@johnking517421 күн бұрын
People need to remember that ITV have never embraced Christmas for a few reasons - first when ITV launched in 1955 there was never a unified look for presentation as each region had their own style, so Christmas presentation couldn't be unified apart from trailers. That wouldn't change until around 1998. Next, ITV is commercial and don't want to waste big shows in days where ad revenue is very low (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day) so Michael Grade once said the motto was "cheap and cheerful". Some years they would compete like 1978 when they poached Morecambe and Wise from the BBC. Other than that, right to this very day, they do cheap and cheerful mode.

That sounds like a good idea on paper and probably would help draw in more viewers at Christmas but it’d be next to impossible to have a Wallace and gromit film every year. It’d take most of the year to actually produce, assuming they haven’t ditched claymation for CGI, it would be expensive and would probably flop after a few years unless they can think of entertaining, gripping stories to keep viewers interested.

I ended up in the High Dependency Unit for two days, and as well as the festive TV line-up, I missed everything else that day. Except the dinner. For another, DW did have some very particularly heavy competition this year. I mean, we’ve seen DW at least once on BBC One nearly every year since 2005; so to have beloved classics like Gavin & Stacey (which was a series finale) and Wallace & Gromit (which has a VERY sporadic release schedule) air on the same day strikes me as pretty much a no-brainer that they’re going to get a lot of attention either way too.

As a Coronation Street watcher I'm glad Coronation Street didn't go into the top 10 but EastEnders did twice because with Corrie the script quality has gone right down, we have 2 pregnancy stories (one of which is a whose the daddy story, the other is a deeply religious celebate woman who months ago decided to sleep with her murderer boyfriend....we didn't see this, weeks after he his exit the writers thew this in), another baby by the murderer whos mum is currently in prison for murdering the murderer, and the other baby is going to save that babys life (think My Sister's Keeper) , 2 sisters fighting, David in a huff cos he got cheated on and a bent copper and a couple of bullies causing chaos.Coming up we have a new family arriving for no reason, the Webster's pretty much ALL having issue led stories at once Kevin's going to have prostate cancer,( even though the corrie writers recently did a bad job at writing Toyah's ovarian cancer storyline turning it into a reason for her to have an affair with her brother-in-law), Abi I'm guessing some form of PTSD storyline as she sees Manson get attacked like her son did, a random long-lost webster showing up and they're killing off Debbie Webster, the best character in the show with early dementia storyline. The comedy is just gone, too many issue led storylines at once mean its heavy to watch and the issues aren't highlighted well. Carla & Lisa are the only good thing rn in it. The writer's need to buck their ideas up to compete with EastEnders, to get back up in the top 10 on Christmas day, I'm hoping this is a kick up the backside for ITV if they can't even get in the top 10 on Gail's exit episode.

Maybe we as fans would have been better off with a second long break to allow Doctor Who to restart in a proper new era again about 5-10 rather than 20 years though so we can enjoy the good stuff over again then rather than it go like it has. Gavin and Stacy did the right thing going out with a bang whilst it was still hot which leads to people wanting more one offs now and then still. Wallace and Gromit the first time on linier tv I thought 4 stars whilst the rest was 5 star classics because it wasn't the 1st film Ware Rabbit because it seemed a bit too television as a film but the second time on IPlayer lifted it up as the normal 5 stars you expect by them because you notice the start is the actual ending of Wrong Trousers making the classic the major part of this film and it still being the early 90s in that one especially with Fluffles not being a part of the family once you understand why that intro it lifts the quality right up especially as you have seen the first half hour 100s of times before the film portion. Maybe they should have even edited the title card out and released the 1st half hour again in the film itself would have been even better.

Not a huge fan of the BBC as a whole but in terms of shows its gold sure Gavin and Stacey was a fond farewell but lets be honest theres gonna be another one £😂

No, there won't. Every actor has said no, and this time it will not happen again. There's no maybe about it. It's called "The Finale", it's not just Gavin and Stacey. With Neighbours they also I think put that as part of a season when it was the last episode for channel 5, but Gavin and Stacey finale is it's own thing, not part of an existing season.

BBC1 killed it. Gavin and Stacey was rightly winner but I was also impressed with W&G and really enjoyed Dr WHO (rumours of its demise are clearly premature). Call the midwife was its usual high quality too Thank you for another great episode.😅

Interesting results! I watched 3 of the top ten. Dr Who, Call the Midwife and The King. The last is definitely a family tradition. Strictly is normally a thing in my household, however the Christmas day one is never as good as the live series and we decided to give the Christmas one a miss in our household for that reason.

I was surprised at just how much I liked this year's Dr Who Christmas special, which even as a huge fan who first watched the show in 2005 (and read all of my dad's mountain of novels before that) I generally find kind of meh. I liked Ncuti's first season on the whole even if it was a bit of a mixed bag, but I'm genuinely very interested in where they take this Doctor from here.
@jukesy199219 күн бұрын
I agree. I found the special kind of meh but it has not turned me off the show at all, quite the opposite actually. Yet there's still people calling it woke, message this and message that. People are just burned burned burned and full blown sinics now, and it'ss sad to see.

The whole idea of "Dr who is dying out because the viewership is dropping" thing is baffling to me. Dr who is consistently being watched on the iPlayer rather than live TV and people always come back. I didn't like Jodie Whittaker as the doctor, she was miscast in my opinion but when her time was up I was happy to come back and I'm sure a lot of people are the same, the beauty of the doctor is that a different actor will always come along letting people come and go as they please.

Hmmm well...explain this. Tennant era Xmas special the next Doctor got 13 million or so live views on Christmas day. And more still via Iplayer and catchup after the event. Gatwas special for this year got just over 4 million live views. And that was with it sandwiched between other popular shows to help it. It was lower rated than last years, so it takes the new record of the lowest rated special from the previous one. Lastly look at the entire last season run of Gatwa Doctor Who. About 2 million or just over live views, slow decline away each episode. Then when you add on Iplayer, Catchup, Consolidated etc and ALL OTHER methods of viewing, after a WEEK, that figure still does not equal or surpass the live views. Its less. Adding another 1.6 - 1.9 million to the 2 million or so live views. So the largest audience is still the live over night ratings, which are incredibly low. Now if after a week it added 6 - 8 million views consolidated and Iplayer etc to the 2 million live, you could claim it was ok and people were indeed watching it more via other methods than live. But they are not. Not even close.....
@thebasementfilmgroup19 күн бұрын
@Simon-xc5oy Eastenders used to have over 10 million viewers too, but ranks around 4 mill... similar figures to DW..... you cannot compare viewing figures of the past to today.... it just doesnt add up
@starviper164619 күн бұрын
@@thebasementfilmgroup But the new series of Doctor Who had on average overnight viewership of only 2 million. So 4 million is still bad for a CHRISTMAS SPECIAL. The fact one of the two Eastenders episodes managed to beat Doctor Who on Christmas Day lol is quite embarrassing (especially considering Doctor Who has a significantly bigger budget than a shitty soap opera like Eastenders lol).

Stacked with shows????? Not from what I saw of it. I do admire the optimistic take of youth. I wish I was that young and innocent again. Wallace and Gromit was good as far as it went, less to do with the BBC and more to do with the Aardman company that made it with some Netflix money. Doctor Who was the lowest rated Christmas special for that show, even lower live figures than last year. It was even beaten by the usual misery of Eastenders later on. Wallace and co got more than twice its audience and Gavin and Stacy got three times its numbers. The rest was repeats, the usual stuff and films that have been around a long time. In other words typical modern BBC. For me the only thing I grabbed online after the event yesterday was Wallace and Gromit. Everything else I have either seen or did not want to see. Wallace was ok...but somehow it did not bring me the enjoyment it used to....I think its down to me having seen so many of them over the years, that its lost a lot of its unique charm, but its still nice to see all the same....its just no longer new and fresh like it was. To me anyway.

You might not have been the audience for W&G. I'm in my 30's, so I actually get a lot of the AI references. The song, for instance, sounds like something suno AI would write, which is a music creating AI platform. It's of course performed by and voiced by humans so not an AI song, but it was so similar to what Suno would do. So there's a lot of things that the older generation wouldn't get if they aren't caught up on the AI side of things. Interestingly, no Chat GPT reference. The password and captcha thing was also really funny.
