The RAID choice is really important: the redundancy of data is essential:you use half of your storage space as an automatic backup. Handy that you set up an automatic copy of one NAS to the other one!

Synology used to be my favorite brand, but it recently is starting to do some shady practices, of requiring people to use their branded hard drives, or they block it via software. This hard drive block tactic used to be just in the higher end models, but It starts to require in lower end models, and may eventually trickle down to all models.

@johnbuscher
@johnbuscher 2 жыл бұрын
Synology should have a 2-bay system that you can stick any hard drives into. DS220+ and DS720+ are what come up when I search for some, and that way you can have redundancy for a large storage solution if you know you won’t use more than the largest commercially available drives. For $1400 USD (not including tax or shipping depending on where you buy), you could have two 20TB HDDs in a DS720+, and it should be relatively painless. I have family that aren’t tech people use a DS220+ (pretty sure? It’s a cheaper 2-bay model), plays perfectly over the network was easy for them to set up. Mac Mini M1 sees everything just fine, and the Windows computers work just fine as well. You can always pay less for smaller hard drives as well, if you’re not running out of space that quickly.

I have 2x OWC Thunderbay8 NAS'. One in my home attached to a MacMini setup as a Server, with 128tb (16tb x 8) in RAID5, and a matching setup in a offsite 3rd party datacenter. I use the OWC Raid software. Yes, it was expensive, but I already had 48tb plus of data when I started, and I had to bit the bullet. My home MacMini is the base M1, but has 10Gbt ethernet, and lets me move internal data quickly. One other item; I created a different iCloud ID for my servers, and use Dropbox to synch the new data additions. I use Dropbox, so that I can transfer data from either server to my office MacBook Pro iCloud ID.

There are rumours that Apple will release at the Autumn event a new Macbook Air or a simply named Macbook with 15" display that will have the new M2 processor. But these are just rumours at this point. In theory, M2 processor will have the same CPU cores configuration 4P + 4E while the GPU will have 9 and 10 cores. I think the procesor will have an increase in performance between 10 to 15%, while the GPU will see a bump of 20 to 35% due to the addition of cores and process improvements.

I actually wanted this to be rack mount, but the pricing for rack mount gear is like twice as expensive haha... I hate the enterprise markups. Even the rack mount UPS was almost twice as expensive. I will definitely go rack mount as the channel/business grows bigger though. It's ok for now with just a medium-sized office and the 1-2 extra people I plan on hiring this year.

Help me out here: It looks like you're using an RJ45 cable, but the 10GbE adapter you linked is to SFP+... So it appears you're using a transceiver from SFP+ to 10GbE, but haven't linked to that. Just checking, and asking, why you didn't stick with an SFP+ Synology card and go SFP to SFP? Am I missing something? Why did you jump to RJ45 but then back to SFP? I'm building an identical setup and this was the best video I could find for a native MacBook Pro user like myself diving into Synology NAS setups! Thanks mate!

Also since the TS4 is only 2.5GbE, arent you loosing a chunk of that 10GbE speed, or what is the end result here?

I'm using SFP+ to SFP+. There is an SFP+ NIC in the Synology, a SFP+ cable attaching that to a SFP+ to thunderbolt 3 adapter, which is then plugged into my dock or MacBook via thunderbolt.

It hasn't been too bad so far. Typically it will just sit there uploading at 2-3mb/s, so around 7GB per hour. If I'm working on a current project I almost always have it on the internal SSD of my Mac, so I'm not bothered if it takes 24 hours to sync through. The internet at my home is great, the office? Absolutely horrible, thanks Telstra. I'm actually using a 5G modem there because there are no other viable options.

If you have a static IP address and you can port-forward on your home internet, then probably! Some home internet agreements may hit you with a warning about hosting your own server but I think that’s generally only if you’re trying to run a full commercial-grade server out of your home with large amounts of data being accessed at once, like a banking website or something similar.

Do note that Synology currently caps their storage limit at 16TB per drive/bay. I made the mistake of using 18TB drives to only be able to use 14.6TB per drive 🤦🏾‍♂️ . As an Apple user (MacBook Pro etc.), I recommend focusing on a NAS from QNAP, which also offers Thunderbolt connectivity. These NASes always have 10G ports as well, and in conjunction with their 10G router or 10G switch, the resulting solution works out bargainly. I used to use Synology NAS as well, but for the last few years QNAP is clearly better (better HW and not only in NAS segment, better prices, wider options) ✌
@CreatedTech

QNAP definitely has better hardware choices and prices, but Synology’s software is amazing, which is why I went with them over QNAP.

@@CreatedTech Well, for me, even the QNAP software is already somewhere else. I didn't mean the wider possibilities only in the HW field, but also in the SW field (more possibilities to set up different things). I have two QNAP NAS models with QTS 5 and one NAS with QuTS hero 5 (ZFS) and in one word, it's luxury 👌
