Wasdale Fell Race - Summer of Fell Running #02

The Wasdale Fell Race (sometimes known as the Wasdale Horseshoe) is an annual Lake District fell race held in July, starting and finishing at Brackenclose in Wasdale. The course is approximately 21 Miles / 32km with around 9,000 ft / 2750 m of ascent and takes in checkpoints at Whin Rigg, Seatallan, Pillar, Great Gable, Esk Hause shelter, Scafell Pike and Lingmell nose wall. Among long fell races, Wasdale has one of the highest ratios of feet of ascent per mile, and it is often considered to be the toughest of the British races.

Is it really the case that you can take any line you want in a fell race? If so, why not just cut off the entire loop of a circular or oval race and go by the shortest route from start to finish (which might be exactly the same spot, saving you having to do any running at all)? Sorry, that's probably not said in the spirit of fell running is it? Oh, and I suppose you usually have to check in at check points.

@@ebdavies100 to answer your question in more details - firstly, there are check points through out the race. You can take any line you wish from check point to check point but not from start to finish avoiding the checkpoints. If you don't go through check points your attempt won't be counted. Secondly, the shortest lines, as you mentioned are not necessarily the easiest ones to go on, it might be very rough that you won't even be able to run or move quickly at all. So in fell running you should be able to make the right judgment of if a shortcut is doable or if the longer way in distance could be quicker in time. Navigation skills in fell running is paramount. I hope it clarifies your question a bit more. It's not really to do with fell running spirit really. If you have any more questions, I am happy to answer. Also some areas are out of bounds in the race due to the fact that the race organiser would not get a permission for 100s of people running and eroding that area. There are a lot of factors that go into consideration to do with local environment.
