Couldn't agree more with everything you said. Speed is fun and a nice skill to have, but in no way trumps feel. Some of the fastest guitar players I've ever heard do nothing to move me emotionally. I respect their skill and technique but have no desire to listen to it. Nice to have a good mix of both. Like Slash maybe.. He has a bit of speed to his game but his feel is out of this world...

Great comment, Sam. Slow soloing with a lot of emotion beats shredding any day. Using short segments of quick notes to compliment the slow notes works much better than the other way around. . .

Kind of reminds me of the adage "teach a man (person) to fish" blah blah blah.Teach someone how to express through a medium such as guitar, well that just providesall the motivation required to further develop the motor skills.As I recall, my first kiss gave me inspiration! I also learned another way to play with more feeling from this channel and teacher: *grow* a _Mustache_. But it must be a glorious one! When you *have* a _Mustache_ of this kind, you may play through it, and it through you. You will discover that the _Mustache_ is a wellspring for a deep and inexhaustible aquifer of soulful expression. With time and familiarity, instances of drawing from the well will become more frequent, easier to attain, longer in duration, and deeper in feeling. When you *become* the _Mustache_, you no longer need the mustache.

Tone is in the fingers...the gear helps but is less important then you think
@officialmetalwill8 жыл бұрын
You're a total idiot. If tone was in the fingers then there would be no need for different amps, guitars, or effects. Go play a Strat through a Twin, the play an LP through a cranked Marshall - won't sound the same at all. The technique will sound the same, the tone will not. Technique is in the fingers, tone is in your gear.

I've tried and tried to learn to use hand or arm vibrato instead of fingers, with no joy. But my finger vibrato sounds pretty good. The high e tends to slip off the fingerboard, but I've found that just sorta wiggling my finger on the high e (without moving the string) gives a mild but nice vibrato, probably because I use 8 gauge strings and the wiggling is changing pressure on the string. I still have trouble with vibrato on bends, though. Maybe it's my lack of strength. But hey, BB King didn't use vibrato on bends either (or rarely), yet his playing is some of the most sensitive and expressive of anyone. We have to work with our limitations. I'll keep trying, but if I never get it down, no big deal, I'll just work with it. I know many people are gonna think, "8 gauge strings? That is ridonkulous!" And recently I've been tuning a half step down, too, which makes the strings even bendier! But, first of all, I have chronic health issues, with have lots of pain, weakness and tiredness in my fingers and hands (whole body, actually), proneness to injury (even fractures due to osteoporosis... at 49 years old!) and super light strings make it much easier for me to get good bends, as well as needing less pressure to press down. With 10s I can't play for more than a few minutes, and full bends kill me. Even 9s are difficult, though with the Hendrix tuning I might be able to handle them. Secondly, I figured Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top has some of the best tone there is, and he uses 7s. So I don't think string gauge is super important for good tone. Personally, I don't notice the sound being particulary thin or anything. I'm sure if I listened to them side by side with 10s or 11s there would be some difference, though probably not huge, and I might not even like the sound of the heavier strings better. If I needed to I could always up the bottom end gauge a bit. They do challenge you to play with much more precision, as it is easy to accidentally bend a string out of tune, or press down too hard. So it takes a more delicate left hand touch (and you don't want to really hammer down with the right, either). But that has only improved the sensitivity of my playing, especially lead. I've always tended toward a lighter touch anyway, and now I feel like I have much more control, and so can be even more expressive. But until you get the hang of them, it's easier to screw up, too. It's a little like driving a high performance race car. The handling is more sensitve and you have finer control, but that also means you can wreck easier if your driving is not precision enough.
@BrettPapa8 жыл бұрын
I used to use 8's myself and loved them. I actually played Billy's guitar once it was 8's tune down a whole step. Pretty crazy and made those bends a whole lot easier. There are a number of great players who use 8's and have wicked tone Billy, Uli Roth, and Yngwie to name a few. You know the old saying rock what you got.
