The way that people consume media has changed massively over the last couple of decades, and the internet has ushered in new brands in production and distribution. Even without the rising tide of political antipathy, from the right in particular, the BBC's funding model would be facing scrutiny, and it's hard to see how it can survive without some fairly radical changes. As audiences of fragmented, the affection in which it is held by the public seems to have waned significantly. The Savile scandal, the fall from grace of other celebrity presenters such as Huw Edwards, hysteria over salaries for talent, accusations of wokeness, and many other travails have increasingly brought the Corporation into disrepute, though not always fairly, in my opinion (it's become a sort of voodoo doll for the noisy old gits who watch GB news, egged on by the likes of Nigel Farage and Lord Rees of Mogg, who have brought a new meaning to Grandstand over the last few years). Such attacks, successive rounds of licence freezes, and the shame associated with some of the scandals seem to have knocked the confidence of many in the BBC, and it seems much less assured in its programming and journalism. I am of an age that I have considerable nostalgia for what might be regarded as a golden age of British TV in the 70s and 80s. However I also think its important to recognize that for 70 years or so, the BBC was Britain's most important cultural organization, and as a model of public service broadcasting it was respected, admired and envied around the world. Across its tv channels and regional studios, national and local radio stations, and ventures into film production and other activities, it produced an enormous range of output, adhering to high editorial standards. It balanced popular programming with an enormous variety of minority interests, and it was training ground and showcase for writers, actors, journalists, documentarians, and a whole range of production staff, musicians, orchestras, etc., that would go on to work for channels, in the film industry, and internationally. Britain's strength in expirting cultural products has been sustained in one way or another by the BBC. People have always whinged about the licence fee, but the BBC produced and suppirte all the things that it did for really not very much money at all. It's still less than £18 a month, which is the cost of Netflix Ultra HD. And if you want to see a show on Amazoon, and something else on Disney, and alm the other streaming platforms, then the costs really staet to rack up. Of course if people dont watch free to air tv channels, they shouldn't be obliged to pay for them, except there are doubtless a lot of freeloaders. Consumers have become very transactional and they only want to pay for the things they consume. Some of them only want to hear information that suits with their world view, and rage at any covdrage being given to politicians or issues they don't like. But I've been watching a lot of US news recently, because of the election, and I'm often shocked by the obvious political bias of 'news' programmes one way or the other, the shameless librrties that are taken with facts on channels like Fox, and the much more deferential style of political interviewers who often elicit answers from politicians (and one in particular) that are obviously at odds with the facts and yet go unchallenged. They don't have a Robin Day, a Paxman, or an Emily Maitliss. Those journalits epitomised BBC news and current affairs programming, though I'm not sure they have an obvious successor. But I'm very much in favour of journalists, and clear editorial standards to which they are held accountable. I dont want British news organizations to become imitations of US Media. I'm rambling a bit, but in essence I'm saying that the BBC did a lot of things to a very high standard, for relatively little cost; it has been an internationally renowned cultutal and journalistic institution; it has set a standard for other British media organisations: and it adds value to Britain's cultural industries far beyond its own output. Its Charter, which requires it to inform, educate and entertain, also ensures editorial independence from the Givernment (often to the chagrin of those in power), and its freedom from the demands of advertisers gives it the freedom to develop programming for which the audience might be quite small. It also ensures that major national and sporting events are not put behind an pay per view paywall. These are just some of the things that the BBC does, which may taken granted but would be missed if they ceased, undermining the strength and distinctiveness of British culture.
@MrSmith19845 ай бұрын
The merger needs to happen quite frankly, especially when the Streaming Age has really screwed the Traditional Broadcasters and has increased the amount of competition they face. Most of all from the likes of Netflix, Prime Video & Disney+. I also feel that the licence fee also needs to apply to people with Broadband Connections and/or Phone Contracts.
@itskdog4 ай бұрын
It does - if you're watching anything on iPlayer or watching any live TV from another broadcaster, you need a license. Not entirely sure how Channel 4 enforced that with the Paralympics when they streamed on KZbin, or Sky News with their 24/7 KZbin stream.
@MrSmith19844 ай бұрын
@@itskdog I'm not talking about the apparent requirement for a Licence Fee to use BBC iPlayer. I'm talking about introducing a requirement to have a Licence Fee before one is permitted to purchase a Broadband or Mobile Phone service of any kind in Britain. Even if one has zero intention of using BBC iPlayer at all. I would also point out that Channel 4 doesn't actually ask if you have a Licence Fee in relation to using its Streaming Service, probably because it doesn't really receive anything from it. Which in turn explains why it didn't ask anything about having a Licence Fee in relation to their Paralympics Coverage on KZbin. As for Sky News, well they are not a PSB of any kind and thus they don't receive any Licence Fee money at all. The free stream on KZbin is probably because of Sky's long held policy of treating Sky News as a loss leader, hence why it's long been on Freeview as well.

Fourthly, half the population see it with a left wing bias and half the nation see it having a right wing bias, or as an organisation that wants to tick boxes rather than employ the best for the job, so "why should I pay when they don't represent me/Britain"etc. It's really not comparable to PBS I think and just wouldn't work here

Take an average day across BBC TV. Count how many hours are new TV shows and not news. Very little. I think there should be just 1 live TV channel and call it BBC Television! Kids tv will be on it between 4-6pm. And programs such as gardeners world can be moved to an afternoon slot. And as majority of the public have iPlayer most programmes will be watched when you want to watch them. But if you still record programmes at least they will still be on live tv at some point. As long as they don't interfere too much. BBC's standards of journalism are dire, whereas Channel 4's are good. There is also the matter of sport, where successive issues with both broadcasters (but much more so the BBC) have caused multiple sports to scale back, or indeed leave entirely, free to air television: Formula 1, Formula E and the Olympics to give just three examples
