You're right, Cap and Tony's roles seem to be reversed in their way of thinking in this movie, but that's character development as we go along. Tony's and Cap's respective mindsets or decisions were influenced by their past experiences. Tony learned from the first Iron man movie and Age of Utron that his weapons can be misused, therefore he wanted an authorizing body to oversee them. Captain America on the other hand learned from the Winter Soldier movie that even government organizations like SHIELD could be corrupt and therefore, he doesn't trust anyone to oversee them.

The truth is, their roles aren't reversed at all. MCU fans always have trouble with this movie because their understanding of Steve and Tony are limited to the movies and who they think these characters are. These movies took their time telling you who they were so that by the time it got to this point they would basically match the way they are in the comics. Tony, much like Peter Parker has been motivated by guilt and the mistakes of his past. Tony has a huge ego, but more often than not he has worked with and allied himself with the government in the name of being a futurist. Steve is a man who always does what's right even if it goes against what everyone else including the government thinks he should do. He's not a patriot who blindly follows orders.

Comic book fans always have trouble realizing that the MCU characters are their complete own entity, and stuff that may be true about their characters in the comics is not necessarily true in the MCU. You need to remember that these characters are INSPIRED by the comics. They are not direct copies, so using comic book knowledge to describe their personalities is pointless

It's just a testament to how good the MCU can be written just because of all the connections and relationships that are there. In the comics it wasn't Howard Stark who made the shield, but in the MCU they have that connection and the writer can exploit that plot point and increase the pathos, they didn't plan it years in advance, they just made a universe where that could grow

Oh and I find it irritating that Stark wanted Rogers to cooperate with the Accords when Stark refused to let the government have his technology when it was demanded of him.

The theater I was in exploded with cheers when "Queens" popped on the screen. Remember that for many people, Spiderman is THE superhero. There was a time when he was the most recognizable Marvel hero bar none, and the Sam Raimi movies were, for many, when Superheroes broke into the mainstream. If you were into comics in the 90s and 00s, odds were you loved Spiderman. Unfortunately, Marvel didn't have the film rights to him at the time, and we had been told for years that he would not be in the MCU. That of course changed in the lead-up to this film, with Marvel and Sony striking a deal to share him and putting him in all their ads for the movie. Imagine if DC made a DCU with no Superman. For many, that's what the MCU sans Spiderman was. Him finally entering the MCU felt like a homecoming.

The funniest bit about that is when he first jumps up and grabs the helicopter's landing skid, pulling it down by his own weight. It implies (if you think about it) that Cap is too heavy to be carried by helicopter, which is obviously untrue.

It was shown to Cap and Natasha that Howard Stark had been killed by Hydra in CA - Winter Soldier. The computerized Dr. Zola showed them the headlines of Howard's death by car accident as evidence of Hydra clearing the deck to take over SHIELD. It wasn't explicitly shown that the Winter Soldier was the assassin until Civil War. Steve knew HYDRA had killed Stark's parents, but not explicitly that Bucky had done it.

Then why would Steve admit to Tony that he knew Bucky killed his parents when Tony asked him after watching the video? Plus, Steve did not look surprised when watching the video, he looked guilty, like he already knew. I think Steve found out Bucky killed Tony parents at the end of Winter Soldier when Natasha gave Steve the file on Bucky and told him, "You might not want to pull on that thread". It more than likely was in Bucky's file that he killed Tony's parents so Natasha and Steve knew.

@@lirpa2300 Stark asked the question twice. Steve's first answer was "I didn't know it was him." Stark asked the question again, at which point, Steve realizing that there was no correct answer for Stark to this question, simply said "Yes." He could have deduced it before, given the circumstance when he was shown that Hydra had killed the Starks, but had not admitted it to himself until that moment.

@@davidbeach4682 I think it's more or less that Steve had a feeling it was Bucky but wasn't 100% sure. Like you said, when shown that the Starks were clearly taken out by Hydra, Steve knew that Bucky at the time was their assassin. It wasn't hard to put the pieces together but he just didn't put it together. So when Tony asked the first time, Steve pauses before answering he didn't know it was him, but he is not being entirely truthful. He had a hunch and it was the most logical conclusion but I think a part of him didn't want to believe it. But now with the evidence presented his hunch was correct. So when Tony calls him out on it, as if he knew Steve had a feeling or knew more than he was admitting, Steve pauses again and accepts what he already felt was the truth. I have to admit, it's brilliant storytelling... miss this MCU so much.

The guy who made the robot could try and win the fight themselves but there’s no guarantee they’ll win. When Quicksilver died it was Ultron that killed him, not Tony. Besides even with Tony’s suit analysing Steve’s fight pattern it didn’t stop Steve from slamming it on the ground, ripping the helmet off of it and smashing a shield through the reactor did it?

Fun fact: At 18:42 when Tony says "I'm going to sit here, so move your leg." That was unscripted. Tom Holland was nervous in his first acting role and actually forgot where to sit, so RDJ reminded him, in character.

It particularly stands out for competing against Dawn of Justice which had a very similar 'grounded real-world political events pit former friends against each other' plot but failed to deliver on it. Ordinary determined mortal man Zemo succeeds where Loki and Ultron's grand armies failed.

It also almost literally competed against Dawn of Justice. At one point they were both scheduled for release on the same date. Dawn of Justice ended up moving up to March from May.

I find both versions of DoJ hard to watch. CW is dark but still compelling. I wish more of the DC movies avoided the idea that slow motion and steely-eyed granite jaw stares pass for emotional impact. They need more substance and less movie angsty pouting.

Yeah, this is an intense emotional story that has been building really since the first Iron Man movie. And Cap knew since Winter Soldier. Since Zola’s “Accidents will happen…” over the headline on the death of the Starks. And so much good new stuff too between Black Panther and Spider-Man. But the biggest tear jerk? It’ll always be that text: “She’s gone. In her sleep.” Even knowing that it was coming takes nothing away from the sting of losing Peggy. I cried in the theaters and still tear up to this day watching now. More to come. Oh, so much more…

Some notes about the differences between the Comic Civil War and the MCU. In the comic The New Warriors (Night Thrasher, Namorita, Speedball, and Microbe) battle a group of villains (Cobalt Man, Speedfreek, Coldheart, and Nitro all B and C list Villains and hero's) in Stamford, Connecticut, while filming a reality television show. Nitro explodes, killing more than 600 people (including school children and all of the New Warriors except Speedball). The rest of the superheroes appear in Stamford to search for survivors from X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, and other solo hero's, The X-Men are overseen by Sentinels. The Superhero Registration Act comes into play with many hero's agreeing to sign after what happened in Stamford while other hero's decide not to sign as that would mean registering with the federal government as a "human weapon of mass destruction," reveal their true identity to the authorities, and undergo training. Iron man is pro signing while Captain America is anti signing same as the film. The MCU instead of the The Superhero Registration Act we have the The Sokovia Accords. The Avengers Will No Longer Be A Private Organization And Are Subject To Government Oversight, No Superhero Is Allowed To Operate Outside Of Their Own Country Without UN Approval, Using Superpowers To Break The Law Or Engage In Vigilante Activity Means Indefinite Detention Without Trial, The Use Of Technology To Grant Superpowers Will Be Regulated, Section 36B: The Creation Of Self-Aware Artificial Intelligence Is Prohibited. Also another big difference is the roster with the comic having much more hero's and teams involved compared to the much smaller number we see in the MCU. It was very much a crossover comic that affected every single hero while also diving into Mutants as well. Thankfully they introduced two new hero's in this film but it very much feels like an Avengers rather than a Marvel crossover. film Wanda of course is also the cause of this whole event but of course past films are also brought up as well. The comics are like this as well linking back to past comic storylines that happened while also highlighting what happened in Stamford. The villain of this movie is Helmut Zemo who is very important to the comic's tends to be shown in a red mask with some pretty cool skin tight royal looking outfit along with a sword. His father actually a member of Hydria and was a villain to Captain America in the comics. His father also wore a mask and used a sword as well. Don't worry this was Spider-Mans introduction into the MCU same with Black Panthers so there was nothing else to watch before hand. Spider-Man Homecoming came out a year later Civil War in 2017 While Black Panther came out in 2018. I do wish that Spider-Man was introduced a littler earlier like at least one film before he appeared in the MCU. As much as love the MCU Spider-Man movies and this version of Peter/Spider-Man we never got a good chance to see him be the solo Spider-Man we see in the comic's and other Spider-Man movies instead they jumped right to the big epic stuff which is fun I've always wanted to see Spider-Man with the Avengers on the big scene just wish we had more build up. There's also three other movies after No Way Home so i hope these focus more on solo Spider-Man. Aunt May is also very different much younger than any version from the comic's but by No Way home i liked her she's the best in that movie. Andrew Garfield could've been the MCU Spider-Man as when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was being worked on Marvel came to Sony to see if they could add The Avengers tower to the Manhattan Skyline which would've meant that The Amazing Spider-Man films would've been apart of the MCU. But this never happened and when that film kind of failed Kevin came to Amy Pascal who is a producer and executive for Sony Pictures. Kevin pretty much said that this wasn't going well and recommended the idea that maybe they could introduce Spider-Man into the MCU something Kevin has been trying to do for years. Sony finally agreed and was able to show up in Civil War and later in his own MCU Spider-Man movies that are created by both Marvel Studios and Sony which is why you'll see the Sony Logo when you watch them.

Regarding Aunt May's age, that's partially because Marisa Tomei looks young. She was 52 in the first movie. That's not much younger than comic Aunt May. Aunt May's age in the comics was also peculiar. There are comics where Ben and May shown to be quite old (50, 60+) while Peter's parents are still 20-30s when Peter is born. Is that meant to imply Peter's grandparents had children nearly 20-30 years apart? Does that mean Aunt May is 70-80 by the time Peter is a young adult? She's comically old in the comics, and it was inconsistent across comics. I think the issue is overblown. The movie is more realistic here, even if May is meant to be younger than Tomei actually is.

Rumor is at that lunch meeting between Feige and Pascal, she reacted VERY badly when he broached the idea of sharing Spidey, possibly even chucking a sandwich at him.. she said so herself. But the next day she called him back, apologized, and agreed that it could be workable. Considering the oodles of money Sony has gotten from the spiderman movies, with marvel actually making them for sony.. very profitable indeed.

KEY FYI: "I didn't know it was him" - Steve. *Cap did not know who Hydra used to kill Tony's parents.* Both Cap and Black Widow found out Hydra was behind the murder of Tony's parents (Dr. Zola's reveal in CA 2). Since neither one told Tony, we can surmise they most likely talked it out and decided together not to tell Tony. We know Black Widow is an expert in psychological profiling (from IM2, Avengers, etc.). We know that until CA2, Shield kept a psychological profile on all the Avengers the best they could, including Tony. Therefore, Black Widow had to be involved with those Shield profile updates. Tony was rather unstable due to enormous mental stress. Natasha's expert opinion had to weigh in heavy with Cap's decision not to tell Tony.

I wonder if you recognize Secretary Ross was previously General Ross, who was chasing Banner in "the Incredible Hulk". Wanda did not actually push Vision though the floor. She changed his mass to make him so heavy that the floor broke underneath him. Robert Downey Jr. improvised the line about telling Peter to move his leg so he can sit down, because Tom Holland forgot the blocking of the scene. The main HYDRA Winter Soldier is played by Chris Evans' stunt double and the female one is played by Scarlett Johannsen's stunt double. The fact that they cast stunt performers in these roles, rather than actors, is a clue that they won't play as big a role in the film as we're led to believe.

I feel captain america has the better serum put into him considering the original creator made it and it's not copied. It gave him the ability to adapt to all forms of martial arts and other super soldiers where just trained to fight but they were adapted to all forms of combat

Addie, I absolutely loved this reaction. Civil War is one of my favorite MCU movies and it really highlights the path that each one of our beloved characters takes going forward. It’s such a pivotal film and if you haven’t already, you’ll start to notice patterns of how Tony acts and why. From the events of the original Avengers, to Iron Man 3 and his PTSD which causes Ultron which in turn helps trigger Civil War… it’s all so brilliantly intertwined. Can’t wait to see you react to the rest of phase 3!

Yes!!!! I’m so glad you watched this movie!!! This movie is amazing! I will never forget the moment when everyone in theaters laughed and cheered the moment Black Widow said “Downstairs. Where’s yours?” Then they showed Queens and along came the Spider-Man! Your reaction to that did not dissapoint!!! Tony Stank was one of the best Stan Lee cameo’s. I love the ending to this film with Tony Stark reading Captain America’s letter. I also like how each of the mid and Post credit scenes tied in with Captain America vs being something totally unrelated to the main character.

The entire Captain America "line" of movies in the MCU is great - pretty much the perfect ratio of drama, levity, action, and stakes to my liking. But I am a little worried if they can (or want to) keep it up, seeing how they've been much more heavily into the "superhero comedy" genre as of late, as per Guardians, Thor, Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk. I mean, I'm not against some Benny Hill in my superhero cereal, but I wouldn't want _everything_ to be Benny Hill in my superhero cereal.

Glad you enjoyed this and were surprised by Spidey showing up! We saw him in too many trailers for us to be shocked the first time around. Also, to clear something up, Steve didn’t know that Bucky killed Stark’s parents, only that Hydra had them killed. He found that out talking to Zola in Winter Soldier and didn’t get any more information about it until Tony did watching the surveillance footage.

Great reaction to this movie, it really highlights how well the MCU captured the characters. You know them more as Steve and Tony than Captain America and Iron Man. At the same time there is plenty of cool action. I have to say Tom Holland plays Spiderman very well. His age, his quirky personality, he's worried about school and homework, the chatter when he's fighting. Vastly different than Tony, who makes the perfect father figure to him.

I call this movie Avengers 2.5 because they aren't all there. Thor and Bruce are gone. But this movie had my goosebumps with goosebumps in the theater. To this day I go back and forth between this and Winter Soldier as my favorite Cap movie. I personally think Captain America's movies pushed the main story arcs further and were more interesting than Thor's and Tony's. The promo for this was so big. There were shirts, hats, posters, you name it...promoting the slogan Team Capt or Team Ironman. I was definitely Team Cap. If my best friend went through what Bucky did and they're the only link I have from my old world, I'd protect him/her like that too. I get Tony's painful rage, but again...not letting anyone kill my best friend. Bucky deserved a chance. Btw...Falcon's name is Sam. Sam Wilson. General Ross was a hypocrite for coming to the Avengers and throwing all those incidents in their faces when he was responsible for what the Abomination did to Harlem, N.Y. He also had his soldiers and pilots firing war weapon grade bullets in a civilian housing area and community. We don't know if people got shot up and killed just sleeping in their homes or whatever. Steve found out with Nat from Zola, the A.I. computer in Winter Soldier, that Shield operatives were murdered by Hydra. Howard Stark and Nick Fury's faces came up. Steve wasn't sure probably up until the video reveal, that Bucky was the assassin who did it. Probably didn't want to ask Bucky because he wasn't ready for the answer. So that's why he never mentioned it to Tony.

Zemo is in my personal top 5 "villains" in the MCU, if you can even call him that. He's compelling, mysterious, but even better, simply a man. Sure he's heavily trained and a special ops guy, but he's just a guy. Someone who is hurt. And he succeeded in the end at what he wanted, when super powered people failed.

On thinking the roles would be reversed between Tony and Cap, they would have been before. But now After Winter Soldier Steve has seen what corruption there can be in the government that would be overseeing them, particularly when there is too much power. He's seen the problems caused not just being that Hydra had infiltrated SHIELD, but with SHIELD having so much power in that.

Not really. Steve always stood his ground against a "bully" force regardless of whom that was. He also knows that the serum that enhanced him brought out the worst in someone like Red Skull so if one man can be corrupted to such a degree than many men with power is much worse. Tony really is the type to abuse power. He's literally diagnosed as a narcissist in the first Avengers movie and in the real world it's know that narcissist end up in positions of power and authority since they think only they know and do best.

If some giant organization like the UN is in charge of the Avengers, that will become such an insanely long process to get a mission approved. Meetings upon meetings, voting on it, paperwork, phone calls, etc. Meanwhile Hydra or whoever could be trashing the city! And then all that to lead up to a "no" for the Avengers to get involved because of "political reasons" 🙄

He’s perfect as both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, something the other two weren’t and on top of that he has giving us the best acting performance as the character. Can’t wait for Spider-Man 4.

The really cool thing about the footage that Thunderbolt Ross shows the Avengers is that it's mostly all destruction they caused (and you see it from the ground from the civilian's perspective). Hulk is smashing aliens in New York and you see how he is himself dropping rubble on people, including the people taking the footage. And then everything with Sokovia only even happened because Tony created Ultron. But what I love about that perspective is how realistic it is and how it sets the tone. One of my gripes with Age of Ultron was how perfect their heroism came across in the final act of that film (mostly cuz the trailer set a very different expectation), so I loved how this film committed to that more serious tone. Also gotta say I love to see how invested you're getting!! xD

Fun Fact, you can see "Young Tony" in a number of famous 80's teen movies. RDJ was associated with the "brat pack" back then, and was a well known actor in his teens. There's plenty of footage of his face for them to CGI into this. Wanda moved the explosion from the street level up to the rich-people level, otherwise it wouldn't have been much of a problem. If a bunch of poor people had died in a farmer's market from a terrorist attack, nobody would have cared that much. But some important people in a high-rise building died, so now it's an international incident, and they're blaming the Avengers (aka the people who tried to stop it) for that. You: "what if the United Nations is run by Hydra?" Me: exactly the same thought Steve had. There's an interesting line here, when Steve asks Tony about Pepper: "I thought maybe the Accords could split the difference." As in, part of why he's leaning to that side is in hoping to get Pepper back. If you're into Marvel to be a Spider-Man fan, then there are three takes, and they're all officially valid now, so check them all out.

This is the one we were waiting for..... for YOU!😀 It's intense. Everyone is forced to make hard decisions, there's a lot of action - fight scenes and chases. Cap and Bucky are the core of this movie, but the writers did a great job of giving everyone their own subplot, as well as cleverly introducing new characters without muddying everything up. In my opinion we see that Cap, Tony and Nat together are the heart of the Avengers. Yeah, the Ant Man movie had such a different vibe you almost forget it's woven into the fabric of this continuing story.

One of the best MCU movies. No need for over the top fancy cgi action (even if it has plenty of it). The real intensity comes from the personal conflicts, the moral questions, the relationships between the characters and how to overcome their problems or see what creates them. It has emotional impact cause we can identify with such things more than with punching people half a mile through the air (even if that happens here too but it is not the main focus). Same reason why the original star wars movies worked so well.

A lot of people say that they didn't want to see Spider-Man's origin but in think it really throws off his character arc. @@TheGravytrain that's always been a garbage excuse that MCUstans try and use to brush away the way it treated Spider-Man. An origin story does not take an entire trilogy including supporting role appearances in major crossover storylines. His origin story may be rather know among fans of the genre but at this point in the MCU a lot of people were jumping on the bandwagon because the movies got popular from core fanbase support. It was either Stan Lee or Steve Ditko that said but that "ever comic is someone's first comic." It could have been a few minutes of creative writing to get his story across but they tried to pass off nonsense like "when you can do a thing and a bad thing is about to happen but you don't do that thing than it's your fault" or whatever dumb thing Peter says to Tony in his room.

@@meowski617 did you watch The Northman? Did you know that that ancient northern European story was what Shakespeare copied for Hamlet? Did you know in the early 90's the Japanese used Hamlet to make an animated movie called Sambo about a lion cube's journey to become king? Did you know Disney copied Sambo to make the Lion King? I ask this because we "watch the same movie with a different person" all the time. Joseph Campbell sums this up in his books The Hero with a Thousand Faces and in The Heroes Journey. There are only a hand full of stories that human beings tell over and over ago. Everything is a retelling of something before. The thing that changes is the story teller has the creative skill and artistic ability to tell that story well enough to make the audience suspend their predisposed beliefs and be enthralled by the story. The MCU got lazy, obviously formulaic and greedy once it was bought out by Disney. Remember, Disney established itself retelling old European fables with modern animation. And they're getting lazy again, hence, all the remakes of their own older movies. As for MCU Spider-Man, aside from the conflicting viewpoints people have saying they didn't want to see an origin story while also saying that his trilogy is an origin. I'll say he wasn't being Spider-Man until his latest hour of screen time since that hour has all the beats of Spider-Man's origin. His narrative arc is out of wack because the MCU wanted him as a replacement for when RDJ was to step away but they half assed it as if they thought Spider-Man couldn't draw in an audience. No Way Home costs on nostalgia and finally presenting his origin story properly, otherwise it's pretty basic.

This film brought so much conflict in me. I can agree with both sides on some aspects, but I'm mostly on Cap's side. Tony is understandable about trying to keep things under control, but there are some things that can't be ignored no matter what. I never blamed Bucky for killing Tony's parents either because he was just a gun for Hydra. I can forgive Cap for hiding this from Tony because he felt he was protecting him. It's like...how do you tell someone something like that? Seeing Cap drop the shield was a tear jerker too. I'm looking forward to your next reactions of the MCU.

The only two issues I'd say I have with the writing in this movie are: 1. The woman who confronts Tony by the elevator asks who is going to avenge her son. Lady, they killed Ultron. He was avenged. Learn what words mean. 2. When Ross is blaming them for New York (An alien army led by Loki)and the helicarrier incident (Shield/Hydra).

When we had the previews for this, we knew Captain America and Iron Man were on opposite sides. We got these lines fed to us over and over...... Captain America: "He's my friend." Iron Man: "So was I." The most brutal lines actually were between Tony and Bucky Tony: "Do you even remember them?" Bucky: "I remember all of them." Initally we all thought that Bucky was trying to hurt him emotionally. We learned that he was just being honest. The fact is that The Winter Soldier has suffered an unbelievable amount of guilt for being a weapon. He chose to never forget because it was a type of self appointed penance for what he has done.

The Avenger's mission in Lagos was one of my favourite scenes tbh. I loved how it showcased each character's skills (especially Cap & Nat), and showed how well they had learned to work w/ each other in combat. This was a heart breaking movie. I was in a packed theater for this on the 2nd weekend, you can hear the tears and blowing of the nose. Zemo almost John Wick'd them all. The film definitely needed the amount of humor it did, otherwise this movie would've and could've been much darker. Luckily the MCU doesn't work that way :p

Geez, Steve must have really held back when he hit Peter with his shield, thank goodness. Peter is stronger than a supersoldier in terms of force, but he doesn't have their resilience (supersoldiers are more durable, harder to injure or kill, and aren't vulnerable to poisons, which was why Steve didn't bother wearing a gas mask at the beginning of the movie, while in the comics, Peter is vulnerable and is more easily injured). Steve might be weaker, but he could still end Peter with one really powerful blow, especially when delivering it with a chunk of metal.
