C curve is the standard for house in France, maybe because in France a ground fault is limited by the ground rod (TT) while in Britain or US it's more like a direct short with the TN system. And all installation have a sealed device that is a 500 ma RCD + breaker installed by the public grid after the meter. This device is delayed to allow downstream RCD to trip and clear the fault on the circuit without an house blackout. Even if it's capable to trip for over amping as the smart meter include a switch that kill the power if you go over your subscription, it's more a redundancy, and if the breaker fail there is "plain good old fuses" sealed too before the meter. Fuses may look dumb but they just can't fail to cut the circuit at last resort !

They work by heating up. A resistor can be used for both AC and DC.
