I haven’t eaten processed food for many many years. I ate primarily organic whole vegetables and had progressive muscle wasting, weakness, and finally osteoporosis. I now eat carnivore-ketocovore and am finally building strength and muscle. Animal protein and fats were vital to reclaiming my health. Even “healthy” carbs create inflammation for me

I was at the beach on Cozumel a week ago and the place was full of obese sunbathers, mostly Americans coming off the cruise ships. They were busy drinking and eating and a few actually ventured into the water when they weren't lounging and consuming. The extreme obesity was shocking even though I've seen it a million times, and most of these people are relative youngsters.

Loss of culinary skills and unwillingness to home prepare batch meals weekly has resulted in a default to restaurant foods and ultra processed (convenient) consumer packaged foods. The willingness to pay for convenience rather than wise choices (with a personal time commitment) ends up sacrificing our health for profits of food manufacturers. Food scientists and food engineers are paid to make foods very appealing even if it has long term health consequences. Added sugar, low quality oils and high carbs make many manufactured foods very tempting from a sensory perspective. Companies like to put the onus to resist temptation back on consumers.

That’s both true and isn’t. My mother-in-law was food service manager for the school system in which we lived. Whenever she started at a different school, she had a “tasting day” each week for a different food. She would make 1/2 of the food according to the “official” school recipe and the other 1/2 according to her own, adding spices or other common ingredients that make food less bland (salt, pepper, parsley, chives, a gravy/sauce…) The office would announce the tasting and encourage students to vote for the version they liked better. Kids loved that they had a say, scoring the foods from 1-5. They could also add comments to the back of the voting card. My m-i-l couldn’t change the menu, as that was determined by the school district, but she did make it more palatable. Very little was thrown out. She eventually was on the committee that chose the menus and was able to get rid of some items that kids didn’t like no matter how improved. Kids like pizza and burgers because it’s hard to wreck them.

I wouldn’t fluff off the food dye issue nor the fluoride issue so casually. One, most food dyes cause endocrine disruptions which screw up hormone production. They also deplete minerals and cause gut microbiome problems. Combine that with a lack of proper dietary fats and you will have kids unable to produce enough hormones especially when they reach puberty. Think about that for a few minutes and hypothesize what that really could do to a child’s development and identity. 🧐 And btw… think about pregnant mothers who could ingest a myriad of food dyes as well. These shit products can pass through the blood brain barrier in utero. Two, the fluoride picture needs to be completed. It’s not just the fluoride but what it does in the body. It can deplete calcium and magnesium. Increase potassium. Cause weakened bones.. think osteoporosis. Certainly screws up your thyroid/parathyroid glands … think obesity. And worst problem of fluoride is for children as it depletes iodine from their bodies. Iodine may be a micronutrient but it is crucial for brain development and IQ potential. Less iodine leads to a lower IQ … by 7-15 points from what I’ve read. Next time some dentist says anything about fluoride being in the water, ask them this…. Do you think fluoride is safer ingested or topically applied to teeth for protection? Lastly, do not think fluoride in municipal water is the sole source of the problem. Fluoride is in groundwater around the country at different levels. Here in NH it is common in dug and drilled wells. Also different types of mining cause it to get into water sources too. Btw… our top soils are depleted of iodine from our current farming practices. Iodized salt is not enough to help. I’d like to see RFK Jr get in and tackle this problem. I’m not sure he will be allowed to focus on enough of the problems to get anything accomplished. The Orange boss needs his uneducated followers and a lower IQ helps that cause. 🤦🏼🙄

There are some who suggest that high carb diets may be a contributing factor in Bipolar disorder. Though this isn’t a proven theory, there may be some truth to it. The numbers of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder has increased exponentially it seems with the increase of carbohydrates disguised as food in our western diet. Especially the highly processed junk. Of course, there may be a genetic disposition in some people that magnifies the problem when bad food is consumed as well.

I grew up in the 70's-80's in a small town of 4000. All of us ate basically the same thing even at our homes. My mother was a serious advocate against buying soda, chips or candy bars(chocolate). She cooked real food....like roasted chicken, potatoes and veggies. Roast beef, moose, fish etc. I had a weight problem as a kid. Then as a teen, then as an adult. I do think morbid obesity is a bit more nuanced than just processed food. I rode my bike to and from school (nearly 1mile). As teens we walked everywhere on the weekends. I do think there needs to be REAL studies. I would love to see a Wellness centre devoted to strenuous testing of blood, urine etc on morbidly obese youth, coupled by psychological assessments as well for 6 month stay program. Everyone in government have millions to throw around, how about investing in these young people. Also, no tv, devices or movies during the 6 months.

I disagree that the number one cause of obesity and illness is highly processed or "junk" food. That implies that if you eat foods that have not been processed, and are "natural", you will be healthy. The reality is a much simpler answer: the number one cause of obesity and illness is the over consumption of carbohydrates, of ANY kind from ANY source, be it natural or processed. This leads to hyperinsulinemia which leads to metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, which then leads to obesity and chronic disease. Not even RFK Jr. is talking about this in a way that would significantly change the current recommended food pyramid.

When has RFK Jr. stated that the key to fixing the obesity and chronic illness epidemic in the West is eliminating carbohydrates in favor of a keto or carnivore lifestyle? Instead he focuses on the processed food and pharmaceutical industries. Please include a link to any discussion he's had on this topic that focuses on hyperinsulinemia and ditching practically ALL carbohydrates in favor of a high animal sourced saturated fat and moderate to high animal based protein diet. Agree with everything here except your statement (07:30) "Most Doctors don't know that". I'm convinced most Doctors ARE completely aware of the impact of poor diet on health / chronic disease. The problem is their sheer workload treating the outcomes of poor education, lifestyle and (ageing) population numbers. Here in the UK they are forced to "rattle through" their list of consultations...to follow (often very limited) clinical guidelines...to write prescriptions...and then shout "next patient please"! It's not "their fault" and they do great things in terms of controlling disease and human suffering. It's not going to be easy to reset the emphasis on prevention rather than chronic treatment. And it will cost!

I was a soft drink addict, but decided in 2016 to give them all up, including the diet variations, and within 4 months, I lost 16 kg! That loss stabilized the following year. To this date, I've had none of those drinks since. The only non processed foods one finds in the store will be fresh fruits and vegetables. Read the label of any packaged offers and there's a list of all the additives included. The FDA approved additives is a listing of some 10,000+ in the US compared to the EU's list of 400. I gave up all processed foods in 2023, vowed never to buy any again. I cook fresh daily, have some 30+ breads & co I bake myself, which are tasty, not bland & full of additives. If my bread like items are not eaten in 3 days, they're hard as a rock. When people visit Europe, they discover how good food really tastes. I would say that all of my friends also cook daily and stay away from processed foods, including your chips, sauces, sausages, eve vegan spinnoffs. Read the labels, surprise yourself.

These sugars, or components of sugar, are allowed into foods without disclosure as long as it is less than a certain amount but there’s no limit to how many of these sugars can be used, at that amount, in one food. Since people have been told carbohydrates are okay they don’t even look at the sugars or know what to look for.

It really is not complicated. Avoid carbs and seed oils is the crux of the matter. Eat the grocery store edges with meat the main food, followed by, if you absolutely think you cannot live without vegetables, fresh vegetables and lastly, dairy and fruits. People really make it far too complicated. I, a former sugar/carb addict, eat 99% meat and eggs from my own free range chickens, a little dairy, no sugar or seed oils for the past few years. I am 68 years old and only take one medication for my 25 year long hypothyroidism. I've lost not only 60 lbs back to my 17 yr old, below my pre-thyroid-malfunction weight, but no longer have dry eyes, most digestive issues unless I overdo the fat, migraines, muscle cramps, etc. I wonder if I had gotten this message sooner, if I would have avoided a hysterectomy due to endometriosis and and gallstones. No use looking backward, though. The sad truth is that most disease is self-inflicted, whether the person knows it or not. We have to eradicate the ignorance about this entire subject. Thanks, Dr. Westman. ~Cynthia

There are VERY simple things everyone can do when shopping for food. If we stay out of the middle aisles and just get meats, seafood, fish, eggs, cheese and vegetables, with perhaps a small amount of whole fruits, our children could thrive, but most of those foods require preparation. The foods they are talking about in this video are cheap and ready to eat. Families in which both parents have to work just to keep up with rent, utilities, transportation and food are in a bind. They can get a meal for everyone including the exhausted parents at a fast food restaurant for an extremely low price. It is not SNAP that is the problem, it is poverty itself. Why should people have to work at jobs that do not pay a living wage?
