A friend decided to start keto for weight loss, and it took me a few weeks to realise I should have warned her that if she was on blood pressure medication, that she might get too low blood pressure with keto. So I called her, and it turned out that she was on the medication, but said she had already noticed the low blood pressure, and stopped her medication (she's a retired nurse). Please clarify.....the salt should not be table salt! Celtic salt has lots of minerals...a few grains under the tongue and drinking water is appropriate....we need salt as we are electrical circuits in our bodies and our hearts need this to work correctly, right? Also having the salt when drinking the water allows the water to enter the cell instead of peeing it out through the kidneys.

Whether expensive specialty salt or cheap table salt, they all are 98% NaCl (sodium chloride). The hype over Celtic salt or pink salt is just good marketing without science behind it. Oh, but what about all the minerals? There are “trace” minerals, meaning so little as to be negligible. If you really think the minerals are beneficial, then you also need to consider the trace elements in specialty salts such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, uranium and aluminum!

@@gsts379 I'll agree with you for the most part. I purposely just avoid the standard table salt and standard sea salt because I just don't trust them. I'm not against using them for whatever reason but if choices are available I'll use something else. Yeah a lot of this stuff especially Redmond is marketing and gimmicks. I bought and used two whole bags of Redmond and it's nothing special it's just salt (if anything just one of the few cleaner options) there's nothing about it that made me go wow. This might sound crazy but if you use Redmond salt and swear by it the reality is your body needs it and the taste is a reflection and signal via taste buds that the body wants this.

I hate only meat, fish, eggs, butter, coffee for 7 years. My blood pressure was always around 135/80....A year ago i increased my Celtic salt intake to a teaspoon and a half everyday. In three months my blood pressure dropped to a constant 120/70. Nothing else was changed in my diet. So for me I was not getting enough salt.....Maybe I am unusual but I don't think so....In 2016 Tel Aviv University in Israel conducted a study of 500,000 patients in 49 countries. It was the largest study ever done on high blood pressure. They found that the individuals who consumed the most salt every day had the best blood pressure readings. And the most normal blood pressure readings. And all the individuals who consumed three times the FDA recommended daily dose had way better blood pressure readings than the people who took the FDA recommended amount. They published these results n the Lancet medical journal in the UK that the more salt someone consumes the better their blood pressure is and the lower their chances for stroke and heart attack become. The American heart association threatened the Lancet and told them if they didn't pull that article and retract it they would pull their funding. They threatened the Lancet and told them we will pull all your funding if you publish that study. The question I ask myself is why would the American heart association be angry at a medical journey for publishing a study? Now 90% of the American heart associations funding comes from the pharmaceutical industry that make billions from selling high blood pressure drugs. This can all be researched by anyone. These are the headlines from the Independent News article: "Lancet attacked for publishing study claiming low-salt diet could kill you" I guess we have to make up our own minds but it worked for me and lowered my blood pressure. Is it a conspiracy? I don't care....

Dr. Fung (and Prof. Ben Bikman) does talk about hyperinsulinemia, and how it causes renal sodium retention, thus high blood pressure. Reducing carbs and fasting does heal hyperinsulinemia after a few months, and this also automatically and sustainably reduces blood pressure. Been there, done that, and still astonished how effective this was. I even had to _increase_ sodium intake from an already moderate level after going keto, to prevent BP from going too low.

No mention of Potassium? It is not about too much salt or not enough salt. It is all about the balance of potassium and salt. The body retains salt whereas it cannot retain potassium. So the doctors advise to lower salt whereas they should be advising to increase potassium. This has something to do with the sodium-potassium pump which every cell in the body has. The potassium is inside the cell and sodium is outside the cell and this facilitates an electric charge between them. The body prioritises potassium for the blood, so a blood test will not show up deficiencies of potassium inside the cells. I think that insulin resistance is an important piece of the puzzle also as processed carbs also leach out the potassium and no doubt the insulin is telling the kidneys to retain sodium as Dr Westman pointed out. Dr Berg has a lot to say about the importance of potassium as an electrolyte which is horribly deficient in our population.

@@ernesthader1109 Interesting. Might explain why the carnivore doctors never seem to talk about the need for potassium. I've heard Dr. Chafee say that all these RDA's eg. Vit C have been formulated for the SAD diet and are all naturally adjusted for a carnivore / clean keto diet. So maybe a primal diet brings down blood pressure naturally also if the potassium requirement is dramatically reduced due to the low carb intake.

I have the same. they should never put anyone on medication just for in office readings. the gold standard is home monitoring anyway. My doctor believes me. because I put the data into my smart phone health app and it tracks it over time. I can show exactly what its doing over the previous week, month or any time period, and pinpoint when I see my specialist (200/100. ave readings) hahaha then later at home it's back to 115/75 ish. I had trauma associated with a medical setting I think it's psychological and also I don't trust doctors to listen because my trauma was caused by not listening to me. I now have a decent doctor - I also take a video of my readings on my phone now and then, for evidence. I was prescribed medication by one doctor some years ago, after having three in office high readings and at home I fell over and was so sleepy and got my husband to buy a kit, took my BP and it was 92/64. That's how I know. It's actually not good practice to prescribe meds based on office readings however if you need meds they will prevent stroke /heart attack over time. My normal readings are always never higher than 130/80 ish as soon as I sit down (I take three - as want to know my 'working' BP so always do an immediate one) then the next two after resting are always under 120/80
@kinpatu2 ай бұрын
Similar here but to a lesser extent. Usually 15-20pts of elevation. It’s not all in your head. Some of it is how they rush you onto the table, slip on the cuff, get the reading, enter it into the EMR, and on to the next patient. Under those test conditions, some elevation is expected.

The last comment from the doctor is that carbs cause high blood pressure. I am a vegan, carbs is mostly what I eat, the protein and fats I get come from my food. My blood pressure is high only when I take the stairs at the doctor’s office and they take BP immediately. I told them wait 5 or more minutes. As at home my BP can be as low as 102/69, that it rises to 140/80, is from going up the stairs. At rest, a BP of 102/69 could be lower still, into blacking out when standing. Getting everyone on BP meds maybe good for the doctor’s bottom line, but the patient has to speak up first themselves. No carbs do not cause BP to be high, what does is when fats and cholesterol narrow and line the arteries from a poor diet. My BMI is 21. I am 71 and weigh 121.4 lbs. I wear size 4 jeans. No one considers me fat. I lost 80 lbs. without hunger or cravings with walking 10,000 Steps daily. My biggest regret, so far, in my entire life, is taking blood pressure medication. I was going through a stressful period and suffering from dizzy spells, so the doctor prescribed them to me. He didn't even bring up lifestyle changes or anything. I stupidly took the medication for a little while until my legs were getting super swollen (to the point where I could barely walk anymore). That had NEVER happened to me before, even on long plane trips etc. TL;DR: Two whole years after I stopped taking those pills, my legs STILL swell up regularly. I just happened to go carnivore a little over a year ago (to try and cure my rosacea) and my blood pressure unexpectedly returned to normal within the first week. I feel better than I ever have before! My rosacea isn't gone, but it's more manageable now. But, my legs still swell up almost every other day. No rhyme or reason to it??? I am 100% convinced it's damage from that medication somehow. I even went to a blood vessel specialist a while ago and my veins are perfectly healthy too. They have no idea why it keeps happening. It's uncomfortable and makes it difficult to wear most shoes, but I have kind of given up hope that it'll ever go away completely. :(

If your veins are OK, could this be lymphoedema? I have a faulty lymph gland on the right side, which gives me a swollen right lower leg, foot & ankle and even sometimes swelling above the knee and in the groin. I find regularly wearing compression socks or full length stockings helps, also aerobic exercise to get the circulation going and also specific ankle pumping exercises. I also sleep with my lower legs etc raised. I think having 8+ hours horizontal in bed helps. I massage my legs very lightly in the morning before putting on my compression stockings. (The lymph fluid runs just under the skin, so deep muscle massage is not appropriate.) I have seen it recommended to lie flat, legs raised for 30minutes x 3 times daily, but I don't think this is practical. Honestly, I am never sure how swollen my leg will be, even if I manage to do everything right, which is by no means always the case. I sometimes think my leg is worse in warmer conditions, but I'm not sure. There are lots of videos on KZbin you can watch about coping with lymphoedema. No-one knows WHY it happens - and in my case, WHY on just my right side.

IIRC, the 'Montreal' study endpoint looked at the All Cause Mortality of approximately100,000 people over 10 years according to their salt intake as inferred from regular testing of the salt in their urine. This observational study identified a J-shaped curve from the data, with mortality decreasing with increasing salt intake to a minimum at an intake of about 5000 mg of Sodium (ie not including the MW of Chlorine) and then rose from there with increasing salt intake. While salt is present in all fluids in the body, there is no storage repository, in contrast to the glycogen storage of polymerized glucose in the liver and muscles. Osmotic pressure differentials will rapidly bring salt concentrations into balance except where sodium 'pump' mechanisms apply. A dietary bolus of salt will raise blood salinity and initially draw water from interstitial fluid. This increases the blood volume and thus blood pressure and triggers signals both of thirst and of urine production. As long as one's kidneys are healthy and one drinks water (or water-based liquid with salinity lower than typical blood salinity), the short term blood pressure effects of consuming 'high-salt' foods should be very short lived.

@@cassieoz1702 I've been on keto for almost 3 years now so the hyperinsulinemia I've discounted as a facror. Salt intake is normal. I do eat some dairy and nuts. I'm more meat heavy these days in my diet. I will continue to experiment and find out myself as my doctors have the faintest idea. They just spit out the same BS they're programmed to say like stop eating salt and take BP meds.
@cassieoz17022 ай бұрын
@jimrutherford2773 why WOULD the docs know? Pre-1980 (when I qualified) high BP was uncommon and mostly due to kidney disease, and salt restriction helps that. Then, as ultraprocessed diets and sugar overload increased, it became common and 'unexplainable' other than the 15%or so that are renal associated or sodium sensitive. The 85% associated with hyperinsulinaemia also improve with salt restriction. If you've excluded the waterlogging of hyperinsulinaemia and have good kidneys, that's by far and away the greatest majority of patients they've ever seen. You say you're salt intake is 'normal' but I have no idea what that means or whether it is optimal for you 🤷♀️

Am seeing that the review of Dr. Fungs position may have come to some faulty conclusions. Dr. West says that salt can raise blood pressure, especially if you are on blood pressure reducing medication ie an artificially reduced BP with most likely salt deprivation. What he should be asking is does adding just salt (not junk food) increase BP in someone who is otherwise healthy. If not, there is no reason to reduce salt in the diet. I know of a lot of healthy people who reduce salt (just like fat) because the medical guidelines say that low fat and low salt promote cardio vascular health. These have both been shown to be faulty premises.

If carbo'hydrate's cause water retention, wouldn't that be systemic? If sugar intake is correlated (I remember if causation was established) with an increase in synovial fluid (leading to joint pain) and sugar is a carbohydrate, wouldn't that also be systemic? If the increase in fluid and/or fluid retention cause inflammation and not just electrolyte imbalance couldn't this raise blood pressure?

BP medication affects different aspects of the kidney's salt retention response. Adding salt stops the kidney's response and lowers blood pressure which is part of the response. Adding potassium to the diet as well as nacl balances this response.

Salts that are pure sodium chloride are salts that have been processed to clean out all the harmful minerals and elements. Regular table salt and kosher salt is clean of these impurities. Companies like Morton are the cleanest because they do not even keep the salt in outside piles, so they cannot absorb harmful elements from the air -- that is kosher salt. So, you want table salt, or kosher salt, and iodized is ok. The pink salt has the most heavy metals, and even includes radioactive elements such as plutonium.

To much salt can raise blood pressure. But if you are eating a reasonable amount of salt (which can be hard to due if you are eating premade foods as they have a lot of salt) it isnt an issue. Just make sure to be aware of what you eat and you will likely be fine. And if you eat a lot of salt, make sure you are getting plenty of potassium. They need to be in balance.

Limiting comments to the 2015 opinion piece cited at 9:10 via the graph. The paper is a weave of selective, largely observational studies . I’m not surprised Dr Fung, an outlier in nephrology and purveyor of mixed info - some truths, many exaggerations, some omissions and misinformation - picked it to highlight and support his narrative. As if excess sodium isn’t a major component of an immense number of CRRAHP (calorie rich, refined and highly processed) foods. Look at the multitude of highly controlled DASH RCTs that controlled for everything but sodium. Look at over 10 RCTs on replacing some sodium salt with potassium salt and the conclusion is fairly clear that sodium is PART of the hypertension story. Of course there are a multitude of other factors from dietary potassium, magnesium, alcohol, smoking, physical activity, insulin sensitivity, sleep quality, body composition etc. But saying adding salt generally lowers blood pressure? Come on Jason. You Fung’d up that one. Notable passage from the paper from which the graph came: “Although most populations around the world had sodium consumption levels in a narrow region from 100-200 mmol (2,300-4,600 mg Na/day), there was an outlier group of primitive tribes that consumed 50 mmol or less per day. A critical conclusion of the study was that those Intersalt populations with very low-sodium intakes appeared to have had low median blood pressures, a low prevalence of hypertension and no increase in blood pressure with age, leading to the conclusion that the low levels of hypertension among these tribes was the exclusive result of low-salt consumption.” It’s notable for the self-evident, but also for the strawman statement that the conclusion was that attribution of lifelong excellent blood pressure was solely due to low sodium. As a past president of the national board of physician nutrition specialists, I don’t know of anyone truly understands Nutrition that believes that and disregards all of the other factors I noted above, among others (genetics). IMO, the paper - largely an opinion piece weaved together by one author in a lower level journal, is bias in a rather embarrassingly obvious way.

There is a big difference between a momentary change versus average change. Adding a dose of sodium should pull water into the blood which will raise blood pressure. But the body will work through it. I think you are talking about a momentary change in BP while Dr. Fung is talking about the average.
