I don't understand the notation .8 being 0.8, or, like here in Europe, 0, 8. Very strange to omit the 0.

1.9 The question never ask to give the answer in the form of a fraction. .8 + .5 + .6 = 1.9 No need for a calculator. But if you want to work with fractions I'm OK with that too. ;)

You have a point. It is not easy to find the fraction for 0.7727272727... But there is a way to find 17/22 Same for 0.3888888... (7/18) or 0.81818181... (9/11)

Why convert to fractions? Convert to decimals. I disagree, easier to add decimals.

In a lot of cases it is harder to work with the decimal. In the case of a repeating decimal it adds more error because to work with it you have to truncate it. As for the reduction point an improper fraction is a valid answer and in a problem with multiplication implied, like algebra where variables are involved, it's discouraged to change it from an improper fraction. Cause you can have 7x+7½ and x could be ½... it's just better then to keep the improper fraction or convert to decimal. But any teacher doing algebra will tell you the fraction, even improper, is a valid answer and you can stop there and going further to find the decimal is optional.

@@deraj00 58 years when I was learning fractions, they had to be reduced. 1 4/6 might lose points and 19/10 would be checked wrong.

@tabletclass THIS way of posing a maths problem completely avoids the use of human language, & thus a heck of a lot of LANGUAGE-related (deliberate-or-not) misunderstandings--as I am sure that you were already well aware of. 🙂 "WITHOUT a calculator!"? *Of course!* Hitting the keys requires more time and more energy!

I like to choose fractions as basis: .8 = 4/5 = 8/10 1/2 = 5/10 3/5 = 6/10 So ( 8 + 5 + 6 ) / 10 = 19/10 And that's it !

Much easier to as decimals. No lcd and can just add. No calculator or paper required. You can add in your head. If not easily convertible to decimals then do as fractions.

Well, there are two ways to do this .. 1) Turn them all into decimals 0.8 + 0.5 + 0.6 = 1.9 2) Turn them all into fractions with the LCD being 10 8/10 + 5/10 + 6/10 = 19/10

When I was taught we were not allowed to leave the answer as 19/10. And if toy were using a calculator it would be faster to add as decimal equivalents.
