i prefer the other side of the coin. its not so much Moiraine agency, its the lack of agency for everyone else. when people make their own decisions, matt and taking things, they go horribly wrong so it helps build a sense of power for Moiraine that regardless of her intentions she knows the right thing to do and the more times it happens the more dependent the others are on her.

I loved that you hit on some of the area's that other people tend to ignore with Moiraine with the distrust and the level of control that she tries to maintain, but with that said you comment that she has less character development then other's and I disagree. Her path from forcibly leading the group and trying to play puppet master with Rand in Tear to finally realizing that what she needs to be is his advisor and give up that personal control is an incredibly important development. You say that she's never truly wrong but every plan she put forward going to the tower, having Rand take the horn to Illian, invade Illian all of these were doomed to failure. Also something that lends to that feeling of distrust for the reader and for Rand was that until after book 4 she was always prepared to kill Rand if she thought it was necessary and was always watching him for signs of being influenced by the shadow, making her one of the most dangerous threats Rand dealt with in the early books.

I also disagreed with this, but understand what Daniel is saying too. I think her developement, is a bit different than we are often used to. She has so much 'screen' time (you know what I mean), that we were constantly getting character development from her action and speech. In fact, my last reread partially focused on the scenes RJ used her in, and honestly think RJ purposefully tried to focus on her under varying situations to show us more. To me this works because the story is so darn huge. Expecting to develop a character using her words/actions ends up with a flat character imo.

The defining moment for me (where I decided I trusted Moraine as a character) was the story of Manetheren she told. I'm not sure how that can be done to be as impactful as it was in the books, but it is something I'd like to see in the early part of the first season!

I gotta agree with you. She's an untrusted stranger to these villagers that rarely even travel to their next village. Then they find out that she's an Aes Sedai and they're known to be in league with evil and that doubles down the distrust. But they need her in order to be safe. She, on the other hand, is wise and worldly tasked with a secret mission. She doesn't need some willful, ignorant villagers (country bumpkins) jeopardizing the fate of the world and doesn't need their permission since she knows so much more than them. She an Lan are the Marine rescue squad while the kids are the damsel in distress. She needs to be in control while they do what she says, when she says it.

I think one of the things she should be is become the baseline for how an Aes Sedai is for the audience so that when the audiences is introduced to others they can see how she's similar and different. So she needs to be front and center for most of the early parts, she's the resident cat herder who doesn't have time to chitchat about any specifics. The audience should get the sense she knows more than she is letting on. One of the important aspects of Moiraine is that she's been on this mission for the entirety of Rands life, as one of only two who know for certain that The Dragon is reborn. She's been keeping secrets and she is used to that and she's also afraid what would happen if Rand knows too much so she can't say everything with the fear that he won't do what he has to do. One of the most important aspects for Moiraine as a charcater is that she has to transform from a person who thinks she can guide/direct/control the pattern to understanding that she's just another thread in the weave and the weave has things in hand, Rand will be pulled to where he has to be by intuition of compulsion. That's also one of the defining differences between her and the Amyrlin which has to be made clear as well. When she realises that Siuan has become biased just by being in the tower she understands that she's really the only one on that mission to get Rand to the place where he can save the world.

I think what makes Moiraine stand out positively among Aes Sedai is that she goes in thinking she knows best, but over the course of her story she figures out how much she doesn't know and acts accordingly. Most other Aes Sedai in the series don't just get it wrong because of things they don't know, but because they assume they know everything. Basically, it's the difference between wisdom and arrogance.

I feel as though she is most important early on, and less so as the story progresses. In the beginning, she is there to push and shove the characters toward good decisions, whereas later on, she is there only to provide a gentle nudge in the right direction. So for me, it is most important that they nail the first season with her character. When she says something along the lines of "Follow me and let me keep you from the Dark One's grasp, or, and know I am not lying, I will destroy you" (grimly misquoted). If that doesn't send shivers down my spine, they won't have nailed her.

Yes, yes, YES!!!! I agree with 95% of what you said there, Daniel. Moiraine should be someone that the viewers don't trust immediately. She is flat out scary for many of the initial moments of the Wheel of Time. Where we break is your seeming to forget about all the mistakes Moiraine makes later in the books. Her secretiveness and unwillingness to deal with Rand as a person instead of just a 'sentient thermonuclear bomb' drives him to run from her after The Great Hunt. Later, after she helps Rand take Tear, she is all gung ho for Rand to start a war with Illian. She is flat out wrong and had Rand listened to her, the Wheel of Time would have ended a lot sooner and a lot worse. I see Moiraine as at least a bit of a blood knight in her determination to complete her quest. Sure, she has some compassion and isn't bloodthirsty, but she also doesn't care who she has to step on to complete her mission. It takes a while to know for certain that her mission is one where we should be rooting for her. Great video, Daniel. Really hope that Rosamund Pike either watches or comes to the same conclusions on her own.

I'm unsure of how they will portray the "agelessness" aspect of the Aes Sedai...as far as Moiraine, the music is going to have to be really helpful for "presence" whether it's power, confidence or intimidation. I can't wait for this series. Prepare for the worst and all surprises will be pleasant.

I didn’t have the hesitancy to trust Moiraine thing when reading Eye of the World. In fact I got extremely frustrated with the skepticism and sometimes blatant hostility the villagers and especially the boys display towards her. I never did really buy into Moiraine being dark. I think she fills the same space as Gandalf for me, and despite her being noticeably less pleasant than Gandalf, I kind of initially placed my trust in her and insisted on an innocent until guilty mindset.

Moiraine is absolutely the rock the early story needs to be built upon. I like your take. She also provides a great measuring stick for how Nynaeve grows. The dynamic between those two in Two Rivers does a lot to set the stage for how both characters evolve throughout the series. I’m excited to see how it all plays out!

I personally would love to see some ‘flashbacks’ detailing Moiraine’s relationships with Lan and Siuan and how they develop. I wouldn’t want it to ruin the questions of the eye of the world, I agree that shrouding her in mystery is key to that book. Perhaps a single ep, (second season maybe?) that’s just focused on her New Spring story and jumps us out of the main show/book storyline for a hot second. For me, New Spring really nailed home the strength and determination of Moiraine and made me better understand and admire her motivations as the character we were introduced to initially.

I pretty much agree with the way you portrait moiraine and her character in the video, but i've been thinking for a while now, that with those rumors about the series making her the protagonist, at least in season one, part of that distrust and mistery surrounding her will be traded for the "discovery of the dragon Reborn". I mean, in the books we, as readers, never really have the same doubts the characters have about who of the three farming boys there really is the Dragon. Hell, the first Rand's chapter is right next to the prologue with Lews Therin. That's was always one of my complains about 'Eye of the world', i can't see how even a newcommer to the fantasy genre could think that Mat or Perrin have some chance of been the Dragon, even with all the Ta'veren thing going on. Besides that the whole thing about the distrust in moiraine is, in some points, very sutile, i myself don't get all of that in my first reading, it's more an aura of her character, and requires certain familiarity with the setting to really comprehend. I can see a tv series that want to appeal for as many peaple as GoT did, trading a character centered mistery, and a relatively hard to deliver to the public, for a more season-spread and easy to follow doubt that finish delivering for the sake of that Grandious moment of discovery, excitmment and Apotheosis at the end of Season one.

Best metaphor I can come up with on the fly for Moiraine in EoTW is that she is a light in the dark, that light protects you from the things that stalk the shadows, but at one point you get close enough to the light to see that she’s also something to be feared or at least mistrusted

I actually was never suspicious of her when I first read the series - I think I was just young and naive and I would get so frustrated that the boys didn’t trust her 😂😂 but I agree that she was meant to be mysterious to the reader.

Why I really like Rosamund Pike is that she has shown in particularly Gone Girl that she can portray intimidation really well, and this will be key. Moiraine needs to be intimidating, yet not by her magic or actions, but by manners, looks and words. A key here will be her relationship with Lan. The chemistry and writing between these two characters have to be super on-point. By showing both their bond as well as Lan's sometimes defiance will help to create some unease around her.

I think when she kills Be'lal she became actually confident. At least to the audience. It's like being with someone who has all the confidence and demeanor that they are a badass...and then they finally prove it...in a HUGE way. I'm not saying her confidence was only a front onto that point, but it was validated at that moment. I think it is one of the more underrated scenes in WOT and can't wait for it to be shown on screen. And with Rafe already saying he loves Moraine...I'm hoping it is EPIC! I agree! I think that how they should make us understand Moiraine´s motives and drive should never be between conversations with the Two Rivers crew, it should only ever be shown as conversation with Lan and later Siuan. Moiraine should never be shown to take a backseat to Rand as the Leader for us the viewer. Not even when she does step back a bit. That should be portrayed as she is still in control, but giving Rand more line to wiggle about in crazy business. If doing this correctly the Door Frame Incident "DFI" will be a major major MAJOR shock and impact on the viewer. We will feel the shock of loss as Rand and the rest did. And just then will everyone realize how uterliy important Moiraine was and it will really have us "the viewer" understand Mat, Perrin and Rand and Egwene and Nynaeve and the struggles they are left with, now that the leader is not present anymore. Sorry for spelling/grammar.

Rand does not BEGIN his story without her. Rand does not WIN without her in the end. She should be missed when she is gone. They should reference this missing presence often as Rand struggles thru the prophesy without her. She IS the wheel. Without her, Rand is a madman and the wheel is broken.

I also pronounce it mwah-rain rather than more-rain. The Cairhienin are supposed to be French inspired, so I imagine pronunciation of Cairhienin names would be similar to French pronunciation. Plus a moraine is a geological feature.

I started the books more than a couple decades ago and had to wait for each book to come out starting with The Shadow Rising I think but do not recall liking Moraine much or empathizing with her. Siuan and Leane stood out more for me along with some other Aes Sedai but I may need to reread the books to see if my memory is off.

Thank you so much Daniel, You are the most accurate commenter on RJ books. YES Moiraine should be all she was in RJ Original series as she is the main character (She was never Gay she was not involved with Syhuan or Lan sexually). She was in love with Merrilin but couldn't pursue the relationship because of her TOP SECRET assignment & the Ward AesSedai bond (she shared with Lan, they both would feel what each other was doing) it is also why Lan didnt get involved with Nynaeve until Moiraine got lost inside the dark MIRROR, and they thought Moiraine died trapped in the mirror. It is also where Mat lost his eye trying to save her while helping Merrilin rescue her from the dark world inside the Mirror... Whomever is rewriting Jordan's Epic Story is ruining it by turning it into ( a 90210) teenage melodrama)... Once again you are correct Daniel, Moiraine was very strict when keeping her emotions to herself because she was highly trained as a warrior in her role. Not to be worried or Jealous if SYHUAN SANCHE pays her any attention. MOIRAINE WAS NEVER INSECURE.... And Syhuan Sanche was in love with her General not with Moiraine. Jordan's story is Medieval about saving the world from darkness... Not a modern teenage hormonal melodrama... In the wheel of time it is easy to recognize an AesSedai because they don't look older than 30 years of age. The character chosen to portray Moiraine is an excellent actress except she looks like a beautiful 50 year old. Not what an AesSedai from Robert Jordan's books look like.

Wheel of Time: Main characters involved & roles played, In the books written by Robert Jordan. In the wheel of time it is easy to recognize an AesSedai because they don't look older than 30 years of age. The character chosen to portray Moiraine is an excellent actress except she looks like a beautiful 50 year old. Not what an AesSedai from Robert Jordan's books look like. 1; Rand & Egwene never have sex, they were promised to each other by their parents, but the "patern" led them to separate ways & roles so they never had a chance to be together and later got involved with their respective partners. 2; Egwene falls in love with the brothers prince Galad & prince Gawin, but only has sex with Gawin in the Dreamworld. Never physical though. 3; Rand/Lews Therin, falls in love with: a; Princess Elaine Trakand, "Ilyena-wife" b; Aviendah (from the Aiel) c; Min the seer from the bar. d; all 3 have Rand's baby's, e; all three bond into sister wives, f; because of the bond all 4 share erotic sensations, all 3 girls feel when Rand is with each of them sexually. 4; Rand keeps his three wives Elaine, Min & Avienda, which all get pregnant from him, Elaine, Min, Avienda bond each other into sister wives. 5; Note! You cannot combine Mat or Perrin into Rand because they were different characters that worked together against the dark one in the past life. a; (Rand, Mat & Perrin), are needed because they all have different roles & abilities from past Lives. b; All three worked together against the dark one it is why they are tied as tavereen. 6; Mat marries Tuon a Seanchan warrior princess, a; which then helps Mat win his battles, b; Adding his past life memories of being a famous leader & strategist in war battles. c; ; Mat is also the one that finds the horn of Valeere to wake up the dead army that also helps in the last battle. 8; Perrin also marries a Warrior Princess. a; Perrin develops a strong bond with his wolf's which help him in the last battle. b; Perrin develops a strong bond with Elias a wolf man that becomes Perrin's Mentor to understand the wolf realm. 9; Egwene never has physical sex with Rand, a;Egwene wouldn't have anyone's baby because (she only had sex in the Dreamworld with Gawin). b; Egwene was always very shy & one of her main abilities was she could travel anywhere in the Dreamworld. c; In the Dreamworld there is nothing holding her back and she thinks having sex is only a dream later finding out it was real. d; Gawin dies trying to save Egwene e; Galad dies trying to kill the dark one in revenge for Gawins death. f; Because Gawin is Egwene's personal warder the loss of his death is unbearable. g; Egwene in a thirst for revenge over Gawins death and wanting to save the world uses a saangreal to multiply her power and obliterates all the Trolocks & Fades. h; (Egween burns herself to a crisp using the one power to it's full potential). i; Egwene actually dies a virgin. (as she only has sex in the Dreamworld with Gawin). 10; Most of Rand's memories are of killing "Elaine" and her baby... (Not Egwene) 11; Never about killing "Egwene" because Egwene was never Rands wife or mate in his past life or present for that matter. 12; Egwene was also adopted by the Aiel Wisdoms and is where they further trained her to eventually be the next Amerlyn Seat. 13; Egwene then has to battle the dark friend they put in Siwan's place as Amerlyn seat for the position. 14; So they all have a role to play because they were all together in the past life. 15; Moiraine never has sex with Siwan, they were only best friends, and Siwan falls in love with the General of her army at the time when she is Stilled. 16; Moiraine never has sex with Lan, their bond is only (warder body guard bond), and because Moiraine is secretly in love with Merrilin. 17; Ninaeve and Lan cannot have sex until much later when they think Moiraine is dead, then Ninaeve bonds Lan as her warder and finally unite as a couple 18; Because of the bond Moiraine & Lan share it is impossible for (Ninaeve & Lan) - (Moiraine & Merrillin) to be together. "Ward & AesSedai feel each others emotions" Consequently knowing whom each other are with etc etc. a; until Moiraine is lost in the death world by accident and the bond is severed. b; it is when Ninaeve & Lan finally are able to bond and be together. c; Merrilin gets a secret note from Moiraine to rescue her from the dark realm with the help of Mat and is where Mat loses an eye battling demons while helping Merrilin rescue Moiraine... d; Later Merrilin is able to rescue Moiraine from the dark realm and they are also able to bond and be together because they have had a secret romantic connection from the beginning. c; It is Mirelle that has sex with all her warders and marries two of them. 19; Logain (the false Dragon) helps Rand in the last battle. Logain & some of his men also bond the Red AesSedai as warders so the Reds feel and see the irresistible pull to obey. 21; Rand & Ninaeve join forces at the top of Dragonmount against the dark one. 22; the reason everyone thinks Rand dies in the last battle is because Rand's body dies but Rand is able to switch his mind with the dark one and is able to trap and seal the dark one back in his prison. The only ones that know of this are Rand's three wives because of the bond they share, & probably Nynaeve. 23; After Moiraine and Merillyn get together, Syhuan and the General get together, and because Egwene dies leaving the Amerlyn seat position available it is assumed the Green Cadsuane takes the position.

I like Rosamund Pike as Moiraine. Not spot on for looks but if you get get caught up on that then you're in trouble for about character anyway, but her voice in her famous Cool Girl monologue from Gone Girl, her acting ability and intensity have me extremely interested in what Amazon is doing.

That was great timing, now that Moiraine's casting has been officially announced. I completely agree. And this is the reason I'm a little apprehensive about the direction the show may take by making Moiraine the lead character. By doing so, they take away a lot of that mystery and suspicion that surrounds her.

I do understand that fear. I have it myself a bit. I just also think that the main 3 are faaaar too boring and generic to be good main characters for the first book. After they start on their paths at various times in this book and the next, the boys become far more interesting.

SPOILERS!!! I agree with everything you just said. When i come to fantasy Characters Moiraine is the one i feel the most emotion towards. I have listened to the audio books probably 12 times now and the moment she and Rand are Reunited on the field of maralore I loose it. I wouldn't feel so strongly about her if I didn't feel such a mix bag of emotions towards her in the beginning.

I enjoyed Moiraine as a character in the first few books. But only really liked her when her doubts mounted, and she saw a certain doorway in her future.

Dude, I saw this AFTER they announced the casting for Moiraine. What are you thoughts on that? Also, kickass vid. Please do one on Thom and Perrin. They are my personal favorites in the series and I feel that like Moiraine, miss steps in casting them and how they act can also derail the show.
