Everything about Radical Optimism era was messy and bad. The reason why it underperformed: 1. Starting the era too soon - Dance The Night was a huge hit for Dua and she was also feeding public on her social media. People didn't get the chance to really miss her. Once Dance The Night started smashing she should've postponed everything. The lead single should've came only on February 2, 2024 right before the Grammys with Dua debuting the song at the Grammys. 2. She should've announced Radical Optimism at the Brit Awards when she won Best Pop Act - perfect way how to announce an album, just look at how it works for Taylor every time she does that, all attention is on you and people are interested for your bold move. 3. Dua got between 2 huge album campaigns - The Tortured Poets Department & Hit Me Hard And Soft and without a huge hit she had no chance to stand out against her peers. There wasn't much she could do about this but it definitely was a factor. 4. Change of the aesthetic - the kaleidoscope aesthetic was superior, interesting and fresh idea that stood out, suddenly changing it with summery ocean aesthetic only confused people. 5. We needed better visuals - Houdini is ok MV and Traning Season is straight up horrendous for her standards. Illusion was the first good music video of the era and it was the 3rd single. What helped Future Nostalgia were the stunning visuals, so i think RO got hurt by this. 6. Dua gave up on the era - after Illusion she haven't released any more singles. Maybe something would've catch up if she tried push more songs - Falling Forever or These Walls or Happy For You or End Of An Era (Remix) (feat. Doja Cat) could've done something maybe. She also wasn't promoting this album much, she spend most of the year on vacations instead of promoting. 7. Lack of artistic evolution - Dua promised entirely something different than what we got. Dua teased "psychedelic-pop-infused tribute to UK rave culture" but except for the 3 singles which don't have as strong of this influences as i would like, the album sounds nothing alike it. 8. Firing her original team and hire her dad as her manager - this was probably the worst thing that doomed the era from the beginning. I'm sure Dua's dad is a lovely man but we can see he has no idea how to manage a main pop girl. I don't think Dua's career is over in the slightest but she must come back with something really strong for the swing turn her way again. I would love to see her dive into Soft Rock and R&B sound, i think people would be seated for something like that.

As a “love”, here’s my reasons it underperformed. 1. she never promoted RO songs on the summer tours or even the actual RO tour. 2.she kept releasing singles too far apart form each other and 3. Not to be a pessimist but I think she'll just go the way of Katy Perry, but less embarrassing. I think she'll remain pretty big in Europe but will just exist as a popular figure/influencer as opposed to a main pop girl. Sabrina Carpenter kinda dethroned her as the pop girl with the fun bops.

People really be acting like the word "flop" is right here when the album has 1.7 BILLION streams already on spotify ALONE. Like, I'm sorry but this project is nowhere near a flop, the least streamed song on the album has 14M plays come on. edit: and by the way I'm not a big fan of the album, so it's unbiased, we just can't call it a flop when the singles streams range from 960M to 300M (youtube+spotify only)

@dso2010 23 сағат бұрын
@@prettycuresoundz something similar to what Dua herself already did with Houdini. And Anything for Love was the exception because it actually made a little more sense to be extended. With Houdini, she added variety in the instrumentals (sometimes stripping down the stems for a more dramatic effect), put on new vocal parts, actually extended and enhanced it. Even Training Season had some of that effort. Some of the extended tracks (Illusion and These Walls, for example) are simply the same instrumentals from the verse repeated, one time with the vocals and one time without, in a way that actually kills the tempo because the song doesn’t progress nicely.

I personally didn't really hear much about the album flopping at the time of its release, as during 2024 i was living in Europe at the time, where all of her songs were literally playing 24/7. I personally thought the singles were actually so good, they were all catchy and i think if they were on future nostalgia they would be massive hits! I also went to her Summer concert in Croatia and it was amazing. But i do understand why it was such a flop. I personally was confused why all of her outfits at her concert were grey or black, and i didnt know what colours the aesthetic was. Was it black, red, brown, blue, green, yellow? Personally, I think the songs weren't bad, it was just the weird creative direction and lack of marketing

This happens to a lot of artists because when you’ve been that big and had a big era or multiple.. It’s impossible to go higher and do better than you did before because how can you go bigger than you did or beat that. (Especially in her case) especially when you don’t have a crazy voice like Adele. The only way is down which isn’t a bad thing always. (If you have insane projects) I do think Dua’s biggest era has past though. I don’t think she’ll ever be as popular as she was before and during the Barbie era. Which is fine because her songs and streams are massive. People will never forget it. They’ll always be there. Her stream numbers are crazy. She has some of the biggest hits. She’ll be fine and be remembered. She also doesn’t have a fan base. She gets crazy numbers but everyone knows that she’s similar to Ed Sheeran. You never see stans. I think people can’t connect to her music even though it gets streamed like crazy. She didn’t even have anything to do with some of her biggest hits. She even admitted that she didn’t even write New Rules. I think her popularity will stay but maybe not as big. She said herself she doesn’t really like writing about things that are too personal or about guys she’s dated or something so that explains why people don’t have an emotion connection to her. She’s a fun time and songs are fine that way. We need that but I don’t think she’ll have a big album like she’s had again. Could surprise me though.

Personally I wouldn't say that was the main reason. Btw, Radical Optimism DID NOT FLOP, just UNDERPERFORMED and did not live up to Future Nostalgia's expectations. High points for the dark/leather tour looks, we (loves - dua lipa stans), jokingly made up “Vertigo” as Radical Optimism's dark sister album...the whole creative direction was bad and her new team is also not doing good. If she was still with TAP, things would've been diffrent. She recorded a music video in June that it's probably scrapped. I wouldn't say Dua Lipa is a flop, and that Radical Optimism also flopped. It's stable and Dua is doing fine.

I think everything you mentioned makes sense, but there's something that few people talk about and that, as far as I know, almost certainly happened. The first single wasn’t supposed to be Houdini, but rather Training Season... The music video, the most expensive she had filmed up to that point, was already finished and had a military theme, with her undergoing intense military tactics training, planes, explosions... Then came the October 7 attacks in Israel, and the entire military concept was scrapped. They changed the first single to Houdini and rushed to make a new video. I think Training Season would have had a bigger impact if it had been released as the first single. The most ironic part is that Dua Lipa was one of the few major artists to protest against the genocide Israel carried out in Gaza after October 7, and she ended up being boycotted by many media outlets because of it. Basically, a perfect storm happened that prevented this era from being as triumphant as the previous one.

As far as I was aware, Radical Optimism didn't really flop in the UK at least. I think she had the largest debut week for a UK female artist since Adele's 30, it was her first No. 1 debut, she got three top 10 hits, she headlined Glastonbury which garnered some of the festival's best reviews in years, Illusion was on everyone's songs of the year and she's got a string of Brit nominations. It might not have the continued success of the album prior but Radical Optimism was one of the big pop albums of the year.

Despite the fact that I heard her music before. I loved Houdini, Training Season and Illusion to death. They all got me excited for what Dua Lipa would release next. When her album came out it found a special place in my heart. I loved almost every track. I understand and agree that Dua Lipa and Future Nostalgia were better albums. The soul thing that made this era plummet was hiring her dad as her manager and firing her already capable team. I really don’t know why she let her dad be in charge of her marketing, bookings, creative vision, etc. Ben warned her that the tame impala sound was outdated and he was right. I believe her impulsive decision to fire him to, instead, follow her creative vision was an incredible mistake. She should have listened and made a comprise, to have a couple of songs produced by Kevin and others by other producers that could offer a better sound and aesthetic to her music.

She's not a big personality and she doesn't have an obsessive fan base to continuously stream her music, so her chart success lives and dies on the quality of the songs and there was nothing interesting to glob onto. The vibe to the RO album is totally different from FN, this album it feels more like an album you could listen to while in nature or just chilling and it has for me a little more sadder feeling to it cause it about growth and change and learning to let go. My fave songs from her Radical Optimism album is def these walls, Watcha doing, Happy for you, end of an era, Houdini, Illusion. Future Nostalgia feels so energetic and more upbeat and a dance album. Another thing but what I really loved about Future Nostalgia is the feeling you get of listening to the songs, you get such a confidence boost and a feeling of not letting anything stop you and it feels very joyful and a good songs to listen after a breakup or when you’re feeling down!

But she didn’t promote this album well. She overhyped it and should’ve done it up like a chill summer album. It’s ok to do something more laid back, I mean look at Sabrina. The thing RO did better than FN was the fact the ending track on FN didn’t fit the album. But every track on RO does.

1st, we need more YT videos. 2nd: While I do think Dance the night def played a Part in Houdini underperforming, it wasn't at fault for the rest of the album. Where it went wrong in my opinion was Training Season. Good song but the promotion for it was no where to be seen and it released way too late. it released 3 MONTHS after Houdini to the point houidni already started to fade away. then she performed it at the grammys 2 WEEKS before the song released instead of releasing the song and performing it at the grammys to promote it, and the mv was something extremely lazy and kinda boring, while the song sounds good, not amazing but pretty good, she and her team did it dirty. Then we get Illusion which is a BANGER but didn't match the other 2 singles AT ALL and the rest of the album is this chill summery vibe that had nothing to do with the first 2 singles which made no sense at the end of the day. Sadly Marketing didn't market and the brand wasn't there. As you said, hopefully she learns from this and her next era is even bigger than FN landing her, her 1st #1 single.

Idk, theres like NUMEROUS tracks from Kylies "DISCO" album released the same year that would have worked better for that scene anyway, even as someone who LOVES future nostalgia. Oh ya, and 10 number 1 albums spanning 5 consecutive decades (being the literal face of this genre of music) DEFINATELY makes her FAR more the "queen of disco-pop" compared to Dua Lipa

She didn’t push herself far enough as a dancer or take on more intensive choreography. Houdini was a good start, but she didn’t dance at all in the video for Training Season and thar video felt uncomfortable and tense with hundreds of men surrounding her and she sat down the whole time. In Perfect Illusion, she held back during obvious dance breaks. Unfortunately, female singers are often held to a Beyoncé-like standard, where they’re expected to both sing and dance. That’s why so many artists, even someone like Tori Kelly, are incorporating choreography into their performances. It seems like only Adele can get away with not dancing at all.

I personally think Dua should've pushed back the RO album cycle by a year and a bit. There was a lot of great music in 2024 that the competition would've been stacked for both chart performance and awards. I think releasing Houdini in January 2025 or end of 2024 would've worked better to set up for RO dropping early 2025. Training season could've come 2 months after Houdini and Illusion would be a single dropped on the same day as the album release.

My issue is that i barely heard about this album. Not a dua stan but liked the singles from Future Nostalgia. It like, i heard that Training Season sounded like another song. I saw a tiktok about Houdini but thats really it. I saw Illusion on Pelaton. It was like no marketing from Dua Lipa compared to Dance The Night or Future Nostalgia singles. I didnt even now that Illusion existed and definitely didnt now that it was the third single. 😅

Yes!! I've been thinking this for a while. Dance The Night was so big that it kind of oversaturated Dua's presence in music, we really had no time to miss her. I think she did release the singles and the album too early as well, but I guess she wanted to have new music out in time for her Glastonbury performance

I personally really love the album to me. It was one of my top played of last year and I think this whole comparing artist to their previous work and having heightened expectations of them is wrong, but it makes sense I hope that she's not an artist that's after success purely, and is gonna be a lasting artist that just gives us different eras

I read somewhere that training season was supposed to be the actual lead single of RO with a kinda ‘war’ video, but everything was scrapped due to the israel-hamas conflict escalation to avoid controversy. She had then too short time to create a new video for both a new lead single (houdini) and the og, now second, single Training Season.

everything was a mess this era. starting from scrapping her lead single. re shooting the music video for training season, houdini was shot a week before the release date, conflict in aesthetic, warner decided to focus more on charli than Dua. forced hate towards Dua. Dua prioritized tour over promotion, her dad being the manager like wth. it was all over place. Hope she learns from her mistake idk

I was looking forward to her new album, but the songs just didn't do it for me. It's all about the songs. The singles of RO weren't as good or catchy as her previous songs... and too different stylewise. In talkshows she said she wrote more than 100 songs for the album, it's crazy that these were the best songs she wrote since Future Nostalgia.

I'm so over people giving all this praise to Dua Lipa.I think she is so boring. Her music doesn't sound bad at all, but it has no substance. Especially RO. The lyrics are nonsensical and generic. It's like mass market slop. Her music is made for popularity, not quality it feels so corporate and soleless, especially since the execution is so good. And yeah, she's increased her stage presence a lot, but it's still boring to me, sorry. Let go, girl, give us nothing but with more effort. It doesn't feel authentic to her. Who even is she? I feel like she doesn't really have a cohesive identity as a pop star. She's like one step above a faceless radio hit voice. Like those girls who have billions of listens on their songs, but no one knows who they are, and they don't have any stans.

Then you clearly have not paid much attention to her at all and only calling her out based on the minimal things you’ve seen. Dua’s new album is experimental and melodramatic with coherent lyrics and emotion put into it. Dua puts in work with every album, every performance, and every song, and it’s so clear that you fail to see it. When looking at main popstars, like taylor or ariana, I highly doubt you can categorize Dua with them and I would say that’s how she stands out already. Dua’s stage presence is soo good and much more effort put into it, Houdini’s mv is literally a dance studio and performance. Like sure, you can say during her first album we didn’t know who she was. But with the following of future nostalgia, it’s obvious that she has a disco, groovy kind of taste in her music mixed in with her dancing. And nonsensical lyrics…clearly haven’t listened to maria or these walls. And generic, yeah in the end she’s still pop of course it’ll be generic but so what, every pop star still has their own distinct essence in it and dua has one as well. Who is she you ask? You ask this but never put in the time to actually get to know her at all, nor dig deep enough to figure it out yourself.

This whole paragraph, shows that you do not know Dua is inspired by artists like Katy Perry and Gwen Stefani, the whole point you are trying to prove is that she doesn't write deep lyrics, when you start comparing her artistry with" those artists you have in mind",(I don't want to mention their names",when you come to acknowledge this then, you may appreciate her artistry.

@mysteriousdora6914 she doesn't do anything we haven't seen before at a level above average. I think what her management has said about her career says it best. They just want her to do numbers. She doesn't really have a lot of cultural impact. Maybe some songs off of future nostalgia but not her brand. And because I have lukewarm feelings towards her.I'm not really gonna listen to her new project. Why would I? I heard the singles and I don't think that the production quality is bad. It's just that it is soulless radio fodder. It's not really deeper music. You can connect to on a deeper level. Her voice isn't anything special. Her performance isn't anything special. Her appearance/branding isn't anything special. It just is so apparent that this was created by a group of people in a boardroom, and so are all pop artists, but I feel like someone like sabrina carpenter does it really well, Dua doesn't seem to have much personality in anything she does. Sorry if she's your fave and you disagree. But she's not and has never been doing anything special.

@@CraigAlfred-v5iit's not about the lyrics. It's about the storytelling of the song like you can have really shiloh.Lyrics, it's just all about how you write them. Wap is a really creative song doesn't matter hyper sexual and nasty. I haven't listened to the whole album granted. But the newer stuff I think, is worse where I don't even know what the fuck she's talking about. It's just like some generic bullshit about love, I guess? Like there's no reason for the lyrics. They seem like they're written by chatgpt. Also it's always the same damn theme. No range. With anything.
