Freeview as well.

@@davepubliday6410 Yes, I guess it depends what systems they had in place for that though and how someone could prove their residency. @jayrogers8255 to be honest I can't see that working here on several levels. Firstly, we are not used to broadcasters "holding out the begging bowl" in that way. Secondly, I think most people would say "I've already paid once (either via government funding - taxation or the licence fee (also a tax) so why should I pay twice" Thirdly, many would say that BBC is not what it once was (especially in the 70s-90s) so not worth it then. Fourthly, half the population see it with a left wing bias and half the nation see it having a right wing bias, or as an organisation that wants to tick boxes rather than employ the best for the job, so "why should I pay when they don't represent me/Britain"etc. It's really not comparable to PBS I think and just wouldn't work here

But as a regular listener, time and time again you can't help but hear how important it is around the world to people whose local media is so in the pocket of the government or vested interests, it's unusable. Or deadly. We owe it to the world to keep this generally impartial supply of information going and going strong. The Foreign Office should at least contribute again. I don't see why a return to the rather grown up and admired pay for it all yet have no editorial control way of funding shouldn't happen.

In a way I can understand it because Channel 4 aims much of it's content at a much younger audience than the BBC. The thing is Channel 4 would probably lose much of its identity and have much of it's own content probably change to fit some kind of BBC standard. Channel 4 does actually still produce a lot of semi decent comedy and panel shows as well had having a fairly decent chunk of American shows that are at least worth one watch. I just can't see a deal like this benefiting anyone but the BBC and to try and say they now have all of Channel 4's content on the iPlayer now so a TV license is now more than worth it or something along those lines.

Kids tv will be on it between 4-6pm. And programs such as gardeners world can be moved to an afternoon slot. And as majority of the public have iPlayer most programmes will be watched when you want to watch them. But if you still record programmes at least they will still be on live tv at some point. Instead of constant daytime repeats.

I think some BBC programmes have been shown on Channel 4 -it’s actually not uncommon to find BBC programmes on the Welsh channel S4C - all the Welsh language programmes moved to S4C, allowing both BBC Wales and HTV Wales to broadcast exclusively in English - if you want to watch programmes in Welsh in Wales, tune to S4C!
@kynastonp
@kynastonp 5 ай бұрын
S4C is partially funded by the licence fee , their news programmes are made by BBC WALES. Their main soap is made by the BBC and as of 2020 their programmes are broadcast from the BBC building in central cardiff .

I can see good & bad with this, More 4 stuff will be daytime stuff, E4 stuff will be bbc three stuff & channel 4 news investigation team would do good as well as some fresh blood. It would likely see tv license going anyway. It’s a matter of when not if. I see free ad tier, premium tier with no ads. Radios station would get ads only on Alexa if it’s premium. If it’s means not waiting for years or months with e4 drunk tv line up with popular shows on late at nights like 1.00am. I’m for it as I would would have during football season to listen to my team then cancelled it. Unless they sports pass like now have. I would actually close both kids on satellite tv then relaunch as bbc kids with content from both cbbc & cbbrcbies. I would remove it off virgin as well as well but keep it on freeley but not on freeview. it would still be on player. I would reduce radio stations 1 extra, 4 extra, 5 live sports extra, and Asian network with bbc R1 & 2 on R1, R3 & 4 Content on R2, Radio 5 on radio 3 & radio 6 music goes on R1 as well. Asian network stuff goes on world servers radio. Cut local bbc in sub regions to North, Mids & South. Liverpool & above its mid under Liverpool & above Gloucestershire & below is south. Close bbc radio Gibraltar.

Purely speculation on my part but I think what may happen is that BBC1 and 2 stay on linear television and all the rest will move online. As for Radio, I can see Radios 1,2 and 3 staying pretty much as they are with some kind of merger between Radios4 and 5Live taking place 1 Xtra could become podcasts along with 6 Music, 4 Extra I can see being closed altogether and As for BBC Local and Nations radio, think that will go the same way as as commercial local radio with news from local BBC TV news rooms this cutting out many Local Radio news rooms meaning complete closure of some stations. It’ll be interesting to see what does actually happen. Maybe the discussion with Channel 4 is to see how a partial move towards advertising on the BBC could work. Just a guess.

As long as they don't interfere too much. BBC's standards of journalism are dire, whereas Channel 4's are good. There is also the matter of sport, where successive issues with both broadcasters (but much more so the BBC) have caused multiple sports to scale back, or indeed leave entirely, free to air television: Formula 1, Formula E and the Olympics to give just three examples
