I love your videos and Ive learned so much from you, but i wanted to say the following: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I saw you cut off an aerial root node at 2:50 from your pothos cutting. Your stem needs at least one aerial root node to grow roots into the water. If your cutting has no root nodes, the cutting won't root and eventually will wilt and die. You could root the stem with no leaves, but as long as you have root nodes on the stem, you have a high chance it'll grow roots. Thank you for all your helpful videos!

You're not wrong at all. That does ensure better success in growing the roots, but I've found that either way still works. 😊

Kevin most of what I know about aquariums and the up keep I learned from you! I ordered a couple of the Poth-O-Carry. But the one thing that I did was instead of waiting for one of the nodes to produce roots, I carefully took the plants apart and used the root system that is already established. When I get my poth-o-carriers I will used those. Right know I don't like the way the roots look in my tank but maybe the carriers would make them look better. Thanks for what you bring the the fish keeping world!!!

It’s best to start cuttings from a new plant in water, not just the new plant. Plants that are already growing in soil have a hard time just in water. Take cuttings, put those cuttings in a container in water until they root, then use those new cuttings in your tank. If you did that & still not working, probably not enough light.
@RenegadeLK Жыл бұрын
@@markb8954 I got the cuttings from someone who already has them in their tanks. Though now that you remind me the ones that came with roots are doing okay but the ones with no roots are struggling. Question why put the cuttings in a container of water oppose to in a tank?

Yo KEV ... When are u getting another tank ? I have a suggestion for a fish. It's an African Cichlid from Madagascar that looks like a South or Central American Cichlid when it comes to size. Its a black fish with white or bluish dots and grows up to 12 inches called the Starry Night Cichlid or Paratilapia Polenni or Bleekeri. I am sure you have heard of it. It's a beautiful fish. Just a suggestion. This fish is extremely under rated and overlooked.
@HalfManHalfCichlid Жыл бұрын
I have had huge pothos beds supporting nitrate redction for 10 years on multiple tanks and have done many videos on the topic. I would consider Pothos more of a plant "novelty" than a nitrite reducer. Takes a high quantity of pothos plants, growing rapidly to make a dent in nitrates for a closed system. Worst case, some folks may think with pothos they can do fewer water changes and in fact end up with hight nitrates. Hate to "rain on your parade", but that is my experience.
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
I would never advocate for less water changes just because you have some plants in or on the tank. Most of my steady and consistent subscribers already know that about me. I do disagree with how well Pothos removes nitrates though. I myself have noticed a massive reduction with the very few I have over my 150. They, combined with my matrix have gotten my nitrates down to 0. Something I never achieved with Matrix alone. (Matrix got me down to 10-20) Besides my own experience, There are many hobbyists that can advocate for the power of Pothos.
@AquariumAficionado Жыл бұрын
I have some mean pothos growing almost 4ft across the tank well anchored in water and it really does help with nitrate reducing It does need to be well anchored(multiple spots where roots shoot down or just a good sized well grown root system) in order to make a noticeable difference. Otherwise until it grows out it is in fact a novelty. In a sense all plants in a tank are novelty until they can become established👍🤝 everybody’s right lol

Kev you have helped me so much that watching this video I have one more question. My 150 has three lids. One is f$&ked up. Where do you think is the best place to get a replacement? Again TY for all you do 💪😉🤘
@coreymelanson6729 Жыл бұрын
I have/had that issue with one of my 3 glass lids on my 210 & one of two on my 75-gal that is jacked up. The 210-gallon was fixable because it has a metal slide in the middle connecting the two pieces of glass. If your 150 has that metal slide connector than it's as easy as making a $3 or $4 purchase on Amazon. That would be "Aqueon Silcone" which is aquarium safe of course as it is for aquariums. The nozzle was shit! Nothing would come out, so I keep cutting more off the nozzle, so on, eventually I squeezed so hard that the bottom of the tube burst open. Next time I won't even try to use the application nozzle & neither should you. You can use your fingers if needed to apply just have a dry rag handy to easily wipe it off (wet rag or soap & water won't work). I over did it, put globs of silicone on the glass portion that inserts into the connector & in the connector itself. I had damaged the tube so I could only use it once anyhow, so I got my money's worth. It came out fine but far from professional. It was the $200 I was saving by not needing to buy a set of 3 new glass lids that matter most. It did stink to high hell also. Had bring outside for an hour to let it air out. As for the 75-gal glass lid that did not have A metal connector just silicone or whatever. I have no way of fixing that, so I just use as two separate pieces & I'm no need or rush to replace or repair that. If you have the metal connector & you glass keeps sliding out "Aqueon Silicone" it was literally 3 or 4 dollars on Amazon. Good luck!

My pothos was struggling a lot because my blood parrot kept eating the roots. The KZbin channel "PlantLife Project" has a great video on how to get around that. I've also found that Lucky Bamboo is a little less tasty to my cichlids than pothos roots.
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын

@AquariumAficionado Жыл бұрын
Lucky bamboo is less tasty to them but it’s also not as efficient as reducing nitrates as it has a moderately slow growth rate. That’s what sets pothos apart from most indoor house plants, still a good addition but in my humble opinion pothos + lucky bamboo looks good and more plants never hurts.

I even use the plastic net that holds garlic I bought from supermarket. Then use clothes pegs, binder clips etc to fasten to side of tank. metal ties, shoelace, dental floss etc to connect your diy plant holder to the clip. SOrry to hear that. I know they've been swamped since I released this video. They are a very small operation. Please be patient, I'm sure they'll get back to you. I have had good success on IG DM when contacting them.

Not a bad idea. If fish have access to the roots they will eat them though.

Not all fish. If you have the type that will, check out their Versa basket to solve that problem 😊

@KaveMan Aquatics No doubt it's a good system mate. I made my own, the fish keep any roots that protrude the holes, trimmed off 😎

You're right, I checked the link and it was missing the WWW which was causing the error. It's fixed now...Thanks for the heads up! 💪

Also I did both ways by trimming like you did and also using the whole stem including the roots both are doing well but the fish pick at the roots

Nice, glad to hear that! Some people are so caught up on "Propagating" they believe there's no other way.

I’ve had plants for some weeks now and they are doing well sprouting new leaves but… those damn peacocks were picking the hell out those roots lol I’m adding more eventually

Yea, it can happen. Thats why I hide my roots behind the background 😊 You could try their Versa box as well to keep the fish away from the roots.
