I quit KZbin (and my phone in general) less that 24 hours ago and it’s already benefited me (I realise I’m on KZbin now but it’s genuinely only to leave this comment). I could write an essay about things that I think would help someone get off of it but I’ll try to keep it short. You have to start NOW. Not tomorrow, not in 5 hours, not in half an hour. That is the exact trap of YT. The hardest part is always starting. I still have a great urge to go on my phone but it has lessened ever so slightly since I stopped using it. Secondly, you must stop rationalising with your brain. It is going to come up with 101 reasons why you shouldn’t quit, because it’s begging for you to carry on your addiction and take the easy route. For me, one of the BS excuses it came up with was that I get useful info from KZbin. That it true to a large extent but for far too long I took on the information and it helped me change many beliefs I had whilst at the same time I was making no actual changes in my life that were in accordance with my beliefs. If you’re in this situation your brain will try to tell you over and over that there’s something else you need to know, something else you need to ‘learn’ because it wants you tied to your addiction. Ignore it. Another thing I would say is when you stop just do something. Anything. Even if it’s seems absolutely pointless, it’s not because it is keeping you off of KZbin. You will thank yourself so much in 6 months or a month if you stop right now. You have to treat it as an addiction and take a clean break, because that’s what it is. To older people that may sound dramatic, but our screens are dangerously addictive. I don’t believe addictions are particularly dramatic or complicated anyway - they are just meeting one of your needs in some, unfortunately unhealthy, way. Anyway, I could go on but everyone who’s watching this video knows what they need to do, they’re just not doing it. It’s really really hard for the first few hours (at least) and likely the first few days and weeks (I haven’t gotten that far) but that’s inevitable. Don’t cave because of that, expect it! Also, keep a visual chart or something of how many days you’ve gone without it. Not on your phone obviously. It’s super rewarding to tick off a day and will keep you motivated and accountable. If you stop and find it hard, just know there are many other people at that exact moment that are going through the same thing. Good luck! My goal is at least a year without NO social media (I was only using Yt FYI). PS. I am going to post this on every Yt addiction video so you can’t escape me! PPS. If you found my comment useful in anyway please like so others can see and benefit!!

Also this comment section is amazing, especially seeing how we are all trying to move on from this app/website that has made us regretful after we have consumed the addicting content. Good luck to anyone trying to take this journey. I quit social media a couple of months ago and it's one of the best things that's ever happened to me.

YT has helped me a lot, but it also is somewhat destroying me now. It used too be social media, like Ig but I haven't been on IG in like close to a year now. But now it's YT, I'm consuming too much can't content that has noo use to me. Or every since YT added that shorts feature (which turned into tiktoc pretty much) I just find myself scrolling and scolling for noo reason. Now I need to limit my time on it too maybe 30min-an hour a day. But overall tho, I'm grateful for YT it did help me learn new skills alot of new ones and made me find new hobbies but now it's an addiction or useless content.

Just telling you this because I truly feel you've suceeded in forging a relation with your viewers. I quit youtube for some time and found myself getting sucked into it again, so I remembered this video. So, yet again, I take up this pledge for myself to not get sucked into youtube. Thanks Andrew. Thanks for the great video. These are some great psychology hacks that could be applied to any habit that we want to change in our life. Personally I think the majority of people severely underestimate the difficulty level of changing our habits and that is why they basically fail at it. When we want to change something in our life it really does require this level of analysis and strategic thinking. It's definitely a hard thing to do but if we can master it then we can really achieve a lot. Btw it's also very impressive that you made this video at 19, keep it up!

Let’s be honest though. People addicted to KZbin probably better off then people addicted to other social media platforms. There’s much more helpful content in here than any other platform. Update: Now that I’ve grown up I realized that an addiction to anything can be really harmful. I think people who are addicted to KZbin should most certainly treat that addiction. There’s more mind numbing content on KZbin now then there ever was and unfortunately I am also guilty of consuming that type of content as well.

Game Hacker think about this: you might be really suffering from the withdrawal symptoms but that does not mean you'll be depressed or in agony like that forever. later on you will have overcome your desire to return to the instant-reward loop and have picked up some new hobbies that are so much more fun and rewarding than the stupid phone. examples of hobbies and their benefits: Sports: keep physical and mental health in shape. boost your ways of strategic thinking (some, like ones in teams). for introverts and lonely people: ones by yourself are often forgotten! you can go for a walk/jog, hike, climb rocks/mountains, ride a bike/scooter, or even create your own game! making your own sport is also good for your creative thinking. Arts: boost creativity. help with mental illness (not a cure but it's something good for you to help you forget about it for a while). Reading: helps strengthen vocabulary and makes you learn new words. a pass-time that's better than watching dumb videos and looking at screens. Collections: makes you focus on something else. not really beneficial, but will get your brain off of your withdrawal. start one, i'd recommend something easy to do, like collecting bottle caps or soda can tabs. Yoga: lol i hate yoga but there's so many benefits. it increases flexibility, improves muscle tone, reduces anxiety, and calms your brain. also you can't do it without feeling like a stay at home mom lmao. Meditation: reduces anxiety, clears the head, boosts your iq, boosts your mood, and overall just makes you feel better.

I find that the best way for me to break a bad habit isn't to try to eliminate the bad habit, but rather just start a good habit that overlaps the bad one, eventually pushing the old habit to the side. For instance, my eating habits were awful. If it wasn't junk food I didn't eat it. Then my wife started keto. She was eating all the best foods and I was eating garbage. I started eating the food she cooked, but I didn't get rid of the junk immediately. Eventually I just decided I'd had enough of feeling like crap and stopped eating the crap. Build good habits and the bad will fall away as the benefits of those good habits give you more resolve and strengthen your mind.

I am really sad to admit that I have had a KZbin addiction for many many years. It started when I got my first IPod touch. I didn’t have a smart phone back then but the iPod with an internet connection was all I needed to start my KZbin addiction. That was in 2012 when I was ten. And it scares me, that I have had the KZbin addiction since then. That’s almost a decade now... For me it started out with music. Lyrics videos and music videos (although most of them were only on VEVO back then). Then I started watching certain youtubers, mostly comedy like sketches and maybe some beauty youtubers. I was the only one in my class back then who even regularly watched KZbin. So when the other kids started discovering it, I was the one who already new everything about it and that made me popular. So I started purposefully watching every big youtuber from my country, so I would always know the latest content. At 10 years, I had already developed a serious KZbin addiction. I spent several hours a day watching it and I hid my IPod under my blanket so I could keep watching videos at night. I lost a lot of sleep. It’s needless to say that my addiction got worse, when the IPod turned into an iPhone with mobile data. I once spent 100€ in one week on mobile data because I watched so many videos. I tried to always hide my addiction from my family, but I think they noticed. Only in 2020 I realised that I didn’t just watch a lot of KZbin but I was really addicted to it. I noticed, that I can’t stay away from my phone and that I feel empty when I don’t hear the constant sound of the videos. I also noticed that I didn’t even care about the content anymore. I just needed the visual and auditory stimulation. So I kept watching KZbin several hours EVERY SINGLE Day. Of course Covid didn’t help either... It has gone so bad, that I feel my vision getting worse, my attention span is no longer than 5 minutes and from the constant noise surrounding me, I have gotten a tinnitus. Even seeing this video is a symptom of my addiction. I wanted to just sit down and quietly eat my salad. I already have a headache but I just couldn’t eat without having something playing on my phone. So I went on KZbin and found this. Please guys, if you struggle from this too, please take it seriously! There are so many amazing things we could do with our time! Art, sport, cooking, reading, spending time with family, calling a friend, playing with a pet. I know KZbin can be great and it has taught me many things (as in language videos, tutorials, documentaries etc.) but there are much greater things! Please take this seriously and put your mental and physical health first!

Thank you for this video! I'm not sure if I'll break my life long addiction anytime soon, I have trouble following advice because a deep part of me wants to continue this cycle of misery, but I'll start implementing parts of what you've talked about in the video. I've heard all the advice you've covered before, except the one about the "dark self," and have forgotten about Mel Robbins until now. This is a important video, I believe more people need to listen to it because KZbin (and video game) addiction is a huge problem for young people such as myself.

youtube is incredible because it is so specific and niche to everyone who uses it. no matter who they are. and you unlike something like smoking, there is usefulness to it. with tutorials and motivationals and news etc etc. so you have to be so specific about what constitutes a bad or unproductive youtube binge and what is a good one. and remember that any habit that you do a lot that isn’t creating something is an addiction. it’s consumption. this inspired me, but i’m a fucking junkie for this app. i use it in bed for 7-10 hours everyday. if i can obviously. because i determined a long time ago that games made me feel like a loser but then this wasn’t much better but it really wasn’t a great alternative with all the shit posts etc. for years it’s been everyday since i got off school too. anyways. i’m done. i’m going to go cold turkey with this and i’m serious. i HATE the idea of being addicted to things. i kicked sugar pretty easily once i realized it was addictive too. and i don’t smoke or drink either. but like with youtube, i obviously break the rule sometimes, but i’m not addicted. he’s right. it’s time to change. i’ve tried before but i told myself youtube wasn’t all that bad, but something could be BETTER. it’s not that youtube isn’t totally bad (it depends a lot on what you watch i’ve found) it’s when you could be spending this time making money or hanging out with people or something else. youtube got me through quarantine too but damn it’s time to change. watching motivational videos on here put me in the right direction too but then again, ITS ON KZbin. and i don’t blame myself entirely. i worked out everyday at the gym before quarantine but when the gyms closed i didn’t want to just run, (which i did for months in but then it got cold again). so it’s over. may god have mercy on me because this is going to suck shit. fuuuuuuuuuck i’m going to be so bored. jesus. goodbye news and current events. (i don’t use any other social media). goodbye memes. goodbye cute girls in feed and twitch clips and pewdiepie and random interesting videos and daily dose of internet and tutorials. (although i might still come on for those because i’m thinking about painting). goodbye motivational videos and films and short films and documentaries and celeb drama and tik tok comps and among us gameplay. goodbye vine comps. i’ve made thousands of comments and gotten hundreds of thousands of likes on them collectively. i’m INVOLVED. i have half a million views on a tik tok vid. but it’s gotta stop. im not necessarily a loser or a loner but jeez i could be doing better. good luck out there with your journeys friends. this is going to fuck me up so feel free to reach out i’m usually quite responsive for comments, well, i guess not anymore ha. but yea. 804 297 6138 is my number dm me i guess now lol. peace

Hey! I feel ya bro. Programming is awesome and you do not need to learn everything to do some cool things. I'd even say that it is way easier than what I imagined when I had no idea of how it was. Consider trying to learn a language through books and doing some exercises, then try to do something small to begin. Something you're interested in. If possible, you could also join a course. Luckily, all information is available online for free. But you could also take a non-online approach if that suits you better. You also get to know a lot of people by doing this. This is kinda a bit of generic advice for whatever is worth, as I'm not familiar with your situation. The best thing I could advise is to be careful with relying too much on watching KZbin videos, as it can easily get you stuck on a tutorial loop. I have found myself many times in that scenario. Where I would just go watch some guy doing the things that I wanted instead of doing them myself through trial and error. Just don't be afraid. In my case, I was interested in learning Unity and tried to learn by watching KZbinrs. Although this approach was not that great for me. Sometime later I force myself to go to college and it was the best decision I took. Now I can look back and feel proud of myself of what I've learned. I'm a hundred percent sure you guys will find the confidence to achieve your goals!

1. Turn off your phone when you procrastinate 2. Block KZbin’s website on your laptop 3. If you can: Allow yourself 1 hour a day. No more. Use that hour well! 4. Avoid ”recommended” at all costs and resist the urge to click. Save recommendeds in a playlist for another day. 5. Realize you are addicted. Tell your friends about it. Let them help you!

Another trick that is less psychological is to increase the friction between yourself and the bad habit. For example if you are addicted to youtube download a blocking app that is hard to uninstall. This suddenly transforms the "one click" to find youtube to actual work and you won't be as motivated to go onto that website. For that I can recommend you the book "Atomic Habits" by James clear. He talks about breaking bad habits and also mentions techniques used in this video. I hope I was able to help you.

@@lifeisshortdontwasteitread2830 a few years ago I nearly took my own life. You know what got me back on track? PURPOSE. Not a goal, not a skill, not a project. The thing that kept me on this planet was finally getting a job that augmented my paltry self employment, and boosted my sense of self respect. You're a straight A student with lots of goals and dreams, and that is where it falls apart. Good grades, knowing a second language, having a cool skill, these don't give you purpose, but purpose is precisely what you are looking for. You are looking for a reason to get out of bed in the morning, a reason to persevere. You're only 16, so this is still something that you need to find. No 16 year old knows their purpose. But if you look to history, what did our forefathers do to find purpose? They worked hard, took care of their family, got married, had children (in that order), looked to a higher power for guidance, respected those who had come before. These things are today considered old fashioned, quaint, backwards, ignorant, or worse, but the fact is that our forebears lived purposefully, they woke up every morning determined to use their bodies and minds to serve family, community, nation, God. They endured war, plague, famine, death, yet they felt as part of something greater. They didn't wallow in misery because their lives were full of purpose. First off, you need to binge this Andrew Kirby guy. He talks sense. Go find Jordan Peterson and Jocko Willink. Read Marcus Aurelius, dare I say pick up a bible (I shocked the hell out of myself when my atheist self first started reading it to understand). Fill up your mind with good and wise thoughts, and then go apply it. Be kind to others always, get up early and exercise, stand up straight, clean your room. Improve the way you interact with your world! Go find a job. You're 16. Jobs for 16 year olds exist. They all suck, but they will give you something more than just a paycheck. You will learn how to take orders, work as a team, work with people you hate and who hate you, get up on a schedule, serve someone beyond yourself. You can learn to manage your finances, give some of your paycheck to charity, or put it back into your own family and become a contributing member, making your family stronger for your efforts. But most of all you can stand up straight and tell others that you work hard and contribute to the world. Powerful stuff. The things that make you feel whole are not lofty goals, projects, or education for education's sake. The things that will fill that empty spot in your soul are far more mundane. Fixing your car's brakes in the driveway, repairing a drawer in the kitchen, apologizing to the kid you bullied, buying a cheeseburger for the homeless dude, teaching your little brother how to tie a fishing knot, helping mom fold laundry. These things will make you feel better about yourself, and help you find your purpose. But I'll tell you straight up: you are NOT going to find your purpose on youtube. Good luck, my friend. And even though you don't believe, God bless.

@@lifeisshortdontwasteitread2830 you're definitely thinking things through, and that is commendable. I'll try to address as much as I can here. First of all, sometimes a job is a distraction, and if it distracts you from thinking about killing yourself, then some days that's good enough. But your purpose isn't the job you have, it's WHY you do the job. Do you want to build something of your life, or do you want to not be homeless? See the subtle difference? How you frame it in your mind is paramount. If you approach your job as drudgery that keeps you from dying of starvation, then that is what it will be. If you see your job as the activity which improves your financial situation and gives you a reason to get out of bed and make the most of your day, then that is what it will become. Your framework is nihilistic and destructive to potential growth. Try saying thank you more often. Try seeing the best in people rather than the worst. Stop hanging out on social media that effectively tears others down. You keep talking about wanting to do something to change the world. Society has done a great job of telling us that anyone can become president, if we just dream big. But that is a lie. 99.99999% of everyone who has ever lived has not done a damn thing to drastically change the world. For every Elon Musk there are thousands of factory workers, manufacturing his ideas to change the world. These individuals are certainly a part of this great change, but they do not get the glamorous life that Elon gets. Instead, they get a good paycheck, they pay their bills, bring home takeout on payday, save all year to take a vacation to Yellowstone. They get their meaning, but it isn't as earth shattering as you expect. They are taking care of family and building their own lives, and in the back of their mind they know that they are a part of something bigger than themselves, that in some small way they are contributing to big changes for the world. I work for the USPS and on the surface it can seem mundane or even pointless, but what am I really doing? I'm making birthday surprises happen, I deliver passports so people can take a vacation, I bring medications to elderly people, I bring a moment of human contact to shut ins, I deliver car titles, tax refunds, car parts, collectibles. My job creates change in the world, in numerous small ways that add up... but only because I frame it that way. I could see my job as mindless monkey work, delivering grocery flyers and demands from charity, but that would be missing the point. You're well off, and I think that has been both beneficial and detrimental for you. What you lack is perspective. Living in luxury will do that. In fact, here in America the poorest among us still have access to resources that would seem luxurious to an orphan in Calcutta. My suggestion is to volunteer at a homeless shelter, or refuse your allowance and only live on what you earn. Find the worst job you can find in your area - farm hand, construction worker, whatever - and do it with gusto. Throw your whole self into picking up cow shit or digging ditches. You will gain a different perspective, you will meet people with vastly different world views than you, based on their personal experience. Those kind of lessons can't be learned in college, they can only be learned from getting blisters on your hands and watching them turn to calluses, talking to the 54 year old chain smoker who regrets his life choices and blames it all on his ex, denying yourself luxury to gain something greater than a new car, or the latest video game system. Running off to live in the woods isn't such a terrible idea, either. You live in a bubble (most of us do, to one degree or another), so get out of that bubble. Get some perspective. As to looking into christianity, I'll tell you as a former atheist, that the ultra simple "jesus died for your sins" idea of christianity is not the end of it. That helps a lot of folks, but as a recovering atheist I needed more. Jordan Peterson's biblical series (right here on youtube) is a long winded and methodical breakdown of the book of Genesis, and it is part of what got me into church. Seeing religion reconciled with evolution just blew my mind, and learning to lean on God and understand him as the energy which gives life, holds the universe together, and directs our evolution, it floored me. I can sum up God as the answer to why. Science has done a damn fine job of telling us how, but I have yet to hear science explain WHY I exist, WHY the laws of physics behave as they do, WHY my instincts seem to guide me when I never asked them to. God. Answers the why for me. Hopefully I made sense to you. Sorry for writing a book.
