I work with a DVP, the regular programs serve men and children. The men get their orders granted just as often as women, if not more. The problem is the guys don’t step forward nearly as often as they should. It’s a societal thing. An important issue is the question “were you afraid” or “did you think they were going to hurt you”? Men’s knee-jerk reaction is often to down play or deny, especially if she is much smaller. The problem: Menacing is defined by the aggressor knowing and and (in a reasonably apparent way) trying to provoke fear or fear of an imminent attack. Ie Eating something you’re deathly allergic to is fine. Finding out you’re allergic and saying or acting like I’m going to expose you to the allergens is menacing and is illegal. Also an extremely common example of DV. If the guys cover up and insist they were never worried, just vaguely annoyed, and the abuser probably didn’t know she was spooking him… Then the police have a hard time assuming menacing. I repeat for the tl;drs It is not only okay to admit when someone smaller than you is freaking you out but If you don’t let the police know that she put the fear of crazy in you… it’s VERY difficult to charge her. SPEAK UP, BOYS. If Depp can do it so can you! We’re here, hit up the DV programs

Met a girl at work about 6 years ago. We started dating, I'd just come out of a very controlling relationship. After about 3 months of us seeing each other we moved in together (circumstances called for us both to leave where we currently resided so we thought we might as well move together and see if it works). One day another girl I'd been chatting to online messaged me on discord when my phone was on the table, I was cooking and my girlfriend was sat at the table talking to me. She looked at the phone, saw a girl had texted me, got up, passed me the phone without questioning anything, and carried on talking to me. I was shocked. Asked her a few days later (she had completely forgotten about it) and she just shrugged and said 'if I didn't trust you I wouldn't be here, dumbass'. Got married to her 2 years ago. She's never stopped trusting me for a second, and I've never broken thst trust. Still amazed at what being with a 'reasonable' person feels like sometimes.

I'm a child of a mother exactly like this. My dad had custody of my brother and I when I was 6 because my mom acts like _this_ My mothers family also acted like hers. But my maternal grandma... My grandma launched a HATE campaign against my dad when he got custody. It took me as a child looking her in the eye and telling her my mother had left me alone in multiple trap houses with strangers throughout my entire childhood. My dad tried to get her help. My brother and I begged her to get treatment over the years. It took 4 jail stints for drug possession and assault for her to finally have enough time sober to get her mind right. Sort of. But I was already 24/25 when that happened. And she still hangs around the same kinds of people. Which is a big no-no in recovery. Because of that, I haven't had a conversation with her in almost 10 years. I honestly hope this woman gets help while her kids still have hope. When I lost that hope I stopped caring whether my mom was sober or not... I made myself numb to it... and her. It's a weird kind of grief after you mourn someone still alive. I’m baffled as to why he held hatred towards his two children who he walked out on when I was 10 and my brother was 8. I found that out from my half sister who found us after he died. He had done the same thing to her but, they reunited and were on good terms when he passed away in his sleep from a drug overdose.

They arrested him and let her stay in his apartment that she didn't even live in. Guess what? She stole anything valuable and destroyed everything else in the apartment. She got a fine. He spent a weekend in jail for no kidding grabbing her wrist after she repeatedly punched him in the face and busted him open as a way to get her to stop hitting him. Craziest part is there was a room full of witnesses who testified to the police on his behalf, including multiple people who recorded it and he still was the one who was arrested and then people wonder why men don't come forward because more often than not, they're the ones punished, not the abuser

Medicaid and Medicare require a prescription for glucose meters. I have been through this with my parents. Especially if the patient has full coverage, a prescription and doctor’s recommendations are required as well as constant testing through your doctor’s office to create the paper trail to prove that said treatment is necessary. Since most elderly people on Medicaid do not have a steady AND abundant income they need the maximum medical coverage they can get. It also means you have to fight for medical equipment and/or medications far longer then if you had private insurance or could pay out of pocket. As the glucose monitoring patches/apps were gaining in availability mom’s doctor decided to file the appropriate recommendations, reasons for said recommendations, and the prescription needed for my mom to get one. 6 months, it took 6 months before we got the letter say she was approved. Mom had died almost 2 months prior. The monitor wouldn’t have been this huge life saving item, but it definitely would have improved her comfort. Just because something is obtainable without a prescription doesn’t mean a prescription isn’t needed.

My husband was in an abusive relationship for FIVE YEARS because no one saw how much he needed help and did nothing when it was evident he needed help. I think this is what happens in a society without gender equality. People think men should just “man up and take it” but the truth is, if you’re being abused YOU SHOULD HAVE resources to turn to. The fact that men have so few resources and support for domestic abuse is devastating cause no one should have to tolerate this kind of behavior from a partner, friend, or anyone.

It's mind-boggling how very few media exists in general that care enough to cover these topics, while the "man up" shtick is everywhere. Kids pick up on that mindset at a very young age because it's just.... accepted as the "norm". And it's sickening. Unhealthy. (kinda offtopic?) I only learned how to let go of that toxic "be a man" mindset when I watched Jojo's Bizarre Adventure of all things during COLLEGE, where masculine men were shown to cry and ask for help in a healthy manner. It's hard to let go of this toxic mindset when you barely see things that actively contradict it.

Being in a family with an addict is. . .something. One of my therapists used the Karpman Triangle to help explain the dynamic of my situation. You have an addict and their enablers. The addict will lean on the enablers and do so by playing a victim to earn sympathy and get something they need. You might tell your mother or sister that your husband is keeping food away from you so you need money for help. "Wait, why aren't you going to the police." He took my phone! If the enablers try to do anything other than what the addict wants (They want money, but you are offering to actually get help), they turn around and begin attacking the enabler. It would NOT surprise me if this woman is also abusive toward her mother and sister. In some situations, this is why enablers become so desperate to pacify the addict that they will even rush to the defense of the addict at the drop of a hat. Because if they don't. . .they will be put through hell. When you are in this dysfunctional dynamic, everyone just wants to get to the "status quo." The addict is using and everyone else is minding their own business. It sucks and it is rough to be someone in this situation who finally says "Enough is enough." And when enablers only have a skewed version of the story, it becomes infuriating. When I finally broke free of my family dysfunction, I had relatives I hadn't even spoken to calling me and emailing trying to pressure me to apologize to the addict. They all had no idea what I had been putting up with, they just had a very upset and angry addict calling and messaging ALL of them. It's rough. I am really happy to see this man making an effort to protect himself in addition to the children. I think that men, sadly, feel additional pressure to stay in abusive and/or unhealthy situations because they don't want to seem (or feel) weak, don't know how to ask for help, or believe they can fix the situation even at the sacrifice of their own mental health.

I’ve lived with an addict for extensive time (i am dependent and begged for my mom to NOT LET HER STAY WITH US) and it’s hell on earth. The screaming, the anger, the EXTREME PARANOIA, the “meth hair,” oh my god. Druggies think they’re so sneaky about it too when they’re not. The rambling and psychosis, the manipulation. Strange people coming around, and oh my god she was ALWAYS, ALWAYS on the phone. Always angrily contacting someone, always feigning for pills and meds and god knows what else. It got to a point i started carrying a knife on me and looking around corners for her. And i’ll never forgive that my mom exposed me to that by allowing her to stay even tho she herself hated the whole experience!

I'm from the Bible Belt, and it might shock some and surprise no one, but there are tons of people like this. Unfortunately I have experience with them. One friend of mine just didn’t want this girl he cared deeply about out on the streets, and she gladly accepted a place to lay her head. Feelings cross, and before you know it, her issues exist because of him. He "wasn't a real man" who couldn't "keep his woman in line". "I'm hurtin', I need help, and you won't lift a finger to help me. What are you doing with me if you ain't gonna help?" She'd say. He asked, "What do you expect me to do? You're a grown woman." She said, "You see me acting a fool, drag me back home. By my hair if need be!" ....Needless to say, it was a bad situation, and sorely not the least. Had another friend get hooked on H with her boyfriend because she couldnt get him to stop, and didnt want to leave him. In her mind it was, "I don't want him to die, I really don’t want him to die alone, and I don't want leave him because I'm all he has." As silly as this video was, it brought back some memories that are tragic. Real, and unfortunately, common.

It's depressing.

And when he started drinking he completely changed never seen him like that. That's not the man I've been with for 9 years. Alcohol revealed our husbands to us. My husband lied to me about who he was. So did yours. It sucks. Your husband, after he thought you were trapped in marriage, took his mask off. Mine did the same thing. He waited until we were halfway across the world on our honeymoon and dropped the pretense. So did yours. I thought if he got help for his alcoholism, then he would be okay again. But no. The man I married didn't exist. Your husband as you thought you knew him didn't exist. It's not your fault. He lied to you. But please. He showed you who he is. Please believe him.
