I have a long, long way to go, but I am at the point where I can pick this kind of thing up almost immediately, the groove at least, and then start adding fairly simple fills to it. This makes me very happy.

Great tutorial, love the groove. 2 questions please: (1) I assume this is a iv - V - i progression in D minor, but why is the 5 on the A7 sharpened? That color sounds fantastic, but what is the theory behind this? Is this common in minor key or also in major? (2) What scale are you using to improvise, essentially only over the D minor really, and what passing notes and why? Thanks a lot!
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig 5 жыл бұрын
1. Sharping the 5th on dominant 7 chords is very common, it just creates more tension which then creates a bigger resolution to the Dm. 2. This is hard to answer in a single sentence! I would start out by playing around with D minor pentatonic, D minor blues scale and then D dorian.

This was the perfect vid at the perfect time. Because only recently figured out that the #11 of Dm is a great note to play off. That's why a Bflat 7 #11 chord just before the Aalt chord sounds good. The flat 7 of the Bflat is Aflat note.. (or G#) , the #11 of Dm chord

This sounds great, and it's crazy useful. I'm working on it, and I will be for weeks. But something I'm not following--Ami7(#5) looks to me like an A7. It's looks like you're playing a C#, the third in an A chord, and the E (the fifth) doesn't appear to be sharped. Am I missing something?
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig 6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you're finding it useful! Firstly, I made a mistake with the notations... it should be an A7(#5) as I said and played in the video. That explains why the C# is there. And you're completely correct about the E not being sharpened, you'll notice it contains the note F... this is harmonically the same note as E# but the software I was using for the light up keyboard notated if as F, instead of E#. But technically, it should be an E#. Good job for noticing :)

Hi, i have been to your web page. Do have an outline for each of the modules you are going to teach ? I am pretty interested in chord essentials and improvisation..and all kinds of playing styles.
@Piano_Pig

There isn't an outline available to see for each course I'm afraid! But I can tell you that Chord Essentials has over 15 lessons and is a step-by-step walkthrough on the basics of chords. There's currently just 1 course on Improvisation - 'The Mini Improv Course', it's not that mini to be honest, it's contains a load of backing tracks, PDF downloads and it's jam-packed with material! Hope to see you in the Academy :)

Iv'e tried also the Dm harmonic scale, cause it is easy to substitute natural minors with harmonic minors. But trying the D dorian makes it a little bit out off the tonality.
