Has ITVX Failed?

It's been over 2 years since ITVX launched as the latest streaming service. And after those 2 years, has the site been able to reach the heights of success? Or has it been nothing but a disastrous failure...

There is ITV3 and ITV4 which show older programmes, but its a limited number of older shows which they show and it's often the same ones like classic Emmerdale and Corrie, Heartbeat, Midsomer Murders, The Sweeny, Minder etc... I'd rather see other older ITV shows too that are not currently shown on other channels like London's Burning, The Grimley's, The Bill, old episodes of Through The Keyhole and some others. Those are not even on ITVX as far as I know.

I actually am an ITVX subscriber, but that's because I *loathed* my experience watching 'Mr Bates vs the Post Office' being interrupted with whiplash inducing adverts. Going from devastating drama and hard-cutting to fun/quirky bingo adverts killed the experience.

I'm a subscriber for the same reason, ads are tedious at best, and the bingo/ gambling ads are excruciatingly cheesy. I was previously subscribed to Brit Box, and was on the point of cancelling, but it rolled over to ITVX and I stayed for Doctor Who and the Gerry Anderson shows, but Doom Patrol was the cherry on the cake, as a fan of the 60's comic book.

I bet you wished you knew about the premium anyway hack before where you only have to actually watch the ads before the show then fast forward to the next ads watch a black screen with a swirly circle and continue it until all the ads areas are done before returning to the start to watch it ad free for free.

Not only to remove certain jokes but anything that isn't perfect technically is a target in the case of the BBC. Also to tighten up the pacing as they see it or to fit a certain slot.

I think ITV as a whole is crap. I missed those days when ITV was regional, and television felt more personal and tailored. Ever since 1997, ITV has been all about Simon Cowell and terrible reality TV shite that hasn't done ITV, no favours. The masses attracted to Popstars, Britain, Got Talent, etc, are people with no concept about what made ITV what it was. I'd be happy to see ITV like the BBC vanish down a blackhole never to return....

I agree about ITV being crap now. I live in Northern Ireland so we have the regional UTV which I grew up watching, first as a child in the 90s. I liked UTV for many reasons. It had iconic local idents, music, regional shows which there were a lot more of back then and more than that. Eventually ITV took most of that regional uniqueness away in the 2010s and since, it doesn't look much different from the main ITV. I liked a lot of ITV shows in the 90s like CITV, SM:TV Live, The Upper Hand, The Grimley's, London's Burning, Blind Date, The Bill, Through The Keyhole, Noels House Party, Heartbeat, A Touch of Frost, Stars In Their Eyes and probably a few more I can't think of now. Now apart from a few regional UTV shows I watch and I'm a Celebrity and maybe one or two other shows like the new Gladiators and You Bet, I barely watch ITV anymore.

@DynamixWarePro I agree. Losing Thames, then LWT, much later was a mega blow. Even ATV in the Midlands was a significant loss back in the early 1980s. ATV's output was quite remarkable, especially TV drama. I'm sorry to say, but the future of TV looks more and more fragmented. I see a day when only two corporations will control all of the past TV archives, and everything will be streamed. There will be old TV productions that I doubt will ever see the light of day again. The only place you might see them, physical media, but these days, even physical media and archive tv are significantly suffering. The BBC and Fremantle don't licence any new old TV programmes for DVD or Blu-Ray release. Only last year, the BFI stated that The Play for Today Blu Ray releases would stop due to poor sales. Since the issues with Network DVD, no company is forthcoming to release archival TV material.

I said this a while back on an Adam Martyn video about ITVX, that the absolute deal-breaker for me is that you cannot skip to a specific part of a show when it is still broadcasting live and you're watching time-shifted. You can pause, you can go right back to the start, or watch live. But if you just want to watch, say, an item twenty minutes into This Morning, you're stuck with watching for twenty minutes until it reaches that part. Absolutely defeats the object of on-demand. I get that they are doing it so that people don't skip the ad breaks, but there has to be a solution where they somehow make just the ad-breaks un-skippable. Same as when purely streaming a past show on ITVX. For me, that's my only bugbear but it's a humdinger of an issue which I find makes the service unusable when time shifting.

It makes a lot of sense for a magazine show to have some sort of marker or skip option to get to the bits you want. Seems very restrictive to force you to watch basically the entire show.

It's been said many times but the problem is - too many native streaming apps! Broadcast TV had one major advantage - all the channels were available in one place. These days it's just too much bother to keep flicking between native apps for each provider. (I know it isn't really that hard, but each app needs to be actively thought about and opened to browse content). And sadly, any chance of having one universal streaming app for all TV content in a particular country seems to have long since departed...

It's being talked about. Try the Freeview App. Not to forget that iPlayer did have a option to view ITV and Channel 4/5 content from the iPlayer. They just provided a link, but you can see the thinking is there. Now the Freeview App provides this. But really it needs to natively play from one App. Not a link

Totally get this, I'm not a fan of streaming apps, they're so complicated and even when I've found something I would watch on linear TV, it feels pointless and self defeating to watch it on a streaming service. It just makes me anxious about what decision I'll have to make next.

ITVX is the buggiest streaming service that I've ever seen and used, especially on a television. My parents' TV was only bought in 2019 and it runs ITVX like it's being powered by a potato, whereas when it was ITV Hub it ran really smoothly...I can't believe it's still a thing

On my TV experience ITV Hub didn't load a video though but had super quick menus. ITV X the videos work better than Hub ever did for me but the menus unmovable slow really. Both were crap if one has bad menus the other bad black screen only videos.

It's editing old shows, and indeed taking off whole episodes because of compliance issues, I watch most shows multiple times a year, and on digital platforms including itvx I go to a show to find licence has finished So I prefer physical media, all episides, no bad edits and watch multiple times

What i do to avoid ads as much aa possible apart from ads before the programme is fast forward as soon as the show starts and press play for a second after each ad break white marker it skips the ad breaks. Then once you get to the last ad point rewind to the start then it plays the whole thing without playing any adverts takes around 4 minutes to do compared with watching the 3 ad breaks in a 45 minute show. Edit: that is on the tv app on a pc or Laptop it is much quicker as you can click the mouse past 1st ad 2nd ad 3rd ad point then click the mouse right to the start

I can see the problems adding up to be honest, as someone who is 30 growing up with linear television ITV always seemed to be this lowest common denominator thing stuffed full of ads to boot. Don't get me wrong I have found stuff to enjoy like Harry Hill back in the day and Quiz during lock down but its still mostly churning out the same stuff its always done just with trend chasing true crime sludge now too. Even when I tune in for something like the football while improved in coverage in recent years, its commentary team still leave something to be desired. Together with streaming fatigue settling in, its a hard sell.

I miss BritBox. I’m an ITV+ Premium subscriber because I was rolled into it after BritBox went away. Poor replacement in my view (and a lot of the previous BritBox content vanished) and a dreadful UI.

Biggest issue with ITVX is the live streaming. Slow to load, terrible interface, difficult or impossible to go back. The worst one is they show unskippable ads before loading a live channel, which is so annoying if your program is just starting or there is a live sport event on. Sort it out ITV.

Pretty much everybody I've spoken to immediately assumes from the name that itvx is some sort of adult entertainment branch of ITV. If the service sinks, I think that the name is going to be one of the heavist bits of concrete.

Im sick of streaming services full stop at the moment. Prices go up and up and then they have the audacity to add advertisements (the very thing people do not want) and then expect you to pay even more the remove the ads THEY put there. I refuse to watch Amazon Prime TV for this reason. I don't have live broadcast TV as i don't want to pay a TV License for the BBC...as i have not watched BBC for over 5 years now. Then there's Netflix who cancel anything and everything i get into. Dead Boy Detectives was fantastic for example, and popular yet has not been renewed. I have lost count of how many series i have really enjoyed to find out it has been cancelled by Netflix. I think people will eventually go back to physical media again...DVDs and Blu Ray, they can't add adverts or take them away from you if they're on a shelf in your lounge can they?

You could go further… HBO Max (which isn’t even in the UK yet), Disney Plus and Paramount Plus also purge their content as tax write-offs or if the licenses expire. People are right, you don’t own anything on streaming, especially when compared to physical media when you not only own the content but also can hold onto it for as long as you want; unless scalpers haven’t gotten to it first.

I tend to subscribe to ITVX for a few months and then cancel it for a bit. Just before Christmas I went to end my current run. For the first time ever I was offered a deal not to cancel where I can pay £2.99 a month for the next 3 months instead which I have accepted. That certainly suggests ITV are now at a point where they are desperate not to lose subscribers even if it means making it half price. If there are any other subscribers who read this, try the cancel process as you'll probably get the same deal.

ITV has had a strong presence on KZbin for years with loads of channels hosting full shows like Our Stories, Taste and so on which host tons of their older content that typically gets rinsed and repeated on ITV2 & 3.

I watched the first episode of Doom Patrol on another platform (Amazon Prime?) but had to pay for each episode or season. As a fan of the 1960's comic book, I was gutted, but I couldn't justify the cost, so seeing the show on ITVX was a godsend. Plus Doctor Who and other shows makes it well worth the cost.

ITVX is one of the least user friendly services you are bombarded by ads constantly (unlike channel 4 you cant see how long is left of the adverts) it is borderline impossible to rewind to a certain point whether on demand and just completely impossible to rewind on a live stream which was incredibly annoying during the Euros especially. ITVX is pathetic to use compared with Iplayer and Channel 4.

Aren't all the young 'uns watching TikTok (or whatever has taken over from that for even younger viewers)? KZbin is regarded as an "old" platform by Generation Alpha and late Gen Z.

The start of ITV failure is when ITV introduced on screen logos on their channels include ITVX. These ITV channels has damaged my TV with a logo burn. More People will watch standard TV if channel logos are removed. The problem with on demand and streaming services you need good broadband speed if your broadband is less than 10mbs your TV experience is less than standard TV instead of HD or 4K.

It’s great on mobile and I rarely run into bugs on ITVX but on my braille note as I am blind I use it sometimes for streaming purposes and ITVX doesn’t seem to work when I wanna watch catch up only works through live TV and it’s fast channels they need to sort that out as the braille note is an android device. I’m not sure if it’s an android thing or it’s not compatible on certain devices.

We might need a couple years/after the Charter before we start seeing major changes in the TV streaming formula Good TV will keep it alive. Content is king. The "death" of TV is not 100% because people stream now. Poor programs and failure to adapt to the times are a major factor. IPTV (internet TV guide style streaming) is exploding in popularity. The wish for on demand TV is there. If execs continue being anti consumer (Freely not being on a box, you have to buy a new TV etc.) then its over. Shout out Channel 4 who are at least trying 🙏

ITVX doesn’t have any anchor content really, BBC has Dr Who, 4 has comedy shows, Paramount has Star Trek, Disney has Star Wars, Netflix has things like Squid Games. There’s nothing you can associate ITVX with other than far too many crime dramas which as all very samey. ITV needs some original SciFi, comedy and documentaries as at the moment it’s stuck with crime drama and reality shows.

My biggest issue with ITVX is just the basic issues. Its tracking where your at and continue watching. I oaid the £3 to remove ads as tgey have a lot of good content but the functionality of the app is horrendous. Sometimes programs dont even get uploaded to the right area of the app. And that not counting all the errirs and bugs tgat were just barely fixed.

ITV X could get Think Box to think outside the box and commission a rebrand of ITV X through The Happily Ever After Advertising Agency. The frog in the swamp could consult on wildlife programmes. The woman who lives in the shoe could executive produce current affairs programmes on poverty, homelessness, cost of living crisis and austerity. Daisy could advise documentaries on health and safety on farming, agriculture, food and drink industries. Other wee folk and fairy tale characters could investigate politicians. Alternatively Monkey and Vegas could return and work with new characters. ITV has a history of buying in talent from outside ITV and could decide to buy in services from the TV Meerkats to raise ratings.

I quite like it in terms of some quite random old content, especially films and there seems more content than is shown. The ads are to be expected as it’s ITV. It’s the utter new rubbish that’s on ITV that is the problem. The only programme I watch across the whole ITV channels is the EFL football highlights. As for the “X” making it look like an adult channel, it had never entered my mind.

I don't have a Smart TV but purchased a Firestick primarily for catchup and boxsets. Not live TV (I have Freeview and Freesat for that). I'm enjoying using ITVX for Flash, Twelve Monkeys, Doom Patrol and shows for which I missed the beginning - such as Red Eye and Trigger Point. (This occurs more often since I abandoned Radio Times at the outset of Covid.) Ads? I'm used to them, and since I usually multitask when watching telly, I use the ads or the pause button when my attention is needed elsewhere. Sport? No interest.

Perhaps one idea is for the various main UK channels to come up with their own collective one stop shop video streaming platform in order to maintain control and retain all revenues from sponsorship and advertising. Something more adventurous than BritBox. If terrestrial TV is truly on its way out then it's time to start that move to finding the right solution to providing both a local and international online service. Personally i enjoy ITVX, there's alot of good content, i have no streaming issues, i cant stand ads so i do pay the extra for the ad free service, but like when i use Netflix i dont pay for the ad free service ITVX every month, i would be disappointed if ITV closed the service.

Do wish that subscribers could miss some adbreaks on live tv/get alternative content (e.g. get light hearted bits or failed segments from big brother, im a celeb) or put on 3 minute short broadcasts on other ad breaks (idk what this would be). Thats my grand idea, wont go anywhere though 😂

They’ll always push ad funded free to watch model, the premium service will likely just become ad free model with nothing extra. Ad skipping BTW is far cheaper to do via Sky Glass or Sky Stream, pay once to cover multiple services.

I use it to a watch Minder and The Sweeney, the ad breaks add to the nostalgia (though the ads themselves are repetitive and shit). Would I pay for it. Nope. 23 hours of new content isn't really that impressive unless you like all 23 hours of that content.

I was excited when ITVX first launched and it was good for the first few months, but then there were just too many adverts, I would be watching a show an either the app would crash, or there would be seemingly endless adverts.

unsure whether they’ve solved it now (haven’t checked in a while), but the nail in the coffin for ITV Hub for me was that it wasn’t available on PS4. I would have to plug my laptop into the TV which was an unnecessary faff and I’d only do it if there where something I really really wanted to watch. Not prioritising making sure your platform is available everywhere just seems like a really strange oversight.

Corrie and Emmerdale are in a dire way, really strapped of cash and can’t guarantee contracts beyond 2025. The cast are being very open about it. Cast are now getting shorter contracts where they can go off and do their own thing now and again. Using younger cast members as cheaper than using show veterans, a big cast cull is happening as the cast for both shows are very large.

I think ITV X's branding is a bit of a problem for them, the green/turquoise colour is kinda... boring? It's not eye catching, and the clips the show always have the same subdued look, it could still pull in an older audience, but it wont appeal to younger people as much

The only time I watch ITV X is to watch sport on ITV4 in HD. That's only because Freeview only show ITV4 in SD.

A crude attempt to squeeze cash out of viewers. Should never have been allowed by ofcom. Since its introduction itv viewing figures are down. However you care to look at it itv x has been a failure (except for itv managers who seem to be coining it).

ITV's programming has taken a nosedive in recent years, abandoning quality content for a mind-numbing lineup of cheap reality shows and soap operas. Their abysmal Christmas schedule, filled with nothing but reruns, exemplifies this downward spiral. How can ITV expect to attract viewers when they offer such insultingly low-brow programming?

I think ITVX needs to become like BBC iplayer stick all the archive and current program's including historic Corrie ,Emmerdale ect on without ads only live content like Football matches and other program's on TV should be with ads . Like watching DOND is fine cause its a hour when its live but if i wanted to watch a 2023 episode its sitting through ads.

From what I last saw not too long ago, ITV is being eyed up by a number of suitors who want to purchase both ITVX and Studios. Not the broadcasting part though. Likely for the programming, movie and sports rights but not the broadcasting network, public service broadcasting obligations or regional aspects of it. And after the humbling of ITV at Christmas, things are not looking good for the broadcaster. In terms of ad-free subscription services, they always become subscription services with ads. Happened with satellite and cable TV services back in the 90s and it'll happen with streaming services.

Let's be honest, it's Tipping Point and the Chase every day, the 'event' shows are the execrable Love Island, I'm a Celeb, Britain Has X Factor on Ice, or whatever it's called and various platforms for Ant and Dec. None of which I have ever watched, nor would I ever watch. Mr. Bates was a diamond in the cesspit, but 'Douglas is Cancelled', despite a great writer and Karen Gillan, who I will always watch, was dull and predictable.

I don't really think there's much on there, definitely not enough to pay for. In the last year or year and a half I've watched hammer house of horror on there, which is great that they have an 80s show that is really good if you like older horror (think tales of the unexpected but on a higher budget) but really thats the only thing I've watched because nothing else seemed worth my time.

Personally I don't have any issues with ITVX, having not watched ITV for anything other than the world Cup and maybe an occaisuanl drama for at least 7 years. Can't say I miss it.

Paying for ITVX and constantly getting adverts for ITV shows is infuriating. Been watching through Parks and Rec on there and I get adverts for the same Alan Carr show probably once each episode.

We pay for ITVX Premium which supposedly removes ads, but watch anything from the US (like your Parks and Rec example) including movies and there are constant breaks in the programme which they have to put there for “licensing reasons” apparently. The really annoying thing is these breaks are not filled with ads but trailers for other ITV shows. There any only so many of these so eventually you find the same ones coming round. We recently watched the US mini series with Andrew Garfield where he plays a mormon police detective in the 80s. It was really good, but after 6 hour long episodes we were going insane with the same trailers all the time. We now avoid any US content on there as it is practically unwatchable with this method of presentation.

@@samcampbell5564 Recently Fringe appeared on ITVX which I really enjoyed when I first watched it more than 10 years ago. We tried to watch the first ep but the breaks got really annoying so I bought the bluray boxset and we’re working through them on there now.
