In the trade we as electricians have a saying. Treat every conductor like it's live, and you'll stay alive. Worth noting that whenever a white conductor is repurposed as an ungrounded conductor including b not limited to circuits supplying only line to line loads, as the supply to a switch in switch loop wiring and certain 3 and 4 way switch wiring configurations, the white should have been re-identified as such, with paint, tape or other approved means in colors other than white, gray or green. Black or red electrical tape is a very common method at my place of employment.

code requires the white be marked with red or black tape/heatshrink all 360° some forget though, most often I see retrofitted HVAC circuits not correctly labeled in my experience
