You play so well, it's really hard to distinguish a great deal of difference in the instruments, but I like the sound of the E3 just a little bit better. It's just slightly darker and sounds more rounded to me. Such a beautiful tone with both instruments.

... The technical "show pieces." You feature the beautiful euphonium sound! The E3 sounds just a bit darker to me?

Thanks! And I would agree that the E3 is a bit darker. What may not be easy to hear on the recording is that it also is smoother in note-to-note moves and has a greater volume capacity. For unknown reasons, the high range is also easier (not always expected from a bigger-sounding model).

I kind of agree to the general concensus. The E3 sounds bigger and darker than the E1. I had the pleasure to try an E3 last month as the local music store paid our band a visit with a bunch of instruments to try. There was also a Yamaha 842 and after playing both back to back, there was no contest between the two. The 842 sounded almost like a baritone next to the Adams. I'm also not a Yamaha fan. Don't get me wrong, they make great instruments overall, but to me, Yamaha is to brass instrument what Toyota is to cars... Everything good, but nothing outstanding.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought about that about the Yamaha 842. I know I’ve heard people say that about the Adams E1, but the 842 sounds even more like a baritone horn compared to the E1.

I listened to these immediately after hearing a trombone piece, and I couldn't tell enough difference to recognize that the instrument(s) had changed.

I like the E3 model more. It seems to have a more 'soloistic' sound.

Great playing. I really like the e 3 over would love to try one out. Did you record the excerpts on both horns one day or was it all e1 on one day then e3 a different.

All the same day.

Thanks! Which mouthpiece did you use?
@dwerden4 жыл бұрын
I used a Wick 4AL (which is my standard mouthpiece today).

Love what you do with these Euphoniums, Dave. That having been said, I am curious to know what microphone you’re using, and a little bit about the room. Yes, and what mouthpiece are using with each horn? Do either of the horns seem to favor a larger mouthpiece or a smaller mouthpiece?
@dwerden4 жыл бұрын
I played the same mouthpiece for both horns, a 4AL. When testing I like to use our church sanctuary. It is a semi-modern building with wood structure, fairly high ceiling, and some carpet on the floor. It's a pretty room for recording and for testing horns. Unfortunately, it is closed at least for the summer, so I have had to hold off testing a new Adams non-compensating euphonium (non-comp, but otherwise built like the Adams E1).

Can you play the Blue Bells of Scotland on euphonium? I really like it.
@dwerden7 жыл бұрын
It works well on euphonium, but that piece is not on my to-do list (yet, anyway).

E3 by far. E1 sounds very hard to blow and has the tone of a Baritone (Brass Band Style)

What is a E3 or E1 and what does it mean? Like I played Euphonium in high school but never heard the terminology
@dwerden7 жыл бұрын
The brand of the euphonium is Adams, which is a company in Holland (The Netherlands). Their horns are hand-made and can be customized in a great many ways. They have 3 basic models: E1, E2, and E3. Each is available in different types of metal and various finishes.
