I'd suggest adding an inclinometer to whatever device is used to track the Sun during that 24-hour observation --having it targeted at the center of the Sun, so that whatever slight deviation the Sun might make, is directly reported in the data. This can then be correlated to a similar observer situated well north of the 30-degree, such that the same deviation can be compared. Deny all flerfs any wiggle room.
@richardhanck9727 ай бұрын
As a base device, a high-latitude motorized equatorial mount would do... Designed to do exactly that, though such a high angle probably requires an expensive mount... A Skywatcher AZ EQ 5 looks like it'll do, but it's $1,600 so... Another problem comes in the form of "It's bloody cold out here, mate." Not much is designed to work continuously in -15 to -20 degrees F weather. I'd suggest an inflatable clear tent for the mount, with some kind of heater inside, or in/around the inflation device, to _attempt_ to keep the temperature up to something survivable by the equipment. Saw one on WalMart for about $850, but I dunno about the durability of that. Granted, it only needs to survive a few days... but that's a few days at -20 F. So that's like $3-4k minimum... and potentially for a one-shot piece of equipment.

This is not specific to the Antarctic but another possible experiment could be to take pictures of the Sun over the course of the day using a solar filter. Volunteers should do the same at various location all over the ... planet for future comparisons: - Use an alt-azimuth mount (so one horizontal axis and one vertical axis) to preserve the orientation. DO NOT USE AN EQUATORIAL MOUNT - The magnification should be powerful enough to show the Sun spots and to perform angular size measurements. If possible, use a camera with a fixed focal length length or a small telescope. A zoom camera such as the P9000 is fine as long as the zoom factor remains constant and is stored in the image file (EXIF data). - one or two photos of an object with a known size at a known distance should be provided as a reference for angular size measurements (vertically and horizontally). For example, a A4 sheet of paper 21x29.7 cm at a distance of 17m has angular sizes of 0.71° x 1° (so slightly bigger than the Sun) The goal of the experiment is to show how the location and the time are affecting our view of the Sun: - shape and angular sizes (vertical and horizontal) - orientation/rotation (using the Sunspots) - apparence (again using the Sunspots.) Strictly speaking, the 24 hours Antarctic data are not needed but they would be nice to have and could be be used as a reference point. The globe model states that the Sun is a huge and very distant sphere. - Its shape should remain circular at all time except for a small amount of vertical compression when approaching the horizon because of atmospheric effects. The Sun horizontal angular size should remain constant (during the course of a day). - The Sun orientation/rotation of the sunspots relative to the local vertical direction should be predictable. If I am not mistaken that angle is defined relatively to the Subsolar point(s) in a way similar to how the latitudes are relative to the Earth pole(s). - With the exception of the rotation, the Sun apparence should be identical for all observers (no noticeable parallax). All observations could be collected and compared to predictions according to the globe model and the FE model (whatever it can be).
@michaeldunlavey60157 ай бұрын
Good. Couple suggestions: 1) the sundial's gnomon should be near-vertical. 2) Note should be made that the sun travels LEFTward around the horizon, just in case somebody says "cheater - you're actually in the Arctic in June", (where the sun travels RIGHTward), or "you time-reversed or left-right reversed the vid." To show it's not time-reversed, include a fire with smoke, or maybe steam, or a vid of the airplane landing/taking off, or maybe somebody cooking or eating, or maybe show the time on a watch (a round one) provided by a flat-earther. To show it's not left-right reversed, show a page with some text, or maybe a vid of the airplane's propellers cranking down on the right-hand side, or maybe the nearby peaks, or just show a watch (a round one with digits) provided by a flat-earther.

My suggestion to improve The Final Experiment: Observe the Moon. Whether intentionally or not, Duffy's dates coincide with the full moon. So, make your predictions: Will the moon be visible to the participants during their time at Union Glacier? 1) Yes 2) No 3) Sometimes 4) Not enough information And does it depend on whether the earth's flat or a sphere?
@Sableagle7 ай бұрын
Four hundred thousand kilometres is a long way. It can be quite a long way south of opposite the Sun and still be "full." The moonrise & moonset page for King Edward Point in the South Sandwich Islands says 7° above horizontal to north and 65° below horizontal to south that day. That's 54.3°S and the glacier location is listed in the video as 79.8°S, so no, no visible Moon for them on that date.

@@whereswa11y In any case you will be able to see the orientation of the craters and other features, same with the Sun if a solar filter is used. That alone could tell that you are in the Southern Hemisphere.
@sineout92947 ай бұрын
Here is why I brought this up: If the moon is diametrically opposed to the sun at the moment of maximum full moon then obviously it'll be below the horizon if the sun's above. Of course it's not often _precisely_ there or there'd be a lunar eclipse every lunar month. And the chief reason there isn't, is the moon orbit's 5º inclination to the ecliptic. That means it could be anywhere between 5º higher and 5º lower than the diametric opposite point. Without researching further I don't know where it will actually be in that range, but then Wally's figures here show the sun will never be below about 13.5º, so the moon must be at least about 8º below the horizon, probably more, at that time. As it orbits it'll get closer to the sun but, as Wally says, won't rise before the 22nd or 23rd, The bottom line is, we can add to the expected observation: If the earth is a globe then, during the time the expedition is in camp, the moon won't rise as surely as the sun won't set.

Another observation to add for anyone going. Record the apparent diameter of the sun throughout the day. It should remain at around 1/2 a degree. This could be recorded on all sorts of equipment but so it’s as repeatable by anyone else anywhere else on the earth. A DSLR with a telephoto with a long enough focal length so the suns diameter can be made out. A basic solar filter that’s easily obtainable such as a white filter like a Mylar based one. Seems that flat earth models suggest the distance to the sun for any observer should change so much during a day that its apparent diameter should change dramatically over a few hours. Globe model the apparent diameter would remain the same. During a 24hour sun this could be verified and being on the Antarctic the change in apparent diameter should be at the greatest. Keeping the equipment accessible would mean others around the world can repeat the same observation at the same time and compare their results with everyone else.

@@whereswa11y Rob was being *VERY* careful about how he spoke,. IMHO he knew that the sun did not set for a period around summer. I would have taken issue with what he said, but not the flat earthers. Just as an aside, they had an "agreeable" person on line, not a person who agree that this is a globe, yet Rob had been to the continent that he was supposedly not permitted to enter. Did they talk about difficulties crossing the "ice wall"? What about NASA allowing Rob to be there at all? Did the others even raise these points? Nathan in particular has one attitude for those who agree with him, and has a *very* different, openly hostile, attitude to anyone who does not follow his lunacy.

The guy replied "not always" which indicates that the sun did sometimes set. He could have been there from January till middle February, when there is both night and day. I have been there from early December and the sun first set on the 29th of January and imediately rose again. By mid February there was both night and day, the nights getting longer.

Could you demonstrate and explain this wooden equatorial sundial? I may be teaching an astronomy class in the future and this looks like a fun thing for my students to investigate and learn about.
@whereswa11y7 ай бұрын
They are under $10 on Ali express. Just get the one with 2 dials. Basically the stick or gnomen is aligned parallel to the earths axis. So points to Polaris or sigma octantis. That will make the dial perpendicular to the axis and it is angled to the horizontal the same as the 90-latitude That means at south poke the dial is horizontal. At union glacier it is tipped st 10 deg . At the equator the dial is vertical.

I would be tempted to make the Globe Earth the Null Hypothesis and if the sun does not set, we can accept it. If the sun does set we can accept the Alternative Hypothesis that the Earth is not a Globe and leave it at that. This simplifies the design and remove any need to elaborate on a Flat Earth model that few FLERFs can agree upon anyway.
@glennledrew83477 ай бұрын
Flerfs haven't established any agreed upon model by which they can make the most basic predictions. And of course they won't even try, because they know nothing but a globe reflects reality. And so all they can do is try to nitpick individual aspects of the globular world, hoping their dull marks never glimpse the big picture of utter failure. Just the fact that in the far south the Sun at nighttime hours is essentially opposite in azimuth of where the dirt pizza model says it would be is already a dagger thrust deeply into the fallacy. Hell, just the fact of night (Sun well BELOW) the hirizon) occurring anywhere is damning enough, given their Sun is supposed to be at a fixed height ABOVE the pancake.

A person who makes money on the internet by pretending the earth is flat calling anyone a fraud is too oblivious to realize everyone can see right through his childish "I know you are, but what am I?" projection.

Nathan is as bad as Russell Brand in that he uses lots of long words in the hope that no one will be able to keep up with him when in actual fact, he doesn't understand any of them and talks a load of word salad. If he had any intelligence then he would know that if the earth were flat and the sun rotated around it 24/7 then it would never set, ever. But it does as we live, very obviously, on a globe. No flatearthers will ever take the free trip as they know it'll make them look stupid, which isn't hard lol 😆

Does this mean that if I start a flat earth channel someone is willing to offer mer a free holiday in Antartica? Or is the offer limited to established flatties like the charming Mr. Oakley? Frankly I'm glad none of them have taken up the offer. There are far better ways of wasting money. You could put it towards buying a Tesla pick up or purchasing NFT's.
