I used drawer slides (Lee Valley Tools) to make pull out throttle and control panel shelves very similar to this. This shelf would make a great addition to place paperwork and tools. I’m guilty like so many others of leaving tools among the scenery on the layout!

Larry, You didn't mention what brand loco the gear goes into. I have a pkg of Athearn #140-40030 23 tooth gears. They are 12.7 MM (1/2") diameter, with about a 3.7 MM shaft hole (1/8 "), 3.7 MM thick where the shaft goes through and 3 MM thick at the teeth. If this might work for you I'd gladly send you a couple. I have a fair supply of Athearn Blue Box drive parts. Tom

Weve installed 3 of them. Super easy and helpful. Get the good drawer sliders that extend and can support decent weight (75 lbs). Rockler is a great resource.

I was lucky since the fascia shelf sticks out 6” somI don’t have to go in as far under the actual layout. That means I have fewer potential conflicts with switch machines and wiring.

Larry I have a 3D resin printer, I'm in Southwest MN - have not tried printing gears, but happy to try although I suspect the resin I have will be too brittle to work, may need to do some research on alternative resins. I found this video interesting as I have a drop down work bench on the layout and have been thinking for some time I need to change the design to a drawer type as it's a pain to clear it off when I need to get to that area of the layout, if it's on drawer sliders hopefully I can just slide it under.

Spent a couple of hours over the weekend moving the drop-down workbench to an under-layout slider, worked exceptionally well. Thanks for the idea!

Hey Larry. What a great idea thanks. I wondered if you would do a video showing the helix that you built a while back? We saw you build it, but we have not seen it in use. Thanks again Larry.

We’ll get back to it. First I have to build a big bridge to run track to the upper end of the helix. That’s another upcoming video project.

Hi Larry hope your well, Can you tell me if you ever did a video on how to install a progamming track using a nce power cab on DCC,I have to remove ALL loco`s to progamme one loco or can it be done without removing loco`s thank you Brian
@TheDCCGuy2 жыл бұрын
I have done videos on programing tracks as well as on the PowerCab and I am pretty sure I mentioned what you need in one of them. Also, you program on the main just not read back CV values. For a PowerCab service mode programming track you need a completely isolate track and a way to physically switch power from your layout tracks to the programming track. I suggest the Auto-SW made by NCE for this purpose. It will automatically detect programming commands and send them to the programming track for you.

Hi Larry, as ever 3d printing is only part of the issue, using the correct resin and supporting the print along with an excellent scaled stl file are all needed. My name is Timo, I own Blue Tree Models. We are one of the largest 3d hobby print farms in the Uk. If you can get the file to me, I will happily ensure it’s done correctly. We only sell to trade so this is a one off. Happy to help.

I have a 3D printer and have actually made some similar gears for a Hornby loco. Same type of story, split gear and no spares available. I am more than happy to help but I live in Sydney Australia so logistically a little difficult but not impossible.
@TheDCCGuy2 жыл бұрын
This is a Hornby Bulleid West Country Class 4-6-2 made about 15 years ago. It seems that they changed the gears a few years ago and now they say they have lost the old mold so no new parts to be had. How have your 3D gears held up i use and are they noisy as some have suggested they will be? One person told me because of the small size and inaccuracies of printing it is hard to get a 3D part to work well. Right now I can still get a working pre-owned chassis on eBay for about £60 so that may be my only option.
@scotabot78262 жыл бұрын
Great Job!! I like mine at a 24 inch width, as 12 inches is too small for me,
@TheDCCGuy2 жыл бұрын
The great thing is you can customize the width by just cutting the plywood wider. You could also make it deeper using longer slides but there are tradeoffs if you need room for switch machines, etc.

My loco library and college allows the public to print on their 3D printers. Also some UPS stores have 3D printing services. Maybe check out one of those options in your area if you already have the part designed.

@donaldshroyer86332 жыл бұрын
This is a nice project that will provide a useful, retractable work surface. But I just emphasize that my layout's "paperwork" consists of PDF documents displayed as needed on a tablet device. This might need a little different height than for actual paperwork, but seems an easy accommodation. I know some modelers live for it but I just don't think a tree has to die for train operations.
@bobainsworth50572 жыл бұрын
Nice job. Easy install. I noticed your phone system. Will you do a video on that sometime in future?
@TheDCCGuy2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I can do one, but it is complicated and expensive. I wrote a chapter in my book “Wiring Projects For Your Model Railroad” on how to do it but even that doesn’t fill in all the blanks. It basically is a fully functional party line phone system based on telephone company systems. But it sure beats using a walkie talkie with headphones.
@bobainsworth50572 жыл бұрын
@@TheDCCGuy I found if I could find those simple hand sets you can wire them with 9volts ( or maybe 12volts ) and make sound powered phone. Add a buzzer for dispatching to each phone and I've got what I need. I just can't find the original hand sets. Everyone is selling complete phones or "trimline " sets. Oh well still looking.

Alternatively you could have used pocket holes and screws with some adhesive on the mating face to attach the 2x4 from underneath so as not to disturb the track

Larry, You may be disappointed with 3d printed gears especially one that small. They tend to be noisy and short lived. Are you familiar with McMaster-Carr, an industrial supply company that sells almost everything under the sun. They have a huge selection of miniature gears and a great search engine. No guarantees but you might get lucky and find the gear that you need. P.S. I never miss your videos
