I chose to depict this bird with its prey (rarely seen in scrimshaw). I use simple terms in this video for all to understand. I scrimmed this piece for the Scrimshaw Gallery: www.ScrimshawGallery.com

This is tuely amazing, I tried and failed terribly, I only wanted solid colour for knife handles - triangles but couldn't work out how to do it.

Hi David: Thanks for the shout back. I am very new to scrimshaw. Your work is beautiful. What is the best book or disk to buy so that I can get a better idea of how scrimshaw is done. My first attempts on acrylic were a disaster. It's hard for me to understand that poking and scratching with a tool can achieve such great work. I'm probably trying to rush things. Ed

Hi Bill! Thanks for your comment! Your statement is incorrect. If you put your mind to it and have a great attitude, you'll surprise yourself with wonderful artwork! Here's a tip: With eyes closed, visualize being immersed in your drawing/scrimshaw; every line and stipple; shading and coloring. Visualize very clearly your creation coming to fruition. This will build confidence and empowerment as the catalyst for creative endeavors. If you can visualize it, you can manifest it into reality. I wish you the BEST... David

Great work, how do you avoid getting ink in the surrounding areas after an area is inked? It would seem that rubbing with the paper towel would spread it around. Thanks for doing these videos.
@adamsalive8 жыл бұрын
The ink is applied from cool colors to warm colors. The reason for this is that the ink does slightly bleed into surrounding colors; it is undetectable because the darker hues have a stronger chroma. When the neighboring color has a similar value, I'm very careful to wipe the ink off as not to affect another color.

Hi David: Do you tools that are driven by electric? Or is the work done by many hand pushes of the scribeing tool? Sincerely Ed Mc Shea Vero Beach, FL
@adamsalive8 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed - I do the scrimshaw with a simple scriber, the traditional way of scrimshaw. There's more control and accuracy. I will never use a machine to do the work.

What brand of ink do you use? Some day I would love to do beautiful work like this!
@adamsalive8 жыл бұрын
Hi Elena - Thank you for the kind words. I use a brand of ink called Higgins. The black ink they offer is the best! It's Higgins Black Magic. You can find it on eBay.

Hi Elena, I just saw your comment! Sorry for the late reply. KZbin doesn't alert me when most comments are posted. I use Higgins inks. The black is Higgins Black Magic. Take care... David

What are you using? Tool wise that is. I ask cause I am doing a beaver skull and I just can't get the color to stay...not sure if it's cause the stipples arent deep enough or what.

Thanks for the comment! The graver I use is a pin vise with a carbide pin. This video is very old. My newer videos has much more info regarding all of the tools I use to etch ivory. In addition, I provide links in the description area to purchase tools for scrimshaw. I wish you the best with your projects... David Adams

What kind of scriber do you use and where did you get it?
@adamsalive4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dustin, I use a simple pin holder with a carbide pin. I also grind down used dental burs to a sharp point to secure into the scribe. Other terms used for a scribe is graver or stylus. I don't know where to get these. I got a bunch years ago and still using them. David

Hi Sam, Thanks for the comment! I use very light pressure when outlining a subject; corrections are easier to resolve if a mistake is made. I use a light touch when etching details as well. Take care... David Adams
