Let's talk about THE LICK! This little line has become so cliche and almost an inside joke within the jazz community, buts it's awesome!
It can be used in so many different situations and analyzed from many different perspectives. It can be used as a Dorian lick, a 251 lick, a pentatonic lick, etc...
Once you've learnt it you will begin to hear it EVERYWHERE!

Great video content! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Riddleagan Possessing Piano Remedy (should be on google have a look)? It is an awesome one off product for learning how to play the piano easily minus the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my GF after many years got excellent success with it.

Great video! Will put it in my arsenal Btw, which application do you use to show the piano keyboard? Is it connected to DAW via midi or is it a hardware synth+app? I've searched a lot on KZbin but haven't found anything useful(

I played the lick during jazz band in high school, then the band director played a variation of the lick, he called it "The Bebop Lick". it goes "D, D flat, C, D, B, G A"

These are the same intervals, just a different key. But actually, you could play that in the same key as showed in the video (D minor).

Sorry if this might seem like a dumb question to jazz musicians, but in what way is FACE a d minor 9th chord? i mean sure its got everything else, but theres no actual D, so no root... wouldnt it make more sense to call this what it is, an F major7 chord?

The notes FACE are indeed what make up an Fmaj7, so you could call it that if you wanted. However, it can also function as a rootless voicing for a Dm9 since it has the 3rd, 5th, 7th & 9th. The root note is actually not a very important note in the chord, the 3rd and 7th are what defines the chord. If you want, you could analyze what I was playing as an Fmaj7 chord with a Lydian scale lick starting on the major 3rd. Or you could view it as I explained (Dm9 with a Dorian lick). It's up to you! But as for your main question about why FACE is a Dm9 chord, it's just a rootless voicing!

Shouldn't one traditionally start the lick on the root? This would make it I-II-b3-IV-II-bVII-I, right? All the blue notes (minus #4)?

There are so many ways to analyze this lick! You could indeed start it on the root note. You could also do a whole bunch of other stuff such as using it over a 251, use it as a Lydian lick over a major chord, Dorian lick over a minor chord. There isn't really any 'correct' way to analyze it, just different perspectives.

By the way mate, you don't use Roman numerals for melodic scale degrees, just for harmonic changes. (Melodic scale degrees are in Arabic numbers and can have a caret on top: ^5 ^6 ^7 etc.)

you can often omit the root of the chord when playing 9 chords. Mind that when you want to play a full 9 chord, you have to play at least 5 notes - and that is a lot for one hand. This is an economic way of playing. Besides, you can do different variations on the chord, and without the root it just achives different character.

Also in this situation, it is assumed that the bass player will be playing the D note. So for the piano, D is omitted hence a rootless D voicing.

It depends on where you choose to start this lick. If you like to think of the starting note to be the root note then absolutely! I personally prefer to start it on the 5th :)

I get your point. I guess because it's such a popular lick it's known to start pretty much anywhere or fit any context of the key. I guess when I hear it in my head I just hear it starting on the 1 of a minor key.
