I watch a lot of MMA, but not much wrestling and when I heard that Japan won 8 golds I actually didn't believe it lol I always assume the US and Russia are going to win. Great breakdown!

Japan is #3 all time in Olympic freestyle medals and #3 all time freestyle golds. They've been dominant for decades. As a former wrestler, I've always known how tough they were, so it didn't really surprise me. What's as impressive is that they're still the #1 nation in Judo by far. And if you ask Khabib, Judo is a tougher sport to medal in than wrestling because there are more people doing Judo. I guess you only watch the UFC, bc there are a hell of a lot of Japanese talent (both mma and kickboxing) at the ONE fighting championship.

so it seems like japan is actually adapting their style to what works at the highest level. All of japans athletes are developing their styles based on what works instead of what worked for them when they were in college. the individuality of americas program seems to be a weakness

America has always been very unique with their wrestling training and S&C. If you look at every other elite country, they focus way more on fundamentals and technique. I always thought the right way to train is the russian/eastern block way as they develop way more elite wrestlers by numbers. America most of the wrestlers are trash. But the very top 1% are elite because they're just freaks.
