Yes, it is not so much about KZbin but general media consumption. Yes, if you want to end up like the typical TV-music-film-game-book consumer with no own life and little real-life achievements, go ahead. This is as old as entertainment; it only gets more accessible, cheaper, and more fun in recent decades. If you have goals and plans in life, then remind yourself that as a total consumer, you will not get there if all you do is consume, consume, consume, consume.

If I’m being honest the only reason I’m addicted to KZbin is because I have no social life. I can happily close the app and do the things I want to do like exercise or create art. But the fact I have to be alone all the time is what keeps me on KZbin. Long videos and podcasts makes me feel like I have friends. I’m autistic and have always struggled with communication and maintaining friendship.

Same. I keep asking my family for help but they are too sucked into Facebook, online shopping and their own lives to help. It sucks because I feel like the burden shouldn’t be on them, but I can clearly see them struggling too. It’s almost like they don’t want to recognize the downsides like with alcohol.

I find that nobody in my daily life shares interests with me. I like learning all kinds of things but have no one to talk to about them. KZbin is at least an outlet for comments like this one. However, we need to be careful with something that's like a digital drug, designed to be addictive.

You describe my situation perfectly "how I associated relaxation was with KZbin". I've started to realize that I don't actually like the dopamine mine that is social media, the only part I like is talking to my friends/family and seeing what they're up to. It keeps me connected but it's so easy to fall for the short form content hole and spend precious hours of your time looking at nonsense. Social media has been prevalent in my life since I was in middle school and I can honestly say it's given me brain fog as I can't remember certain parts of my life. I hope for myself and others to regain freedom from doom scrolling and to invest time into meaningful hobbies.

I really recommend the book Digital Minimalism for what you’re talking about. It has a section dedicated to when you don’t want to give up social media to keep up with people, and it talks about how to keep up with people that are important to you in a deeper and more meaningful way than social media. I liked it a lot. Though, I haven’t actually gone through with it yet 😅

A few hours ago I chugged 2 energy drinks convincing myself I'll turn it all around in an all-nighter, but all I've done so far is nervously watch youtube and now it's 4 am. I've been watching youtube 12 hours a day all semester, things are at their boiling point now. I needed this video, maybe yesterday would have been better, but better late than never. I'd suggest people to also read digital minimalism. The point is not to quit forever, the point is that technology is very useful, but we generally don't use it for specific goals, rather we just interact with it to interact. Learning to control this by finding what you value is important. You can allocate time each week to check up on specific creators you enjoy rather than sit daily for three hours scrolling and hoping that something good pops up. Simple planning like that gives you the time and freedom to do things you value and enjoy instead.

Man, you're an angel. KZbin addiction has been a serious problem for me too. I wouldn't say I've fixed it by any means. I did have about 3 weeks recently where I was off it. All of it. No KZbin, Reddit, Podcasts, Netflix, etc. And it was some of the happiest 3 weeks of my life. I felt more, I felt better. My depression lifted like I was miraculously cured by Jesus or something. And then it all went downhill again. But now I know what the better life can be like and I can achieve it again. Wish me luck!

Hey, ex-KZbin addict here. I figured how to deal with that on myself, but your video would be really helpful back then. I just wanted to say that its nice to see that another peson has the same motivation as me, to be a good father. It was one of the first things i've written in my "What i want to do in my life" list. To be a good father and raise strong and independent children. My father was a great provider, he worked and worked for me and my sisters, even when things got tough. Even still, he didnt spend much time with me. Yes, i remembered some times that we played football or wrestled for fun, but i needed more. I dont blame him, i dont blame his father for not teaching him that. They come from different times and different environments, ones where survival is the most important. They didn't have opportunities and even time and freedom to think what they wanted My only hope is that I can break this cycle with me, and my chlidren can continue that onto their own children. All I can do is Try & Hope

It's so crazy that I'm watching this video being in the exact same situation. I remember studying with your streams when I was at home and in high school after the pandemic. You helped me focus like no one ever has. Then things happened in my life and it led me to a state of vegetation where I was addicted to KZbin, to pornography, to reels, to Instagram, to watching what others were doing while I did nothing and complain about it but without breaking the loop. Thank you for this video James, I feel a lot less alone and reading the comments I realize that I have never been alone ! I have exams in two weeks, your video helped me get back into my revisions seriously, and get back into sport too. THANKS !

This issue with using content as escapism as you described rather than an varied activity in moderation is a big part of what has put me in a rut since COVID. I've dropped out of college multiple times because I couldn't focus on my work and felt like I was in a deep haze, I'm in my early 20s and I'm still figuring out what to do with my life and getting more conscious of these habits and mitigating them completely to improve it is definitely something I need to work on. I notice that the hardest part for me is starting to do it and also to resist unconscious urges to engage in escapist activity. It can also feel quite overwhelming with all of these different "productivity" strategies to pick from when you don't even know where to start from in the first place. I've been attending therapy again, and trying to work with those suggestions but I've been slacking off due to this issue. I struggle with GAD (chronic anxiety) every day and I notice that content-as-escapism doesn't help, it actively makes me more neurotic instead of relaxed. My issue with a lot of productivity and self-help/improvement content is that I feel like honestly a lot of the creators are charlatans trying to sell you a product or packaged ideology (*cough* redpill content *cough*) as a solution to all your life's problems but I admire your relatability and I feel that you're quite genuine in these videos and trying to see everyone succeed so I trust your stuff as a supplementary guide to work with.
@andra5979
@andra5979 5 ай бұрын
If it’s overwhelming, which is certainly relatable, it’s because you’re overthinking it. All you really need for productivity is a to-do list and a calendar, you’d benefit much more from focusing on journaling. Writing out your goals, the emotions of anxiety surrounding those goals, and a few steps in order to get closer to your goals will start getting you closer to your desired position in life. I left college in a similar fashion, dropped out multiple times, eventually found myself in the workforce making good money, but I eventually burnt out after working 60-70 hr weeks due to my work’s labor shortage issues coming back from Covid. Journaling helped me realize I wanted to go back to school, finish my degree and get a job in a different industry. I’m now back in college with a 4.0 GPA, largely because I came to terms with myself about what I wanted and how I would go about achieving those goals.

cant even tell you how relatable this was. been having a really hard time lately getting myself to not waste the little downtime I have on doom scrolling with my brain fully off. it's like i havent even been doing it for enjoyment/pleasure anymore but just to fill a sort of void of meaning I feel after studing all day with no apparent 'payoff'. of course, I realise that the true payoff is in the form of small incremental changes to my mind and - hopefully - a job one day, but the 'me' that is experiencing the present moment rather often has a stronger pull on my actions than the 'me' that is rational and thinking on a long time scale. need to fill that void with things like reading and 'true leisure' like you and people like cal newport have talked about. thanks being the realest james

I totally agree with you especially on the point where you try to make something unattractive and such. My professor once said that his teacher used to say a phrase “only dose makes a thing not poison” and I think this phrase applies in the topic of social media addiction. It’s hard to cut out social media entirely especially in our generation, but I think taking time off, watching educational videos and following people who inspire you to become better is the best way. Use social media but don’t let it use you. 👍🏻

huge amount of respect for your openness about your struggles with addiction / aspects of your personal life, james. I am sure this video will help a lot of people get on the right track! : ) addiction and mental health are inextricably linked -- there is a reason why people with neurodivergencies and/or mental health issues are incredibly-susceptible to addiction in all forms, not just KZbin. with how stimulating youtube and other social media platforms are + how immediately accessible they are, its a really common pitfall for many. ultimately the key here, as you mention, is addressing the root causes that in your life make you susceptible to addiction. going to therapy (if you are able!), building positive support systems, getting medication to help you manage, etc. will all help the vast majority of people in their fight to resist addiction. super important message, and I'm glad our generation is waking up to it. (and that we have folks like you sharing and echoing this message!) cheers, dude !

My mom got in a car accident so that she will only be able to walk in like 2 months. My grandma is diagnosed with cancer. The household is on me. The weather here where I live is very cold, so you can barely see the sun and even be outside for more that 10 mins before freezing. It's also my last year of university and I must do my best to graduate. I lost my job because of my employer's unfair attitude. Things are too much all at once. Kinda wonder what to start with. But I'll try as hard as possible to deal with them one by one. And I'll hope it turns out to be getting better somehow. ❤

Another book I'd recommend along with Easy Way and EasyPeasy is the Freedom Model by Steven Slate. It states that mental addiction is not a real thing and reinforces the decision making power we have in using substances and is easily applicable to social media, porn, etc. Very compelling read and it's written by former substance users who went through the programs.

Write it down on a list to remind yourself. -Find ways to view the service as unattractive. It could be seeing KZbin as the dopamine trap it is. Taking a break from the platform and refocusing your goals onto something else might help you to see all the qualities you don't like about it. -Don't associate it with something positive, like relaxation. Instead find new things that help you to truly relax like exercising, meditating or reading. Break that association. -How is this hindering the person you want to be? Find motivation in understanding why you want to break yourself away from this tendency. Is there something from your past that you don't want to repeat and or be in the future? -Be aware of all the ways that your life is better when you spend less time on KZbin. You should get to the point where you start to prefer not being on the platform. Prevention: -Watching KZbin and other easy dopamine hits, is a symptom of the bigger mental health problem in our generation. There is a general feeling of a lack of purpose and sadness. Recognize that you may be using these platforms just as a way to ignore those feelings. -Take the time to improve and work on your mental health however you need to, to eliminate the cause. Overall, KZbin is still a really helpful platform, and you don't need to cut it out of your life completely, we are working toward being aware of how we spend our time and therefore having a choice, rather than getting stuck in a loop of feeling bad, watching something to make yourself feel better, then feeling bad for not spending your time how you really want to, and so on.

I also grew up with no father (totally absent from birth) and worked really hard in college to not end up like that side of the family (he got arrested for violence and sexual assault and it was in the news, yikes)... I ended up graduating with top grades in 2022 (your streams really helped me in that!), but it was so stressful and physically hard to do my final thesis in he lab because of my chronic stomach disease (had it since childhood) that I didn't know what to do afterwards. I was scared to start a PhD even though that's what I always wanted. So I went to Japan and South Korea for five weeks, which was great, but then I got home... I found a job in industry and while the team is good and I like the coding part, I really hate that I have to do customer support and I feel like there's nothing I'm moving towards anymore. Kind of like I'm Mr. Anderson in the Matrix. I'm not sure what I even want anymore. I feel so lost recently :/ Anyway why the fuck did I start writing an essay... I don't know lolll thanks for the video as always though. I started my own study with me channel this year and hope to see it grow into something in 2024

Yes because that's... fulfillment in life? What's the thing with telling people nowadays that getting rich and going to the gym makes you happy? There's more to life than that. @@ui4391 Some genuine advice to OP: find something out of your work that you like. Sometimes you can improve your work and work towards a new goal when you can create a juxtaposition between a hobby and work. I know someone who was obsessed with D&D and was also in IT, turns out he helped create some programs to help people play the RPG during pandemic.

It really helped me when I used the half filled half empty method. Basically I tried many alternatives to relaxing activities like for example solving a Rubik's cube or practicing card magic to shift my focus away from KZbin whenever relaxation comes to mind instead of constantly thinking "Don't scroll" which technically keeps the thought of scrolling in your head still. Hope this makes sense lol

"KZbin" was an excuse to share some interesting tips and honest opinions about addictions these days. I really empathize with the fact that our generation is sad one bc of the lack of a promising future. I think it is necessary to realize this to find what drives us and find a purpose for our life. I remember one time you posted about your insecurities about continuing to upload videos here because you felt it was a contradiction to your own ideas (about the danger that youtube could pose if used incorrectly). But I really think you succesfully achieved to use your channel as a tool to provide useful and inspiring ideas for life. As always, thanks James. ♥Virtual Hug :D ♥

Sorry I'm not native speaker, but I wanted to say that I love this channel so much and years before it helped me to understand myself better and study more and see some representation of person who's a lot like me. And now I found out I struggle with social media and screen time overall after breakup so I just searched "how to break phone addiction" and after scrolling a little through not-so-relatable titles I saw this!! And quickly understood that video was posted just a day ago. I'm grateful that things that I need just be popping out of the air it's beautiful

This is bold, and I'm glad our generation is taking this stuff seriously (especially in the wake of seeing Gen Alpha growing up into this cycle). I think about this stuff a lot because I've gotten good at quitting unnecessary vices and I think the internets hard to quit, yes you have to face yourself head-on which is scary, but also social isolation and systems that prevent us from breaking social isolation are what keep me on the internet. What I mean is depending on your location there often isn't places of gathering: third places, or places where expression can exhibited and the law of addiction is when you quit something you usually pick up a habit to cope (or to replace the function of the thing) with quitting and that's really hard because say you've distanced yourself from old friends, there aren't any good places to meet that don't involve drinking in your area and when you do meet people they're also addicted to the internet and meaningful connection can get lost. Essentially when you have no alternative to the internet what then? and maybe I'm just coping, but it really feels like there aren't many good options out there (yet?) I see more and more about this conversation ongoing in education/community spaces, and this idea is kind of what I'm studying as an art educator and unifying the community through art.) Maybe I'm looking too big picture, like you're talking specifically about youtube and that's kind of sore-spot for me because YT is the one socialmedia I can't kick (I've invested too many parasocial relationships here), but I think being mindful is a better approach, like I personally carry around a CAT S22 Flip now because it can do necessary smart phone functions but isn't nice to use for long periods of time, and in my life I found when I am out I can afford to lose access to social media and contain my usage at home (though I feel less productive at home now I think). So idk, I do remember a time in middle-school (early 2010s) I had unsubscribed from all my YT channels I followed and started fresh & with it I created a new personality and stressed not needing to watch every new video, so I know it's possible for me to improve my relationship with YT somewhat lol. Kind of turned into a ramble but I'm procrastinating finals. I hope this stream of consciousness helps someone lol

this actually does rlly help. Used to be a stellar student, but youtube and all these escapist habits ruined my life. Now basically flunking the past 3 sems of uni and struggling to resist the temptation of giving up or sticking through with this and getting back on my feet. What you said about 3rd places rlly resonated w/ me - I feel like my major (cs) is antithetical to that and because my high school friends, who all motivated each other and hung out, went to different unis im srsly struggling. It relieving to hear that other people are struggling the same but also doing things about it too. Its almost like theres a light at the tunnel

Hey James I wanted to thank you for having been so sincere about this topic. I find very helpful listening to talk about it. I share your point on the capability of having a choice and being able to stop doing something, because it requires thinking about our action and listening to ourself and the things we want to do. I’m struggling with KZbin for a year now (I mean that’s when I started being able to figuring out when I’m using it in the wrong way), and I often found myself in the same situation as you. For some time I have been able to successfully concentrate on my studies, but recently I started struggling again. Life seems like a circle hahaha. I’m also searching my light out of the tunnel… but one day you’ll se me become a mechanical engineer 😎

A practical tip for Android phones ( because I have never used apple so I don't know about that ) - Turn off your KZbin search history and recent activity, what will happen is that suddenly your home screen will become totally blank and there will be no recommendations on your phone this way whenever you open KZbin mindlessly Then there would be nonthing to scroll. first you have to think that what I should watch and believe me that's really a task this will give you a moment of time for you to think whether it is meaningful for you to be on platform or not If I talk about KZbin shots then what happens is that whenever you scroll KZbin shots then the next time they are the same and they never change so that's also irritating and so you will stop scrolling anyways this has really helped me a lot as an aspirant. And on windows you can do it better by using extensions.

My summary: Regain the ability to make a conscious choice: 1. Recognize your use of KZbin (the difference between what you think and what you actually do). 2. Think about what you'd rather be doing instead of watching KZbin or scrolling. 3. Rethink the addiction as unattractive and unappealing behavior - perhaps by finding activities you enjoy more or pursuing other interests. 4. Choose alternative ways to 'relax' instead of watching KZbin (consider the association you developed during this time). 5. Recognize your self-image and the direction in your life, such as your goals or the person you want to become. 6. Prevent it from happening again - work on improving your mental health and avoid using scrolling or watching KZbin videos as a means of escaping your emotions PD: if you have resources to learn to fix our mental health is welcome lol
