Thanks for an informative video Eric. I have added figures to many of my K-Line extruded aluminum passenger cars and I completely agree with your comments on them. They are very labor intensive to disassemble and reassemble. I have used the painted figures from China and really like them. I also have done some detail painting during the process which adds some contrast to the populated interiors. Granted this takes extra time but with the LED lighting the newer cars have it really shows off everything nicely. I have used that jeweler's pickup tool to set the screw back into its place for re-threading. That accelerator stuff is a "must have". Thanks again!

In my 20's I used to paint and sell D&D figures. And once you learn the techniques, it takes about 15 minutes to get a decently detailed figure, maybe a half an hour for extremely detailed figures. One thing is to do them in sets, not one at a time, as some will use a common color (flesh being one). As for buying paints and brushes, those can be used for other things, like interior details in buildings and other items. So if you want customized looking figures and more variety in the cheap ones. painting is the way to go. You can use modeling putty to ado things like give someone a belly, or change that one girl you showed to wearing a long skirt. Plus, once you learn the techniques, it's actually fun. If a person has the patience to scratchbuild or modify kits, you have the patience to paint figures.

There are some simple alternatives for more detail. Especially for commuter trains, you could paint figures in business suits -- tiny newspapers could be simulated with printer paper. Repainting could add people in uniform. Hospital car figures could be simulated by figures painted in uniform, white, or coloured duty scrubs. The new ranges of 1:48 military miniature kits could be scrounged for accessories, including: ● briefcases, shoulder-bags, backpacks. & luggage; ● maps, papers, newspapers, books, radios, etc. ● dishes, mugs, cups, teapots, etc. ● pets -- dogs, cats, or birds -- or personal service dogs; ● uniformed military passenger figures (duh). Just a few accessories, especially on window-side tables. would add colour and individuality as the cars glide by.

An alternative to gluing is to use a dab of clear silicone. It takes a little longer to cure than CA but it fills inconsistencies-- like gap-filling CA -- and it accommodates a lifetime of bangs and vibrations from train usage.
@danielj.glowny4108 Жыл бұрын
Plus you can remove the figures and silicone glue off the seats and floor.

Don't get superglue accelerator on the paint. It may remove it as I found out. The K-line alluminum cars which may be the same as Lionel are terrible to get apart. I gave up. They came with figures and some came loose. I used a mix of the Chinese and Lionel figures. Good video Eric.

What type of accellerant are you usuing? My wife and I used to buy spraky accellerant from Gale force 9 but they have stopped making it and switched to a brush on kind. I'd like to buy spray on kind again but I can't find any locally.
@randytaylor12582 жыл бұрын
All of the companies that make a line of CA adhesives also make an accellerant -- check hobby shops for a spray version. While you're at it you could also pick up some debonder for those little, um, accidents. ;-)

So pleased to see you putting passengers in trains. Far too many outfits have loads of empty trains with no train crews either. What is the point of populating your "Realistic", layout but having completely empty GHOST TRAINS running around? I only moan because i was a train driver for many years. The only 'EXTRA' detail would be to have flip over platforms with waiting passengers on, then train comes in, ( obscuring view, flip passengers, for empty platform ) train leaves and passengers gone!! Only joshing, great vid as ever. It all depends on your dedication to detail/realism.

This hobby is really expensive. I mean just $40 to $50 being a deal for passengers, that is a lot. Eric must have spent a lot of his savings on this wonderful layout.
@randytaylor12582 жыл бұрын
Couldn't disagree more but I don't use thumbs down. This a perfect example of how you can budget your time with little projects. An afternoon in front of a video with snacks and a beverage, painting and modifying figures for mounting in a passenger car is idyllic. Thirty bucks for 36 people and an afternoon of entertainment doesn't seem excessive at all. Cut the cost and extend the fun by painting undecorated figures.
